COlumbus Day

School is out of the day. Some banks are closed. Sales on junk is everywhere in stores thoughout the US. It is Columbus day. Still why do we (as US) celebrate Columbus Day? I mean he was just a person who landed on some island not even close to the United States. Also the guy was a greedy person who just want gold and he enslaved countless of indians. The guy was sent to prison for his actions. Still why do we have a holiday for this man here? Has this holiday that was honor for this man become just another day for kids to get a day off?

What you think? Can anybody tell why this holiday is even here?

There have been many arguments on whether to hail Christopher Columbus as a great hero of the American race, or a villain. Some places don't close on this day, and my school and town is one of them. We don't necessarily celebrate his actions. He only seems to be credited for his founding of the Americas. Personally, I view him as a villian. Just take the Native Americans for a example. He's responsible for the "opening an era of genocide, cruelty, racism, and slavery." He's even blamed for the destruction of rain forests and the depletion of the ozone layer, which I don't particually agree with there ...

I'm guessing he may be hailed as a hero by some for his expansionism of the Europeans and if it wasn't for him, the American society may not be what it is now. But of course, everyone is entitled to their opinion.
