Convince me to buy newer games...

So, I just recently picked up my brother's old game boy after seeing Pokemon blue version stuffed in it, and became addicted once again. Since I have last played the series there are a ton of new Pokemon I don't know (which obviously I'm not a huge fan of) as well as a ton of cool features. Just when I was trying to decide if I wanted to buy a new game, my brother came home with the FireRed version. I checked it out, and was very impressed. It's the same version of the game that I used to love when I was younger, with a bunch of small improvements and much improved graphics. After playing this, I was inclined to pick up a copy of the LeafGreen so we could play together and trade and whatnot.

Somehow, I ended up purchasing a DS Lite (found out the new DSi doesn't have the capability to play GBA games). I got a Mario game, which is a blast with great graphics, but I think I really need a little Pokemon back in my life (lol). I'm just curious, as a believer in the old school versions, do you guys think I would be more entertained picking up the LeafGreen or just getting the new Platinum version? Keep in mind I've never played the gold/silver or any of the other colors, and as such I don't know any of the characters or new pokemon.

Please give your opinion as well as some reasons why you like the games. I really appreciate any and all input.

    Thanks
    - Jeremy

I like this thread because I'd like to know too. xD I'm pretty much in the exact same position as you, so I don't have an answer, but I'd also like an answer!

Did you ever play GSC? Did you like it? If so, I would pick up HGSS once it becomes localized. Even if you didn't, Kanto is included in it and I would still try it out.

If you're curious about the newer installments, I would get Emerald and Platinum. However, I would learn about the current Pokemon and generation before buying since you haven't played in a while and might throw yourself in a shocker.

    Hoped I helped.^^

Well, first you should probably get Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire then Emerald and complete one of those. Then you should get either Pokemon Pearl/Diamond then Platinum after, as the storyline in Emerald is a bit different the Ruby/Sapphire and the storyline in Platinum is different to Pearl/Diamond. As for GSC, maybe you should wait till Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver comes out otherwise you would need to buy a GBA or GBASP to play the original GB GSC. lol, I've brought (and lost) and played all handheld Pokemon games since RBY. Whenever a new one came out, I always brought it at least within 2-3 days after its release. Anyway, hope you get back into Pokemon games again and a lot has changed since the original RBY.
P.S you will get to love a lot of "new" Pokemon when you start playing the "newer" games (The Pokemon are "new" to you and the games are "newer" to you lol)

LeafGreen is definitely worth it for an old school fan of Red/Blue. It is, essentially the same game, but with a ton of added content at the end that should function to ease you into the newer generation pokemon. :P

When HeartGold and SoulSilver are localized next year, they would also be good choices as they are remakes of the Gold/Silver games. :D

Definitely get Emerald and Platinum. They're the third versions of the third and fourth generations respectively, and miles better than the main two of each generation. I would also get HeartGold or SoulSilver, updates of the original Gold and Silver, and generally considered the best Pokemon games to date.

As for why you should get them? Well, you don't know the new Pokemon. That's a huge advantage, you get to travel through three brand new regions, discover 342 brand new Pokemon. You get the mystery of "what's this thing going to evolve into? Sure, the newer games aren't perfect, but they've got some major gameplay improvements and some great characters like Cyrus in Platinum. Buy them. You'll love it, I promise.

For DS-only games, Platinum is a good choice. It's got more features then both Diamond and Pearl, and includes new legends you can catch. :) Since you're a fan of the older games, you might consider getting HeartGold/SoulSilver when they come out. They're remakes of Pokemon Gold and Silver, and I'm sure an PokeFan would love them. :D

when i recently played the old versions again it made me realise how much I like the Box system that is in the newer games. In blue especially it was a pain in the neck to change Pokemon around.
Btw I prefer Saphire from the rse Generation, Emerald may have the pattle frontier, but I didnt like the idea of having the beauty contest at one place only. I liked it being arranged like the gyms. and Kyogre is one of the last cool legendaries imo :)
