Okay, so I didn't notice until it's already happened...

but apparently the left hinge on my HP dv9000 laptop got loose. I didn't notice at all, and continued along with my way... until this morning, it got stuck closed. I managed to pry it open, but later I tried to close it, and SNAP, the plastic lining the LCD screen cracks, and there's a 1 inch crack on the bottom left of the lining, as well as the outside cover disconnecting from the inside screen if I try to close it.

Apparently, there was a recall on the laptop because of motherboard failures (which I have experienced before) and this left hinge issue, but I worry that since it's cracked, I'll now have to pay for repairs.

Mom says I should just "pretend it's a desktop and leave it alone", because the LCD still works and mom's had a similar problem with her laptop of a different model for months, but the crack really worries me. Help?

It probably wouldn't hurt to get it evaluated, just to see if it qualifies for repairs under a warranty or recall notice. If they do say that you'd have to pay for it, then I would say it's up to you whether you pay to have it fixed or go with your mother's advise and treat it as a desktop and leave it open all the time. (In my opinion, you should take your mum's advise if they say you need to cover the cost of repairs and save the money for your next computer)

    I've had the motherboard problem.

Call HP and tell them what's wrong. Specifically, I'd ask them for a technician right when you get on the phone. Have a couple of recall sources as well on you. If everything goes according to plan, they'll give you free shipping for a free repair. It worked for me (b'-')b

If there was a recall, you're good to go. Back up your stuff and send it back.

I feel your pain man. I previously owned an HP Pavilion dv6215us. But instead of your LCD bezel crack, the bottom panel of the laptop (which contains the keyboard, touchpad, etc) fell apart. These machines are quite possible the worst things I have ever (tried to) work on. This all happened before the recall however, so maybe they've finally corrected the problem. I do hear there are still motherboard failures however, which are caused by the AMD Turion board with the Nvidia chipsets overheating.
