Creating a good pokemon game

    Well, I have seen alot of n00bish pokemon fangames in my life, so I decided to make a good tut about how to make your poke-fangame a little bit better. This is my first tut, so bear with me.

    First, the Hero. A hero should be a boy, or a girl. Pokemon Fangames, as well as I've seen, have not had pokemon as the main character. But it's all up to you!

    Now, the hero should have some, well, origionality to him/her. Try mixing up a few things. Like, for example, a hero can be just a little kid who's a genius, and passed pokemon school in, well, maybe about 3 years or so. Try making your hero not be on the show, but whoever you want him/her to be.

    The maps. I really hate it when the maps suck. I really try to make the maps as best as I can. If your good at the mapping part of this, skip this, would you please?

    Now, if you're a n00b at this, try going to the tut's around the net. I highly reccommend the ones here, becase they have the "pokemon quality" to it. Look around at the other tuts okay?

    Now for the story. How many times have you heard, on other games, that the story should be a little bit off-set? I agree with it fully. Games shouldn't have story's like, "Get a pokemon at professor whadawhada's lab, and defeat the elite 4, while defeating team whatswhats occasionally." Yes, i know other pokemon games have these type storys, like red/blue/yellow/gold/silver/crystal, and other real pokemon games, but, well, most uf us really don't like this type of story, do they? Try making it a bot, well, 'origional'.

    The team. The team should be kinda like in Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald, as they actually have a good plot, instead of "we're going to take over the world," as most of the teams are. For example, ijn my game, team Flame is kinda "Team Magma, who lost to may/brendan, and gave up for a few years, then came back as team flame." do not, I repeat, DO NOT do a "Team Rocket." Try having motivation to your enemies. (Unlike Rocket.)

    I hope you liked this tut. My first tut, you know! The reason why I stopped this is because i ran out of words.

    Yes, here, here! I really like your mapping tut!

    So, does anybody like my tut? Any sugestions?

    Don't forget about making creative Pokemon! No one likes seeing the same bunch of Pokemon, or crappy evos/babies...

    *Tinks Glass* Here, Here! Pokemon shouldn't be all the same. Maybe all of the pokemon, and more, that's even better!

    Hey! i'm inviting anybody to post tuts here, if anybody wants to!

    There is nothing wrong with Team Rocket, infact there a big part in my current project......you just gotta use them right

    Another thing: get a good title screen. If you have a bad one, people will start judging the game as bad.

    1 more thing: Add animations! I have played a lot of Pok?mon fangames and the ones that did not have animations were extremely bland. (No offense to the people who made those games)

    You also need to be able to jump over ledges!

    Jumping Tutorial

    Now, in case you do not know how, here is an effective way to make a jumping system.

    Step one: Make the ledges so they have no passibility. (The X)

    Step two: Make three new events. (We will be using variables. Make 2 and name them "LedgeEnable" and "LedgeDisable"{Don't use the quotation marks})
    ~Event one goes like this:
    Code:
    <>Switch: [XXXX: LedgeDisable] = Off
    <>Switch: [XXXX: LedgeEnable] = On
    -Make sure to make it a Hero Touch trigger.

    ~Event two goes like this:
    Code:
    <>Move Event:: Player
    :           :(+X,+Y)
    -X & Y are the number of spaces you move. Set it to 0,2 for forward, 2,0 for the right, and -2,0 for the left. As said above, make it a Hero Touch trigger. Also, make it activate by the variable "LedgeEnable" you made earlier. Also, the ledges have to be non-passable.

    ~Here is how event three is:
    Code:
    <>Switch: [XXXX: LedgeDisable] = On
    -And, yet agin, make the trigger as Hero Touch.

    The events go in this order (You are facing "forward" or south in the game):

    GGGG1GGGGGGGG
    LLLLL2LLLLLLLLLLL
    GGGG3GGGGGGGG

    G=Grass
    L=Ledge
    1=Event 1
    2=Event 2
    3=Event 3

    You forgot to mention not to put in clichés you see in almost every fan made game. Some of these clichés are...

    - All three regions plus a new one (only experienced game makers can make this idea succeed. It's hard to put in that many regions while still having a storyline that doesn't repeat itself and making a game that doesn't get boring. I'd say 2 regions is the maximum amount an average game maker can have without the game getting seriously boring with a capital 'B')

    - Team Magma/Aqua/Rocket is back! (this idea is just lame, Team rocket's leader has quit and they have already been defeated twice, while Team Magma/Aqua realized how serious it would be if Groudon/Kyogre would have been awakened, so I'm pretty sure they have all learned their lesson)

    - The teams mentioned above have joined forces (first of all, this idea is horribly overused and second, team Magma and Aqua are fighting for different things, but both have the same objective; ''helping humanity'', whilst Rockets only care for themselves, meaning the teams joining would be highly unlikely)

    - A new team with a lame name like team thunder or team ice is trying to awaken a new Pokémon (it's basicaly the R/S/E plot with a new, lame team. Seriously, is that the peak of your originality? Because if it is you definitely shouldn't try game making)

    - All old Pokémon obtainable, plus x amount of new ones (putting in all Pokémon in the game even if you have 3 + regions is a little bit too much. And if all Pokémon are obtainable people won't even try using the weaker Pokémon, and most teams will probaly consist of x amount of legends and OUs. Games should be challenging and the ability to get all Pokémon doesn't exactly increase the challenge -_-)

    I'll add more clichés later, I can't think of any right now. I'm rather tired, you see *yawns*

    Also, don't make it so the starter Pokemon are UBER. That's bad. Also, don't make the legendaries EXTREMELY EASY to catch...

    Thank you for all the comments.

    Remember to always have the hero at leastbe normal-dressed, unlike in R/S/E. They wear clothes unlike any other games do, and wear clothes different than other trainers. Now, In FR/LG/G/S/C/R/B/Y, they wear normal clothes. Yeah try having your hero be dressed in a toga (Just being sarcastic), or having your hero have all his/her clothes be of a different color. Believe me. It just doesn't work out.
