Good morning, this is my first time posting in these forums and I figured it would be a good place to start. I am a college student working towards a computer science degree and I figure that I need something to take up the hours of free time that comes with my major.

What I want to create will be lengthy and bring the Pokemon game to a new level however I think the final product will be loved and worth it.

For what I want to accomplish I am deciding between Flash and Game Maker. I have the experience and knowledge in both to create the game, however I feel that flash can offer more functionality later but any guidance or words of advice from anyone who has already gone down this path would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

Use RMXP and Poccil's kit, that'll help.

A friend of mien and I recently had this conversation for his game. Though, his isn't pokemon based, we discussed that Flash may be an easier system if you have the experience you need to make everything you want work the way you want it; but if your still need to the entire system then GameMaker would be the easier of the two.

I use RMXP, but that's just a personal choice. My friend recently started using Flash, while another friend of ours uses GameMaker. My friend on Flash has the most work done, and we've all been working for the same amount of time, so I hope this kind of helps?

well, usually i would pick game maker, cause its more user freindly than flash, but it all depends upon your personell prefferences, good luck.

Thanks for all the input guys, it was helpful :3.

I took a look at RMXP and it cannot support what I am looking to do. I already started my project in flash to see how difficult the entire project would be.

As soon as I finish the base code for the battle sequences it will actually be more map building than anything else since the Nintendo maps doesn't fit my grid properly.

I have a rough placement of Pallet Town and Route 1 along with a really sketchy battle sequence. It wasn't nearly as difficult or time consuming as I thought it would be, then again I skipped a lot of the more time consuming tasks.

As soon as I polish my Introduction, Pallet Town, and Route 1 I will release a demo so people can see what I am planning on making.

    Thanks.

I was going to make a very sarcastic comment, but I'll refrain. No offense, but really, nobody's going to be impressed by either of those. Flash development is yawn and Game Maker is absolutely useless for a job. If you want to actually learn something useful, I'd recommend picking up C (specifically, learn the C99 specification) and developing your game in OpenGL using GLUT. That's something that you can put on a resume and employers will be impressed. Neither of those are easy, but they're very, very powerful and will show that you have the ambition to go the extra mile. Employers love that. You could probably even make that your capstone if you have such a thing at your university.
