Cross Generation / System trading?

I have a DS and Pokemon Sapphire, is it possible to trade / battle etc with a GBA (not SP) with a wireless thing, and how does trading with the Fire Red / Leaf Green work when trading from Sapphire?

Sorry to ask such a dumb question but all this new hardware (I only just upgraded from a GameBoy) is way too technical for little ol' me.

You can only trade on a GBA system because when you play a GBA game on the DS you can't use any multi player options
