Cynthia's mysterious hairpins

Can anyone tell me what Cynthia's hairpins are supposed to represent? They've always troubled me so much. Maybe they're tumours growing out of her head...

They're supposed to resemble a Lucario's ears.

Oh that would make sense, even though they have a yellow stripe. Don't you think they look pretty ugly too? :P

Then again, I really only play the games so I think I have a valid excuse xD
