This is the rewrite of what was originally known as Origins and Secrets. Some people may still remember that story, if not, don't worry. This version is much better.
Dark Heart
Chapter 1: It Begins
I was roped into his service at a young age, trapped, my life on a contract to my master. Day after day, I longed for when I could break free and become my own boss and exact my revenge on the being who called me slave. In my youth, I knew not the name of my master. But as I matured, I learned that it started with a 'T'. He was known as a very powerful Digimon, whom none would dare oppose.
He, for whom my hatred and bitterness continues to grow; every time I think of him, it makes me shake with fury. He violated my innocence and denied me my right as the true ruler of this world. My revenge will be delivered, against he who called himself master of the Digital World.
My time for vengeance is nearing. To all those who would dare challenge me, be warned. I am on the loose and my top priority is to crush that arrogant fool who was my master.
...
In the Digital World's Hall of the Gods, the four Holy Beasts met for the first time since they'd been freed two years ago and lost the Ancient Ten a year prior. They didn't talk about it much, because of other important issues, instead turning the conversation to the Second Chosen. "You've all seen the prophecy, I take it?" Qinglongmon asked. "Two will die at the hands of the Hazard holder, the third will reach her end and those who remain will be left alone."
"No one said there was always a happy ending," Xuanwumon answered.
"If they win, they'll survive anyway," Baihumon reasoned.
The Holy Beasts felt the air move in the Hall, instantly knowing someone had entered their domain. The Hall of the Gods was a large room with blue walls and dull golden pillars. Zhuqiaomon raised his head to look down the hallway and grumbled again. "You're late, half-breed."
The figure didn't answer immediately, merely kept her head bowed. Then she stood, pulling back the brown hood. "You of all Holy Beasts know better than to criticize me, Zhuqiaomon." Her voice was amused, not mocking. She was dark-skinned with long-flowing black hair.
The Red Phoenix huffed in annoyance, embers being expelled from his beak in the process. "What brings you here, Candeena?" Qinglongmon questioned.
"I have been sent to activate the upgrade with the Minis' when they arrive, Qinglongmon. Were it not the four of you who deemed it time? He's gaining too much power and is spreading his influences."
"So, those children will be called by our power?" A hopeful inflection entered Baihumon's rumbling tone. "The journey shall start, then?"
"We can only hope," replied Candeena quietly.
Xuanwumon almost laughed. "You can do more than hope, Candeena. This may be the first time you've chosen, but it certainly will not be the last. We are confident they will save the Digital World. I believe you are quite certain of the outcome, even if no one else is."
Candeena smiled, her brown eyes alight. "You've seen through me again."
"You are easy to read, my friend. Now, shall we begin?"
"Yes, Master of the North."
...
"Noriko, it's time to get up." A soft male voice whispered.
The young girl moaned in her sleep, clearly not wanting to get up yet. "Uhhh, what time is it, Yoshino?"
Blonde Yoshino snorted lightly, it was almost laughter. "It's six thirty." As the elder's sister shot up in bed, the Kimura boy smiled widely. "Up and at 'em, Noriko. It may not be a student-free day, but why don't we meet up with Rukia, Hiroshi and Tanner and check out Odaiba before we go to school?"
"Of course!" Noriko, aged eleven and with long, pony-tailed black locks, exclaimed as quietly as she could. "I'll go get ready." The girl got out of bed, grabbed her clothes, raced down to the shower and closed the door.
The sixteen-year-old Yoshino chuckled mildly. "She's a good kid," he admitted to himself. "I just wish she would get up on time." Though he had already checked his grey Digimon Mini, he glanced at it again worriedly and sighed, still seeing the "error" sign on its screen. Why did Sorcerymon die?
Child of Huanglongmon, hear me and understand. Your Digimon did not die.
Huh? W-who's that? Who's communicating with me? Yoshino thought anxiously, looking around crazily.
Be calm, I am Baihumon, the White Tiger of the West. I am one of the four Holy Beasts who rule the Digital World. Huanglongmon suggested I inform you that your summoning is soon, for the Digital World is in danger.
Summoning? Digital World? What's going on?
... They never understand the first time.
Go easy on them, Baihumon. They are the second, of course they wouldn't understand, came a second voice, more reasonable and level-headed than the third who would come next.
Pah! Who cares if they're the second! They're expected to understand immediately. This was a brusque, offhand assertion.
A mental sigh was heard and the second inflection spoke again. Oh, do pipe down, Zhuqiaomon. You're not helping matters.
The one called Zhuqiaomon made a noise of contempt. Like you can talk, Qinglongmon. How have you helped with the problem we have?
Aye, settle down, both of you. An Irish voice intervened. You'd be scarin' him more than anythin' with that unremittin' squabblin' of yours. I'm Xuanwumon, laddie. The five of us, that's includin' Huanglongmon, have picked you and four of your friends to save our world.
There was silence from Yoshino, he didn't know what to think of these voices in his head. O-kay, he eventually answered.
Baihumon chuckled lightly. Don't worry, Yoshino. We'll explain everything when the six of you arrive here. All four of the Beasts sensed the mental shrug, before the boy exited his sister's room.
...
Yoshino asked Noriko his usual question in a process he did every morning whilst they walked to school. "How did you sleep last night, little sister?" Noriko answered that her sleep had been disturbed by a vision of a giant red bird. She wore a tailored grey jacket over her red short-sleeved shirt and her pants were denim shorts with black dress shoes.
Yoshino blinked several times, adding that he, too, had seen a huge golden dragon in his. The teen wondered what it could possibly mean. He suddenly looked up and saw one of his friends, so he called out to her after picking up a red Digimon Mini.
"Hey, Rukia!" Rukia Sagisu turned, her tightly braided long brown hair hitting her in the face lightly. She typically wore a violet shirt with grey capris and white and blue sneakers. Rukia also has tanned skin from always being outside. Yoshino was standing there, holding something.
"Yeah, Yoshi?" She joked, using the nickname his friends called him by. His blue eyes stared warmly at her. Today, as with every other school day, he wore a white shirt underneath a sleeveless dark blue vest and black trousers. That was his high-school uniform. Yoshino also has a partial scar above and below his right eye.
"You dropped this," he answered. Rukia paled and quickly snatched it. How could she have dropped her Digimon Mini?
"Thanks," she replied awkwardly, wondering if the others had received theirs yet. She started speculating whether the others had had the visions and been told of their fate. Rukia herself had been addressed by Zhuqiaomon, who called himself the Red Phoenix of the South. He gruffly informed her that she was one of five Chosen Children who would be receiving their Digivices, known as the D-Kinect, upon their arrival in the Digital World.
"Earth to Rukia?" Yoshino was waving a hand close to her face. She returned to the present and swatted it away. "Ah, so you've come back to us." It was his turn to joke now. Everyone in their classes knew that when Rukia was in deep concentration, she zoned out.
"Oi, you two, hurry up! Class starts in five minutes," a brown-haired girl called to them as she jogged past. The trio looked at each other, before bolting to their respective school buildings.
...
The Ultimate level peered down at the Adult, who blinked at him curiously. "Are you quite certain of this plan?"
"Quite," replied the dragon. "The half-breed and the others have called them."
"Of course they've been called. It will make little difference in the end. They will fall."
"You sound confident," the Adult answered.
"My plans are perfect. Of course I am." He waved him off. "Now go."
"Yes, boss," the four-eyed dragon sneered, with a hint of malice in his voice as he flew away.
The Ultimate snorted. "Ah, what a fun relationship this will be."
...
"That's great work, Tanner!" Mr. Ryan, the American teacher for Tanner's class of nine and ten-year-olds, praised the boy. "You're doing really well in this lesson."
"Th-thanks, Mr. Ryan," the brown-haired boy stammered. "B-but I've still got the rest of the day ahead of me." Tanner was a scrawny child, but a good soccer player, his skin lightly tanned. He wore a faded blue shirt and black shorts. Tanner's shoes were worn from all of the walking he does.
The man sighed; he wondered if Tanner would ever get over the deeply buried shock of losing his parents. "Alright, everyone," he raised his voice, having heard the rest of the class becoming rowdy. "Settle down and go back to your work."
"Yes, Mr. Ryan," the class chorused, faces red at being caught in the act.
...
It has begun. A familiar voice entered her mind.
"Huh?" Rukia looked around, having heard something, or for that matter, someone.
Hiroshi looked over, his yellow eyes puzzled. "What's wrong, Rukia?" Rukia glanced at him and grinned widely at the boy to hide her discomfort. Hiroshi has flat black hair and eerie yellow eyes. He appears rough around the edges, trousers torn at the cuffs and his purple shirt sleeves ripped off. His shoes are very worn. The teen reminds you of a bad boy.
It's begun… You will go.
"Ah nothing, I thought I heard something," she lied, hiding a shiver. As he turned away, she glanced out the window. "Mother..." she whispered. "I'm scared. I have to leave you. I know you won't be able to cope."
...
"Hey, Yoshino, can I get some help please? Miss Sudazu wants me to take these to Mr. Tsurumaki, but I can tell just by looking that there's too many..." A white-haired girl asked. She was the average height for a fifteen-year-old and very fit, from always running. The albino girl's skin was very pale. Zoë's top was plain turquoise and she wore denim shorts.
"Sure, Zoë, why not?" Yoshino responded. "We'll take half each." As the twenty history books were divided into two groups, carried by both teens, the boy glanced at his cousin. I wonder what role she has to play in this mission. Huanglongmon said that myself, Noriko, Rukia, Hiroshi, Tanner and Zoë would be going; but what I don't understand is why us?
The two soon arrived at Mr. Tsurumaki's room, where they placed the history books on his desk. Yoshino left a note on one of them saying that he and Zoë had delivered them upon Miss Sudazu's request. They left, going back to their classroom.
...
School was over and Rukia heard Hiroshi breathe a sigh of relief as the bell clanged. All of the students exited their classrooms and made their way to the school gate, where six in particular stopped for a talk.
"Did you guys get the same weird dream?" Yoshino was asking Rukia, Tanner, Hiroshi and Zoë. When all bar Rukia stared at him strangely, he clarified: "I was spoken to by a golden dragon and Noriko had a vision of a giant red bird."
"My dream had a long blue dragon," Hiroshi grumbled.
"A-and I was approached by a two-headed turtle," Tanner stumbled over his words.
I knew it, Rukia asserted mentally. We are the five. "As for myself, a tiger came to me." But that doesn't explain the sixth, Zoë.
"In my dream, I was approached by a robed human," Zoë responded.
"Anyway," Hiroshi drawled, not seeing where this conversation was heading. "Tanner's had a hard day today, so I'm going to take him home."
Shrugs and nods of compliance came from the others who followed, but they all got as far as the park, where the clouds were significantly darker than anywhere else. It was there that they saw a man in snow white torn clothes and his face hidden. He wore brown boots with buckles on them. The man wore a white cape and hat. In one of his gloved hands was a staff with a snowflake. Whoever he was, what he did next surprised everyone. His staff slammed into the ground and a light began overtaking him, before he was gone in the blink of an eye.
"We're all here now. It can start." The others turned to look at Tanner. "We're going. I can feel it." Noriko's eyes narrowed and she tensed defensively.
Yoshino frowned and looked around, not quite catching the hidden meaning. Rukia shivered. The weather report didn't mention this cold front. She glanced up, expecting to see snow. Her eyes widened, as her vision caught green and red light. "Why are the aurorae here?"
"Um guys, there are bright stars in the light!" Tanner cried. He seemed to be back to normal and was pointing at the sky. They all looked up.
"Should we run?" Hiroshi asked, his voice now quavering. Yoshino secretly agreed.
"No point," Zoë replied quietly. "They're coming for us. There's no way to avoid it." She smirked faintly and muttered, almost to herself: "I was right. This was fate after all." Noriko's earlier suspicion infected Yoshino now and he watched her. She knows an awful lot about this.
Abruptly, the world vanished into light. Using his other arm, Yoshino covered his eyes. The next thing he knew, he was plummeting downward, or at least what he thought was down. What's going on here? Yoshino felt fear wash over him. We haven't stopped falling. Are we going to die?
He didn't get a response.
The whiteness faded and he could see green. Inhaling, he smelled grass. We're in a meadow. He rolled over, surprised to feel his left hand clenched around something. Moving his head to see, he unclenched his fist. His Mini from before was even now solid in his hand. I shouldn't be able to hold this. Sitting up, he turned it over in his hands. It now looked like a wireless computer mouse, but it was now more digitized and was still grey.
He looked around, seeing the other five collapsed as he had been. "Everybody okay?" There were general groans of consensus. One after the other, they all sat up and looked at the device in their hands, barring Zoë.
"What are these, do you think?" Rukia muttered, her pale green eyes curious.
"Those are Digivices, specifically called D-Kinects; they upgraded from your Digimon Minis' when you arrived here. You need the D-Kinects to travel in and out of the Digital World." Yoshino turned toward the voice, not recognizing the creature as he strolled over to him.
"You mind telling me who you are?" He sounded curious, not annoyed. The creature gave him a sneer from behind his collar.
"I'm Sorcerymon, an Adult level Digimon whose attacks are Crystal Cloud, Aquarius Fill and Ice Illusion." Behind him were four other Digimon.
A bouncy creamy kitten leaped onto Noriko's head and grinned. "I'm Plotmon, glad to meet you! Let's do our best now, okay?"
A dog made her way over to her partner, only she was larger with red ears. "Labramon," she greeted friendly-like. "Hiya!"
The third one, a large owl-like creature with a ninja's outfit, gave a confident smirk. "Falcomon," he introduced, looking slightly smug. "Glad to meet you. I think I'm going to enjoy this."
The last was a small purple dragon, who shuffled over shyly. "I'm Monodramon," he said, looking away from his partner's gaze. "Nice to meet you. I... I hope I can be of help."
Their cheerful bonding time was cut short by a tan kangaroo-like creature with white stripes on its arms and legs hopping into the clearing. It was a Digimon with red boxing gloves on its paws and oversized red boots on its feet. The face was a black visor over a blue helmet-like mask with light blue ears poking out. It saw them and barked out: "Jumping Blow!" A flurry of lightning fast punches headed towards them. Everyone rolled out of the way quickly.
"What the hell is that?" snapped Hiroshi as he got to his feet, looking riled.
"Kangalmon," responded Sorcerymon, staff aimed and ready. "An Armour Level. Mammal Digimon. Its attacks are Jumping Blow and Red Earth Gallop."
"Watch out!" Hiroshi exclaimed as the Digimon approached them, leaning back on its tail.
"Shuririnken!" Falcomon flew by, stopping the attack by throwing a barrage of shuriken. Before Kangalmon could think of attacking again, Labramon was there.
"Retribark!" She barked with a loud voice in ultra-high frequencies.
"Petit Punch!" Plotmon struck the enemy with her front paws.
"Red Earth Gallop!" Tanner was frozen at the sight of the feet closing in on him, but Sorcerymon barely managed to negate the attack with his Crystal Cloud.
"You okay, Tanner?" Hiroshi asked.
He nodded, looking scared. "I feel like I'm letting you guys down," he mumbled to his foster brother.
Suddenly, Hiroshi froze. "Tanner, behind you!" The boy turned to see another Kangalmon only a foot away, prepared to fire.
"No!" Monodramon cried out. "Monodramon evolve to..." A cocoon enveloped the Child. His data began shifting around and transforming inside of it, before the shell vanished. A Digimon similar to Greymon stood in the Child's place, with straps on his arms and there were blue stripes on his legs and tail along with red markings on his helmet. "GeoGreymon!" There was no time to lose, as the newly evolved Adult stared menacingly at the foe. His helmet glowed. "Mega Burst!" The powerful blaze burned through the Digimon. Kangalmon didn't even have time to yell as he exploded into data. Behind them, they all heard the strangled cough as the other died. Falcomon landed, wiping his shurikens of digital blood. Tanner shuddered for a moment as GeoGreymon turned towards him with a mortified expression.
