Alright, I've been easing myself back into Pokemon recently. When I was a little kid I played Red/Blue and Gold/Silver. Recently I've been replaying Pokemon Gold. I stopped paying attention to Pokemon during the third and fourth generations. Now with Pokemon Heart Gold and Soul Silver being announced... Well it looks like I need a DS. So to tide me over before HG/SS comes out, which one should I get. Diamond, Pearl, or Platinum. Whats the main differences, stuff like that. Which one do you think is better, etc... Thanks.

Platinum. It's got a lot of extra content, plus there's a Darkrai event going on for it. So, I recommend Platinum.

Platinum won't be the same without playing Diamond first, but I suggest getting Platinum. Frequent events, extra Pokemon and forms, places.
There are also many, many changes and info could be found here. This content could have spoilers,so you don't have to see it.

Well it really actually depends on what type of game you like.

Diamond and Pearl are good games, the both of them. Some Pokemon appear in Diamond that don't appear in Pearl and Likewise. Here's a list:

    Diamond:

    • Seel
    • Dewgong
    • Scyther
    • Murkrow
    • Scizor
    • Larvitar
    • Pupitar
    • Tyranitar
    • Poochyena
    • Mightyena
    • Aron
    • Lairon
    • Aggron
    • Kecleon
    • Cranidos
    • Rampardos
    • Honchkrow
    • Stunky
    • Skuntank
    • Dialga
    Pearl:

    • Slowpoke
    • Slowbro
    • Pinsir
    • Misdreavus
    • Houndour
    • Houndoom
    • Stantler
    • Spheal
    • Sealeo
    • Walrein
    • Bagon
    • Shelgon
    • Salamence
    • Shieldon
    • Bastiodon
    • Mismagius
    • Glameow
    • Purugly
    • Palkia
Another thing about Diamond and Pearl is that the Gym Leaders and Elite 4 don't always use their specialty type Pokemon so it sometimes makes it harder to plan for them.

Platinum is a bit harder than Diamond/Pearl because the wild Pokemon and trainers are stronger by a couple of levels. Platinum Pokemon Move sets are also a difference, as well as gym layouts and how Sinnoh looks. The main legendary you fight in the game is also different,as it's Giratina but you can still catch both Dialga and Palkia. Wild Pokemon that didn't originally appear in Diamond and Pearl appear in Platinum, such as Ralts and Tropius. A Battle Frontier is at the Fighting Area too.

Overall, I think Platinum is better because it lets you do more than Diamond and Pearl. I would tell you to buy all three, like I did but you probably don't want to spend that much money. ^ ^ It's your choice.

i think you should get Platinum and at least either Pearl or Diamond, so you can compare the differences of the game and you can't get certain Pokemon with Platinum, like the above person posted

Dragonqueen, you say that you can only get Larvitar, Pupitar, and Tyranitar in Diamond?

yes but most of the pokemon that are in diamond and pearl are in platinum, platinum is all around a better game

Deinitely Platinum since it is a more complete game. The third versions ever since Gen II have always been the main game, the first two in the generation are simply Lite versions of the third game, so more money can be squeezed out of it. I would refer to james May's cheese analogy here, but it would take too long to explain.
