[Intro] Developing a game and saying hi

Hey all,

Been a lurker for a bit here under a different account, and at the same time been working on my own fangame via Essentials. With a possible Alpha release coming up, I figured I should actually introduce myself and start getting active on the forums.

So... yeah hi. Call me Smith, Smithers, Smithy, Smithereens, whatever you like. I played Pokemon as a kid when Red/Blue first came out and I've been enchanted ever since, though I feel like on the whole the series peaked with HeartGold/SoulSilver.

Without advertising too much, the game I'm working on is a(nother) remake of FireRed with pseudo-randomization of Pokemon and trainers, meant to improve replayability without killing the curve of the game. So each new game replaces, for example, Pidgey with a random selection from Pidgey/Starly/Pidove/Fletchling, etc. I'm making it mostly for my own entertainment, solving issues I personally have with the newer games, but figure it can't hurt to share once it's playable.

Hello, Smith, and welcome (officially) to the forums!
What is your fan game's name ?

I played the first generation too! It is great to see new members who have been into Pokémon since the beginning!
I haven't tried HeartGold yet, but I just might soon. ^^
What makes HeartGold / SoulSilver your favourite ?

Neat idea for a FireRed remake! I wish you the best of luck for its success!

Hello!

HGSS were great games!
Have you played any newer games or did you stop at HGSS?

Game is called Pokemon: Kanto Reloaded (if and when I finish it, I'm doing Hoenn Reloaded next)

Starting in Diamond and Pearl, the series began losing itself a little, in its presentation. They started leaning into the happy-go-lucky, kid-friendly adventure trope with the removal of any serious Rival characters (I just felt bad beating up on Barry and Bianca), while simultaneously having the entire universe threatened a few scenes later. I know that's always been Pokemon's schtick, but it just gave off too much "power of friendship saves the day" vibes for my liking. From that point, the mechanics got over-complicated, with easy access to EV/IV alterations, ridiculous evolution requirements, and a new kind of Mega/Dyna/Z-whatever in each generation. And the games nowadays hold your hand like you've never played an RPG before, let alone a Pokemon game.

HG/SS, as a remake, captured what was great about the Gen 1 & 2 games, while still having some the improvements of the Gen 3 & 4 era (the physical/special split, berries and held items, an expanded roster). Not to mention they have postgame content that no generation has yet matched - continuing post-E4 in Kanto, the Battle Frontier, the fight with Red. There's of course been additions to the game that have been very welcome (the removal of HMs, the Fairy type, etc.), but on the whole I wish the fluff could be cut out and those few improvements just added to the older games (and that's what fangames are for!)
