A Pre-Release tournament is the best way to get yourself playing the Pokemon card game competitively, even if you don't have any good cards or haven't been playing for a while. Best of all, you can get lots of cards that wont be out in the shops for another couple of weeks at reduced prices!
PreReleases are quite different to a normal tournament (modified or unlimited). For the entry price you recieve 6 booster packs of the commercially unreleased set to make a 40 card deck. Regardless if you do really badly, at the end you will also recieve another 2-4 packs and a special stamped Prerelease promo card. You are likely to recieve other items such as card sleeves and deck boxes.
The entry price of a PreRelease tournament is around $25 or in UK; £15. This may seem a lot, but if you consider that it's $3.79 for a booster pack in a shop and you get a promo and sleeves, you get a great bargain!
(Since the cards won't be out for ages, a really good tip would be to eBay things straight after a PreRelease and make a tidy profit) ^^
