A lot of people complain that Pokemon is not hard enough. What I'm curious about is this, is a diffuculty setting a good idea for Pokemon games?
We all know that Nintendo isn't going to put out an uber hard Pokemon game, because lets face it, Pokemon has gone to the kids. Diamond and Pearl were mostly directed at a younger audience. I'm honestly not sure about HGSS because, well I haven't plaed for myself, but I know there are still complaints about the game being too easy. So should there be a diffuculty added that you choose when you start the game? This way advanced trainers could choose a brutally challenging adventure, whilst new fans could have an easier start.
I understand that this would cause issues for Wi-Fi and battling those on lower or higher difficulties. I just want to know would difficulty settings be appreciated in the game?

I'm an old fogey and I think the challenge is about right for the casual player. The hardcore folks would probably want a higher difficulty level though. Wi-Fi battles wouldn't be a problem as those could be difficulty independent, technically they're difficulty independent now since you have another human at the other end rather than the AI doing the battling.

I think it is fine the way it is if they put in a difficulty setting you could modify the game would be unbalanced for the reason that someone could grind through the whole game on easy with everything you earned on hard just because you wanted a little bit more challenge

    That's why I said it would be unbalanced on Wi-Fi : )
There could always be a level cap though, right?

the most hardest pokemon game that Ive played so far is Diamond. It is mostly because I didnt have any knowladge of Sinnoh.

    No.

Don't make me grind. I hate grinding. Pokémon's a non-grinding game, but I won't know that. I'll think it is a grinding game and do something stupid like grind on wild Pokémon. I don't want to spend three months and wake up realising I've done th--

    Wait, that's Doctor Who.

Also, how would these difficulties work? o_O

Pokemon is an adventure game, in which you travel and catch train your Pokemon. That's why it's easy.
However, there are lots of complicated parts, such as the Distortion World in Platinum.

Even when I was 7-8,pokemon was too easy in my opinion.

Especialy RBY and GSC,too much underleved trainers.
But Battle frontiers are impossible to kids without understand EVs/IVs/Movesets

The dificult don't matter much.If you want a harder game, play hacks/fan games or do challenges runs.

I think the game is fine as it is. If a more experienced player wants a harder game then they should play through it with weaker pokemon or do a challenge run.

    @ Ninja Caterpie
Im confused.. How would a higher diffuculty make you grind? Unless you're playing on a with too high of a challenge you wouldn't be forced to grind.
Also, the higher levels would offer stronger Trainers and Gyms which I believe is the most important part. Imo, a each trainer battle should be a challenge, it shouldn't be, "Let's stack thirty weak Trainers on this route and see if the Hero can make it without healing!" There could also be things like rare items or Poke's becoming more prevalant, as a sort of reward. Or maybe a cue of the Halo franchise, as you choose higher levels, more about the plot of the game is revealed and trainers give you different things or messages when you talk to them.
    @Shadow Salamence
I neglected to mention,I only played Platinum for about an hour... But I believe one difficult section does not a challenging game make.
    @Rew_s11
I understand there ARE ways in which to have a harder game,(Shiny Gold X, FTW!!) but that's beside the point. I was curious if trainers wanted to choose their own challenge, rather than having it force fed to them.

    Well think of the controversy.

Those on the easier setting will obviously have extremely experienced players as well, there is no way of detecting who is experienced or not. So if there were a separation between the wi-fi with the difficulty settings, it wouldn't make a difference because there will be new players/experienced players on both, which means the new players will be owned regardless of which difficulty they go on.

I don't have an opinion on the non-wifi gameplay.

Wait, I'm completely lost on the whole WiFi thing. What exactly is everyone worried about? Sure, people on a tougher difficulty have to work a little harder, but at the end of the day, if they all have L100 Pokemon, is there a difference? I'm obviously missing something, so someone help me out please.

As for non-WiFi, I think it'd be a welcome feature. I've played a few increased-difficulty hacks, and they are a blast if you are experienced with the game (difficulty hacks are NOT fun if you have never played the original, though ;) ). Like, I have yet to play a 4th Gen. game (no DS), so I wouldn't want to play that on a harder difficulty yet, but I know every square inch of Kanto backwards and forwards, so it's nice to go through it and actually have a hard time against Brock.

Levels don't even matter on wi-fi, you set the levels of all Pokemon to 50.

What would the hard difficulty be anyway? 'Set' battle style? All trainers have +1 level? Gym Leaders +2? Gym Leaders have an extra Pokemon? Can't use items in battle?

I wouldn't mind a hard difficulty. But Pokemon isn't way too easy anyway. It's an RPG, that is, grind to make it easier and don't grind (or anti-grind o.O) to make it harder.

Hardest I have played so far and still playing is soul silver cuz its in japanese and I can only read English.

    But I would say...
The higher difficultly level could be less exp received Less poke centers that will heal you until you beat the game. Level requirements for gyms and gym leaders have more pokemon like 10.

Well... here's a Let's Play of a hack I enjoy, FireRed Omega. In this particular segment, you get to see Brock's team (starts at 2:15):

While this is over-the-top, this is an example of how the game COULD be harder. Mostly, it's not the levels that made it harder in this hack (Onix was only L14), but A.I.. That's probably the #1 thing I'm looking for.

Yeah, it's definitely crazy fun, I finished it a few weeks back for the first time, and I was like HOLY---... at the end of the hack, my team was L100 when I beat the second round Elite Four. And I have yet to beat the whole game in a Mono-run (although, I refuse to use items, so that might be something).

... wait a minute, no advertising! >_< Anyways, like I said before, I'm quite comfortable with the difficulty as of now because I play new games to learn the region and stuff, not to frustrate myself constantly with over-leveling my team, but increased difficulty for later runs would be an awesome feature.
