Based on a topic posted on a history-oriented forum, the idea is this:

Forums will make an interesting places for archeology in the future.

Why do I say forums? Ease of access, long-term storage, and you get more than one person on certain subjects. Sites like Facebook require you to add people, and most people are not fond of random friend requests. Chat-rooms only store recent posts, which can go back as far as a few days, the only time it goes back months is if the site is inactive. News sites and blogs can be useful as well, but it's usually just one person's opinion. Most large and popular forums have almost a decade of discussions on various topics, with little effort to access said discussions.

Even now on forums such as this one you can look back and find some interesting stuff from almost a decade back. Topics on Hurricane Katrina, 2004 and 2008 elections, North Korea's nuclear tests, etc. Some older forums you can even find stuff on 9/11, turn of the century, the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.

Media-wise, since this is a Pokemon site, there's topics on the release of new Pokemon generations, and what was revolutionary at the time. And on this forum, as with many others, there's plenty of topics on other video games, movies, books, etc. Probably plenty of posts speculating future Harry Potter books, the movies, the "new" game systems, etc.

Thinking on that subject, now fast-forward to the future, say 2030 or 2040. Browsing this forum, if it's still around, or others that have remained active during the time, and being able to look back to all of those events, those that are occurring now, and the ones that will happen, from important issues such as the 2012 elections, 2011 Earthquake, Detroit Bankruptcy, Zimmerman Case, Libya, Syria, to less-important issues such as the release of GTA 5, Pokemon X/Y, Generation 8 game consoles, the Hunger Games, the new Star Wars trilogy, Dark Knight trilogy, all of today's successful movies, books, celebrities, and being able to read this stuff with a 2030 or 2040 perspective, or maybe even a 2100 perspective.

To put this another way; imagine if you could do the same for events occurring in the 20th century. If you could read full forums posts from World War 1, the Great Depression, World War 2, the Atomic Bomb, the Hydrogen Bomb, Vietnam, etc. I think that would be far more interesting than just reading stories about it from more distant sources.

What's your opinion on the matter?
