There are instances where I don't even like them for breeding. Trying to get a certain egg move, for instance.

Stellar Tourist has a point. However, I'm not a fan of egg moves myself(I prefer TMs). For me, the only meaning of breeding is adding a baby pokemon to the pokedex, Pichu, Azuril, Magby etc. etc. So, for people like me, Ditto works just perfect. Ditto also eases the mating procedure, as it is hard to find a female of some species - for example, the Starters are most commonly male.

i think ditto is really only good for breeding because of its inconsistency in battling. you pretty much have to rely on the opponent's pokemon to have the right moves in order for you to be victorious.
