XY brought a lot to the table, and RSE will bring a lot of the same things in the form of a remake. There'll be no revolution there.

7th gen is up in the air, but there's nothing to suggest they'll add anything. I'd hardly be surprised if nothing was added, feature-wise. Or gameplay-wise.

Compare Diamond and Pearl to Black and White.

That is a HUGE leap (even from HGSS), and still on the same hardware. It gives us a good idea of what kind of thing to expect from the next generation, which really without a doubt will stay on the 3DS.

Myself I'd go as far as to say B2W2 currently are the definitive Pokémon games, but that's sort of irrelevant I guess.

I do agree that HGSS had a lot of features that I wish would have stayed, though. The art direction was wonderful, too.

Is it? I played through a good deal of BW back when it was Japan-only, but I don't remember it adding particularly much. It did play with ideas that DP should have had like Cutscenes and expressive sprites and built on ideas that were in DP, but other than the moving sprites which is what they thought people wanted (when in reality people wanted something more akin to what the 3D transition brought), I don't remember them adding particularly much.

But I'm not saying that they can't innovate with ORAS, just that they won't because it's still Gen VI. The 3DS is capable of quite a bit and, all things considered, Gen 6 so far is pretty low scale in terms of taking advantage of its capabilities. I'd imagine they could do a lot if they decided to put Gen 7 on there, too.

I agree that BW2 are GF at their best

It's gonna take a LOT to top that

I found contests boring (AND RIGGED) in Gen III

They were impossible in Gen IV

I had no idea what to do; dress-up? I can do dress up, but the dance? Nope...

I swear, if ORAS has a MANDATORY Contest thing, I am going to cry and never restart my game

Unless I like it

I'd agree with that much. BW2 is quite the game. I probably would have enjoyed it if B2W2 had been Gen IV.

But I do appreciate it for what it is. And it's pretty great. I was probably burnt out at that point, though. BW and BW2 are the only Pokemon games I haven't beaten.

Black 2, was by far one of my favorite pokemon games right up there with HG and SS because it added quite a bit to Pokemon in general, and was one of the few if only Pokemon games that actually attempted to add a challenge mode in general.

Also the Team Plasma civil war arc between Ghetsis's and N's factions raised the stakes in terms of story, plot, and characters. I mean it legitimately felt like Unova and the world was going to be destroyed if Ghetsis had his way.

Oh and the post-game, god the post game was glorious and so immersive.

Mostly going to focus on looks here, as that's what I'm more into. :P

DP were laid out and played like a (slower) GBA game. Menus and interfaces were the same; the bottom screen was barely used at all aside from battles and furiously tapping the dowsing machine. A lot of old annoyances like not being able to run inside were still there. Battles and indoor places were in 2D, and while the overworld was in 3D it was still stuck in a very flat and non-dynamic format. You could barely even notice the depth. Houses and trees were more sprites than models, and when the 3D had more of a presence, it was all unnatural straight lines.

Platinum fixed most of these problems (as well as the speed and Pokémon availability issues) of course.

Your opponents trying to win does not equal a rigged system. The tactical options given to you were given to everyone else as well. :P

On a related note, Ghetsis was really a refreshing change of pace from the usual villains that Pokemon had to offer up to that point.

In this case, Ghetsis is basically Gendou Ikari with an eyepatch, except devoid of any feelings whatsoever for N, and a thousand times more evil.

Yeah, that much is definitely true. It didn't really seem like they new how to deal with the 3D world that they'd committed to in DP. I'd even say the game was rather experimental, and we wouldn't see the fruits of that experiment until BW, where it was put into full effect (and shown off thanks to Unova's aesthetic style and architecture).

That sounds pretty Cyrus to me. N was a pretty interesting villain though, but then they basically pull a "screw morals and compelling character development, world domination!" and boom, Ghetsis is villain.

Of course, it obviously couldn't work. Making an actual moral argument about the treatment of Pokemon in a game for kids (and...well...a Pokemon game) inevitably had to end in the team being undoubtedly evil. I knew that from the moment N was introduced.

Also, finished off my Ranma 1/2 OAVs. Now I'm sadpanda :/
