Do they? Was the whole pokemon sitting there saying their names over and over made up by the Anime/Manga? I always thought that is sounded stupid.
There are etymologies evident in their names. So, if it were true that they did, in the pokemon world, it must mean that the names of pokemon were quite influential on the human languages. The alternative is ascribing it to mere coincidence, which is immensely unlikely.
So, unless human languages evolved from pokemon speech, I'd say no, they don't.
Ya you are right. Dragonite and Lapras etc keeps shouting, Legendary beast keep raoring (I think so) etc etc.Never seen that episode.. anyway, aren't there "muted" Pokémon? As in, they don't say their names, just roar and shout? If there were a few, how would we (as in, us in the Pokémon universe) think up of a name for the Pokémon?
I remember that one. :D Makes me wonder why other Pokemon are too retarded to learn speech, since they obviously have the capacity for it more often than not. o_ONo meowth learned to speak and walk like that out of love. That was a touching episode tell you the truth.
Pokemon speaking by saying their names over and over is simply a way for them to talk without the audience knowing what they are saying unless some human (or TR's Meowth) happens to repeat it aloud. Their names in Japan (and thus what they say) are different too, so it's all a bit confusing when you think about it...

Mere plot devices, I tell ye.
