Do pokemon really say their names?

Do they? Was the whole pokemon sitting there saying their names over and over made up by the Anime/Manga? I always thought that is sounded stupid.

There are etymologies evident in their names. So, if it were true that they did, in the pokemon world, it must mean that the names of pokemon were quite influential on the human languages. The alternative is ascribing it to mere coincidence, which is immensely unlikely.

So, unless human languages evolved from pokemon speech, I'd say no, they don't.

Wasn't it said (somewhere) that the universe time and all matter were made by a Pokemon? I don't really see shaping a language to be much harder then creating the things that use the languages.

Or, the most reasonable solution, when Pokemon were first discovered by whoever (in the Pokemon world, of course), that person just named each one after what the Pokemon said.

Example; Say I discover a Metapod. A never before seen Pokemon :) (pretend)
I'd hear it say "METAPOOD", and I'd obviously consider naming it Metapod.

But, being my greedy and selfish self, I'd probably name it Motsuko-Mon.. xD

Yep, absolutely correct. But what about Meowth, from Team Rocket? He speaks.. what's the deal with that? Maybe Meowth was beside the Legendaries whilst they were "creating the universe", and that's why we speak our language, because of Meowth?

There looks or the way the local folk describe them. I mean look at tigers the dont go tigraaaaaawr. No they go raawr plainly.Its the same for pokemon I think.

Ya you are right. Dragonite and Lapras etc keeps shouting, Legendary beast keep raoring (I think so) etc etc.

But i'm sure some of those Pokémon has a Japanese meaning behind their names. Also, Dragonite, for instance, the pre-evolution forms of it starts with "Dra" and, seeing as they are Dragon types, we have DRAGONair and DRAGONite. Another example is Charizard ("Char"). So the "people of the Pokémon universe" Probably made their names like that.

Their names in Japan (and thus what they say) are different too, so it's all a bit confusing when you think about it...

I remember that meowth episode too yes quite touching, but yeah I always wondered why none of the other pokemon learned to speak too...very odd....

I also remember it and it reall ytouched me in a way I hadn't felt before.
Totaly off topic but I cried in the first movie when Ash was turned to stone and the other pokemon started crying and also in Pokemon4ever When Celebi died because of the masked merauder. That is how sensitive I am when watching Pokemon movies and the shows.

I find it hard to believe that the one word a pokemon knows happens to be a pun on two words to do with that pokemon. Like Charmander. Charcoal(or Char which i think is jap for fire) and (Sala)Mander.

I think they named the Pokemon by what they say like; Celebi says "Celebiiii" when excited etc.

I guess the most logical reason would be that speech was formed of pokemon sounds... But I'd rather prefer if they just made more animal-like noises... So I hope the series-manga made that up.
