Do you ever start with a different pokemon?

RB/FRLG: I almost always get Blastoise. :D Sometimes though I get myself a Charizard instead.

GSC/HGSS: I've tried all three and Cyndaquil is the only one I can stand using up until the very end of the game, which is pretty surprising considering I'm biased towards water-type starters. Should apply on HGSS, as well.

RSE: I usually use a different starter here, but my most common is Mudkip. :D

DPP: I've tried all three and Empoleon is the only one I like using. :/

In general I guess I have preference towards water-types, but I might change if bored.

I used to be fire 100%. It seems like I always liked 2 out of 3 of the starters. I used Charmander and Bulbasaur in R/B, I used Cyndaquil in Silver and Totodile in Gold, I love both their designs very much and even though I do like Chikorita I didn't like her moveset.

In 3rd generation I used Combusken in Ruby (didn't evolve him cause I hated his evolved form) and Mudkip in Sapphire, I loved Mudkip's typing <3 Never much cared for Treecko.

In DPPt its a no brainer for me, Charles all the way (My Empoleon) I'm very much in love with him c: and my Empoleon is such a bulky guy, can take up to 2-3 super effective moves with hp to spare c:

I'm practically the same. For every game the first time I played I always chose a fire starter. When I saw Chimchar though I was pretty disappointed. So I went with Turtwig.

On LG/FR, I usually started with Charmander, because Charizard is just epic and amazing and yeah. Do I need to say more? :p But, for D/P/PL, I use Pinplup. For one thing, it's adorable to look at. Another thing, it's better off against more of the Gyms. Turtwig and Chimchar aren't exactly that cool to me either, for one thing I hate Turtwig's starts, and Chimchar is just too.. I don't know, monkey-ish I guess :p. But, ehh, that could just be me!

No, I don't. I know this is going to surprise everybody, and get everyone to think I have bad taste, but I like the newer pokemon, and I started out with Blue version. I mean, sure, Charizard, Blastoise and Venusaur are great pokemon, and ones that we all remember from the first games. (Unless you started later) But, I like the newer pokemon more. But, I do understand where you guys are coming from, I think. I always use one of the starters from said game, though... no matter how bad it is.

Nope I do not immediately think you have a bad taste;) its your opinion in that respect.

I'm not saying these are the worst pokemon, look at the qoute underneath, I'm more or less asking it.

It could be me actually, because I know the oldies better. However I was just wondering if anyone felt the same. I mean the starters now look pretty weird and sometimes bad, but the other pokemon don't really look that bad to me. Although I do think it is to bad that they completely left out most of the oldies. The problem is that I just used to like the combination of starting out with a harmless looking pet-like pokemon which later evolved into a very intimidating big pokemon. Now I more or less feel like we go from a cute teddy-bear to a pokemon unable to move (that is how empoleon looks to me).

so imo its bad in yours its not, fine =)

I agree.

When I was younger, I was all about Charmander, but now I change it up a bit.
yeah me too, Charmander, Charmander!
But now I think I wanna try different. But every game I usually start off with fire, water and lastly the grass.

ahah so i got a ds again, along with platnium. I traded my starter for a level 1 dratini from my friend...

I kind of leveled it up to quickly. It took me like an hour and a half to beat the 2nd gym, wasnt obeying me.

And now im having difficulty with the 3rd gym.

But once i beat all the gyms it will be worth it.

I used almost all the starters.

LG:Bulbasaur,Charmander,Squrtle

Silver:Cyndaquil,Todadile (Im saving chickorita for SS)

Ruby:Mudkip,Torchick

Emerald:Treeko

Daimond:Turtwig,Chimchar,Piplup

Plat:Turtwig (I restarted my game about 5 times and i always picked Turtwig in plat <3)

I didn't like many of the starters after Gen I (Turtwig and Treecko being the exceptions.)
I usually put my starter in the pc and start using one of the Pokemon caught in the beginning of the game instead. When I get Heart Gold I think I'm going to trade a Kecleon to my game and use that. I really, really dislike the starters from the Gold/Silver generation.

Hmmm can't argue that Chimchars final evolution is one great pokemon. Great stats and a solid fighter. I kinda got turned off by Gen 3's starters, I couldn't get into any of them :P

My biggest problem is that I love Grass types but I find that the entire class is so hurt >__< So many types are effective against it : ( Grass just doesn't get any love otherwise I would have only chosen Grass.
