I really hope they don't leave them out of Sun & Moon just so people occasionally go back to play X & Y.
Unlikely. If Friend Safaris weren't a thing in ORAS (which brought most of X/Y's mechanics and features), I heavily doubt they'll be a thing in S/M. They seem to be far too Kalos-specific, and to be honest? I hope we get something better, anyway. The Friend Safari honestly felt so limiting because although it encouraged you to go out and register people on your 3DS to find the Pokemon you want, chances are, they might not even have that kind of Pokemon in their safari, even if they have the type. It's incredibly tedious and annoying work to ask on the internet who has what kind of friend safari type, especially for those who are normally introverted. :<
So yeah. I have zero problems with Friend Safaris being left out. Bring back something resembling the Safari Zone, and I'll be satisfied.

Why add random people when it's much more convenient to look for the HA-exclusive Pokemon in a modified Safari Zone or something? It seems a lot easier that way.

That's the thing though, they're optional. If they were supposed to be something you could normally catch in the region you'd find them within the region. It's like if you want access to new Pokémon, befriend as many trainers as you can. That's the message they're sending (and seeming likely to go with in Sun and Moon). If they're not going to go with FS they'll most likely go with another feature that relies heavily on befriending other Pokémon trainers all over the world because that's the purpose of Pokémon on their eyes - bring people together. You're not forced to have to add everyone for the extra Pokémon (that if FS didn't exist - you wouldn't have access to them in these games anyway). However the message they're giving is that if you make friends with lots of other Pokémon trainers you will get access to cool Pokémon you can't get anywhere else. It's a surprise they hadn't implemented that in earlier games but bonuses for befriending other trainers that you can't normally get are here to stay.Of course! But character customization may/may not be one of them, so we can't say for sure that it is until it's actually 100% confirmed with actual proof.
That's not my point, though.
Of course. I'll trade if there's an option to, not when I'm forced to. There's a fine line.
Good for the people who want to shiny hunt to interact with others to do so, bad for those people who don't care about shiny hunting and forced to add some random onto their 3DS for the sake of finding a Pokemon that isn't guaranteed to be there.
The people on reddit may not, I may have. :o What if I don't like being forced to add a bunch of people and go through each and every single friend safari to find a particular Pokemon that I really want, and none of the people I add have that Pokemon?
That's why I said to have a modified version of Safari, to include a wider variety of Pokemon that would be obtainable without having to bother people to do something for you that you can do yourself.
In short, the Friend Safari, in my opinion, is inconvenient and a hassle. If it was optional in X/Y and we had a different Safari which acted similarly, I would have no problem with it. But the fact that I had to bother someone to find a particular Pokemon that they very well may not have doesn't sit well with me. But we can agree to disagree here if you'd like!
If they do return, I hope they find a way to sort of combine it with the Johto Safari Zone; I'd love to be able to hook up a bunch of different Friend Safaris together, maybe even throw in some nifty accessories and foliage and stuff, and then run around looking for bunches of different Pokémon. Because while I loved the Friend Safaris for their shiny-hunting potential, I didn't like them on a more fundamental level of "only three Pokémon per Safari" thing.
I do actually like the sound of that.. Though with the three Pokémon per Safari it does at least give you a good chance of finding the shiny you want.
I agree; maybe for the sake of keeping that convenience, when you connect the Friend Safaris they could have the obtainable Pokémon in clearly marked sections, similar to Johto's Safari. For instance, if you connect a Fairy, Poison, and Ground Safari together, the Ground Pokémon will appear in a dry, mountainy section, then a neighboring swamp will house the Poison Pokémon. And the Fairy-Types can be found in a flowery, misty section. So you'd still have the small number of Pokémon working in your favor for shiny-hunting but they're still connected together. Maybe by linking certain Friend Safari Types together you could get bonuses to the Pokémon you obtain, such as 3 or even 4 guaranteed perfect IV stats, or higher chance of having the Hidden Ability.
