Do you think that prostitution should be legalized?

    In 49 out 50 states and the District of Columbia, prostitution is illegal. In Nevada; however, heavily regulated legal prostitution exists. Street prostitution and pimping is illegal, and it is illegal in Clark County (which includes Las Vegas). It is legal to operate a brothel in in any county with a population under a certain level.

    I think that allowing legal brothels that are properly regulated could reduce the spread of STDs that illegal street hookers might spread around. Nevada requires the use of condoms for all If two adult people willingly consent to have sex in exchange for money, why should the government stop them? I agree that public solicitation and pimping should be illegal, or at least heavily regulated ("pimps" would be the people who operate the brothels).

    Prostitutes can get around the law anyway by disguising their services as "escort services".

    I don't know how I feel on the matter as a whole, but we were for some reason discussing this at work the other day, and the following things came out of it:

    - Yes, it would help reduce the spread of STIs and STDs if it were controlled by laws.
    - Legalisation actually would help personally protect the prostitutes. For example, if a girl gets assaulted by a "customer", she might not go to the police because she would have to admit her trade to them. If the trade was legal, she'd have no problem.

    I don't think it should be because it is a pretty foul thing anyway. With the STDs, I am sorry, but if you go to a prostitute and you don't use protection, then that is a pretty stupid thing in itself. Paying for sexual intercourse is one thing that I never understood; I just can't see the point in it. Yes, sex is a stimulating experience, but something that should really be caused by a chemical reaction between two people, not being one person is throwing money at the other.​

    Back on topic, it doesn't matter to me if it is legalized. I mean it's illegal right now and it's not stopping them from doing it. As Camisado stated, if it's against the law it makes it hard for the person offering the services to report they got raped. If they do report it, they would be charged with prostitution. But in my eyes, it would help them much more if it was legalized so they can call for help when they do get assaulted.

    this is the complete heart of the argument. What business is it of the government to stop this practice? If two people are consenting, and it doesn't directly affect anyone else negatively in any way, then in my opinion the government is overstepping.

    So we should totally ban people from enjoying themselves based solely on your ideas of what sex should be and because you "don't see the point in it?" Never mind that it's completely consensual and may allow people who aren't very good at controlling themselves a safe outlet for their sexual urges, we should definitely ban the practice because you think it's silly.
     
    Either it's legal and the government can make more money, or it's illegal and people do it anyways.

    So, I am for it being legalized, and pimping to be made illegal. Prostitutes would be required to use protection, and be tested regularly for STDs.

    If you seriously think it would be legal without tons of restrictions, you have no common sense.

    It is an opinion.
    My opinion is I think it is silly to pay for something that SHOULD normally take place between two people who like each other. That is just how I feel about the matter and I highly doubt I would ever even consider doing.​

    No one said it wouldn't need to be heavily regulated.

    Seriously, I think it shouldn't be banned. It would provide the government with yet another trade which they can freely tax. (Within reason)

    They can regulate it so that both the man and woman are protected. Requiring protection, birth control and even passing laws requiring that the woman be allowed the same rights as other workers have. Prices don't need regulation, honestly I think this is a trade which should logically pay well.

    In other words; "Why not?"
    Honestly I think that people who condemn prostitutes are complete fools, I feel like making such a thing legal would greatly reduce sexual crimes. This has been proven in countries which have legalized it.

    What happens between two consenting adults is their business anyway...and thus the only way a woman should be charged for "Illegal prostitution" is if she did so without a license to do so. Seriously, I think the government could make a major amount of money in those licenses, and this would cut down on minors passing themselves off as adults to get such a job.

    I'm really not sure how I feel about it. I flip back and forth on the issue. I wouldn't really be opposed to it if it came up, but to suggest it in Congress would be political suicide

    It wouldn't be an issue for the U.S. Congress. Legalizing prostitution is a state issue since anti-prostitution laws are state laws.

    The question, though, was should it be legal. Your personal opinions about the issue do not make a valid argument for legalizing or not legalizing it.

    There is absolutely no difference between the suicide it would be to suggest it in the federal government, and the suicide it would be to suggest it in the state government. You're arguing for the sake of arguing, lol.

    As for legalizing, why not? I don't see a good reason not to legalize it, even if I would never use those kinds of services, so it should be legalized.

    That depends on what state it is. In California, for example, our state legislators are have term limits, so they could bring up such controversial issues when they become lame ducks.

    I mean, it worked as an issue with Nevada politicians. What makes that state so special?
     
    My opinion on it is really straight-forward. I don't feel the government should impose on someone willingly risking their personal health for some money and a good time. I don't see the trade off, much less the logic some people have in it. I don't see why people sell their bodies, nor do I see why people go out looking for people who sell their bodies. Want some sex? Find a girlfriend / boyfriend and get it on. Want some money? Get a job.

    As illogical as the trade may seem, it's been around since ancient times...so honestly why oppose it? It's not the government's place to forbid such things between consenting adults, no matter what their reason for consenting is.
     
    It isn't really. It was a trade that was well recognized back in the dark ages, it is a legitimate industry like Adult Films are...and those people get paid to do the same thing on camera! :/
