Actually, for competitive play, even though the God's aren't tournament legal, Obelistk is the best choice. You can play scapegoat, tribute 3 of them(since Obelisk is unaffected by magic cards, you can tribute them, plus he is a special summon so it works that way too), bring out Obelisk, use his effect, and attack, and that's 8000 right there. Instant win. They can't stop it since he kills thier monsters, does 4000 direct, and attacks for 4000, unaffected by traps. Slifer is the second best, pla-wise because his attack doesn't rely on the monsters used to tribute for him, unlike Ra. Obelisk is my favorite, but Slifer is a close second. I like the Gods better because of their specific color, overwhelming power, and awesome artwork.

I know, I know. Personally, I think Slifer looks cooler and has a cooler effect. Obelisk's is just easier and faster.

Winged Dragon of Ra looks more mythical then the other 2 gods, IMO. Though Slifer can be quite easily stopped - Protector of the Sancturary + Card Destruction = Slifer's ATK is Zero. n_n And anyway Ra being effected by it's tributes can be a good thing 2:
Hypothetical situation said:
You have 3 blue-eyes, Ultimate Offering + Sorceror of Dark Magic on field. Tribute each Blue-Eyes for a Great Maju Garzett. Tribute all 3 GMGs for Winged Dragon of Ra (18000 ATK) Then tribute Sorceror of Dark Magic to boost Ra's ATK to 21200. All for a 'small' cost of 2000LP :P
Last time I checked, all the gods were able to be affected by magic cards, just those cards only last for 1 turn (since there isn't any official rules u just have 2 go by ones on TV show)

The effects on the Japanese God Cards Read: You must sacrifice 3 monsters in oreder to Special Summon this monster. This monster is not affected by magic, trap, or monster effects.

It reads the same on all three right before their individual effects.

Oh okay. I just thought 'coz on the show they use Monster Reborn but it only stays on field for one turn.

Yeah, I've learned the show almost never gets things the same as the real cards, lol.

Why would they hate you? The Phoenix is the best of all the god cards. It can incinerate all of the other ones easy.

From watching the anime I know pretty much all of it's special abilities.

who needs god cards or legendary dragons to win the game?

No, I do not know not to mess with The Winged Dragon Of Ra, whereas it is In My Opinion newbies who need the god cards to win the game. In My Opinion if you are truly a pro player then you would never need to use the god cards or the so called Dragons.

Just 'coz you don't need the gods to win a game, it's still cool to have one in ur deck and totally kick butt with it. More than 1 kinda ruins it though. I pick Ra out of the 3 gods, 'coz Ra just looks so more powerful IMO. Also there's the look on ur opponent's face when they've realised they've fallen to might of Ra. n__n A shame u can't change ur vote 'coz i want to pick gods now. -.-

Anyways back on topic this is why I now pick gods over l.dragons:
The Gods look more powerful, IMO, and there abilities do not rely as much on other cards. Also, the gods can't be affected by magic, trap and monster effects (except Orichalcos), while the Dragons can (i think) (also excluding Orichalcos). And besides the Gods were the original Ultimately Powerful Cards (in terms of appearance). n_n
