any pokemon fans out there familiar with James Turner? he's a graphic artist that works for game freak and is the first westerner to make some official pokemon designs, basically he made golett, golurk, vullaby, and the 3 ice cream pokemon.
after learning about that, I've felt kinda inspired to try out a few ideas myself, I never really got into the whole fakemon thing but I decided to perhaps give it a shot.
I'd personally would like to submit some ideas to a romhack project at some point in time, although I don't think I alone can make 150 designs since I put quite a bit of thought behind my creations. I try to make my designs interesting while at the same degree illustrate them in a way that makes them capable of fitting in with the Pokemon universe without clashing too hard if at all.
I've been a practiced artist for about 5 years and counting, I'm even capable of spriting. however since my tablet is currently down for the count, I cannot color any of these just yet.
My ideas are the following, and I will continue to add more as I come up with them.
----------------------------------------
Concept no.1
this one was one of my first ideas since I began, while the first one has a name, the other two are unnamed.
The ideas behind these came from the concept of an armadillo knight (no not that flash game series), one thing I noticed is the lack of visual armadillos in the pokemon series, the closes being sandshrew. however these three don't really inherit the rolling-in-a-ball characteristic armadillos have, moreso their plate armoring.
The entire evolution family is suppose to be based off of knighthood during the feudalistic age, the first one being a page (the pokemon itself, named pageo, it's corny but still..)
pages are suppose to be the lowest level in the path of knighthood, basically at that point you are taught about armor handling and engage in mock sword fighting with wooden training swords with a knight.
pageo basically travel in groups usually ran by their second stage pokemon, they carve stones into the small daggars that they weild, these daggars break easily so more are always made beforehand, several of them actually craft the stone blades their higher stages use,
the second stage represents an actual knight it's skilled in the use of it's stone blade and guides a pack of pageos, which it trains itself, it's armor has become tough and can block any attack with it's stone blade and shield forehands.
the last stage, is actually suppose to be based off of the MMORPG (or DnD) paladin archetype, it's armor is not only stronger, but crystals started to form on it, the crystals give off a bright glow and generate a powerful aura around it. it also gives it the ability to use many special abilities such as being able to use Psychic, and even Recover and Heal Pulse. it acts as the prime leader of a group of it's second stage Pokemon, each with their own band of pageos following them.
I feel that it may have too many details on it, and it should probably be toned down a bit.
the entire family are rock/fighting types, fighting types generally cover pokemon centered around martial arts, some that involve plain brute force. despite popular belief martial arts doesn't just mean kung fu, swordplay also counts as the term basically means arts of war.
I did however considered making the last stage Steel/fighting however decided against it as there wasn't much metal-like about it.
Concept no.2
This one was a rather interesting idea, it's a poison/psychic type family that is basically a kleptomaniac Serpent (a tsuchinoko to be exact) that takes shelter within a stoage unit that is actually hammer space thanks to the Pokemon's psychic powers.
the first stage is a tsuchinoko that is inside a pouch, it stores valuable objects in the pouch it comes across, and if it senses danger, it hides inside the bag to look like a plain bag lying around (due to this being very conspicuous, it doesn't always work well). it sprays toxic fumes at anything that opens the bag.
the second stage is a larger serpent like creature inhabiting a pot that levitates with the pokemon's physic powers. the pot cannot be destroyed as fractures are meshed back into place with the pokemon's psychic powers. when threghtened, it emits a toxic fog that is controlled with telekinesis to scare off any threats.
it's design is meant to allude to snake charming.
the last stage was actually the initial design, with the other two made to coincide with it. it's suppose to be a mimic, the typical RPG monster that takes the form of a chest that can potentially have goodies in it. the pokemon is a serpent like creature that is in an expanding chest, it has the ability to close up and look like a normal chest with it's mouth being the keyhole. any attempt at trying to pick open the chest will result in your keys or tools being devoured.
it's less of a kleptomaniac than it's preceeding stages, and actually fulfills a more noble purpose by acting a a storage system for it's owner or trainer, however it does collect anything that is considered valuable, as a result it can have unorthodox things in it's possession.
mechanic wise, this line would be a tanky status inducer, with high speed and defenses but low offenses.
I still need to work out the visual design of this one as it as well as some of my other ideas are rough drafts, overall it covers the basic idea of it. and ignore the one with the X right below it.
Concept no.3
This was an idea for a water starter I had for quite some time, it's a starter that is pure water in it's first stage, and then becomes a water electric type in it's subsequent stages. they were designs to look like scuba divers or aquanauts, all of them have glowing yellow patterns that emit electrical energy.
the entire family are modeled after tigers, being one of the few big cats that actually love being in water, I also felt it would have been a refreshing idea being that it is a water pokemon that is not based off of an aquatic or semiaquatic creature (Vaporeon being the only thing I can name off the top of my head that also fits, though since it is suppose to be mermaid-ish, that may ban it as well.)
the final stage was meant to resemble a submarine, however I am unsure just how sucessfull I was with that, the idea was to go from swimer to diver/aquanaut/submarine like creature, however the final stage could also be considered a stealth pun to tiger sharks (maybe not that stealthy, but I didn't figure it out until a few minutes after it was finished.)
being part electric was meant to allude to the fact they are based on aquanauts (who use some electric devices to survive underwater) and a submarine (being an electric device).
I'm still quite satisfied with this one though I feel it may need a few tweaks.
Concept no.4
his one was a more adventurous idea on my part, it's basically a small mustelid with a bell on a ribbon attacked to it that turns into a levitating eastern dragon-like mustelid.
This idea probably spawned from an old attempt at trying to draw an interpretation of the Chinese dragon as a large weasel like creature while still looking somewhat dragon like and not like a giant flying weasel.
basically, a normal type that becomes a normal/dragon type, the idea was it could be a semi-uncommon pokemon that would require a not so obvious method of evolution (like a stone or something), and such players may pass it up thinking it's nothing special. remember trapinch in the R/S/E days? those of us that didn't go on sites like serebii never knew it became an awesome ground/dragon type until you saw it later in the game.
the symbolism behind the bell is unknown, it's more or less there for aesthetics.
you may have noticed there is a smaller version of the final stage with a different design next to the first one, originally I felt that there were way too many small details on it, pokemon generally favor larger and more central designs over a mass of minute details, I mean look at the wings of half of the non legendary dragon types in the game, dragonite being the most detailed with a 2 joint wing (in some interpretations, 3 joints), salemence, drugion, and flygon have cardboard flaps for wings, and hydreigon has 6 strips it wants to call wings.
I personally like the second design more as the ribbons start to take the shape of pseudo wings
Concept no.5
this family is the only one so far that each one is actually named, Spherite, Orboll and Crysis, all of which are Ghost/psychic types.
Spherite is composed of raw psychic energy held inside a crystal orb, it stays in place most of the time and absorbs mental energy from anything nearby, one something get's too close it launches telekinetic blasts at it to ward it off or eliminate it. it's name being a mash of sphere and spirit
Orboll drifts around aimlessly but launches relentless psychic attacks against anything it passes, it's power cannot be detected by any means. when two meet up they engage in a fierce psychic duel until the orb of one of them fractures, the loser quickly retreats to repair the damage. orboll basically ment to sound like a mash up of Orb and Horrible, as well as Orb and Uwe Boll, which really, Uwe Boll and Horrible are synonymous anyways.
Crysis Causes tremendous collateral damage around it using it's psychic powers, it marks it's territory this way. when injured or weary, it hides within it's orb. crysis being a play on crystal and crisis, since the entire species is centered around a phantasmal entity inhabiting a crystal ball.
this one was kinda difficult to illustrate with graphite since it involves quite a bit of transparency, hopefully I did alright on the design.
the reason behind it's type match up is primarily because this Pokemon is based off of gigyas from the earthbound series, it's raw energy, needlessly destructive to the point it's almost brainless, and can use psychic powers as well as other special attacks.
Mechanic wise, this Pokemon would be a parallel to shuckle, having base 250 in both defenses, base 90 special attack, base 60 physical attack, base 60 speed, and base 40 HP instead of base 10. this seems game breaking until one realizes that ghost/psychic is a horrible type match up for defense, granting 2 quad weaknesses and immunities to 2 move types that probably wouldn't matter much anyways.
I like this one a lot personally.
Concept no.6
This one I'm fairly mixed on as to how well it came out, I mean I think it looks great but I'm not sure if it is "pokemon"-like enough, now that's a relative term as many people felt that the 5th gen was way out there in designs and would never fit in, yet now they are just another part of the massive collection of Pokemon available.
anyways this one is a Dark/Fighting type, both aren't named though.
the first stage is based off of an ogre or orc with bore like traits, it's a ruthless roughhouser that partakes in violent activity amongst each other. they are violent and challenges anything into a game of strength, it beats down anyone that tries to escape or back out.
the second stage is similar to the first one however adopts a bulkier build and is modeled after a minotaur, it wrestles it's opponent down and never backs out of any fight or challenge unless it loses, it resorts to any measure necessary to win, it is capable of holding Heavy objects or Pokemon over it's head easily.
Both are based off of orcs, ogres, bores, and minotaurs and are themed after wrestling, namely professional (read fake) wrestling, and by the way, although their size differences are unclear, the first stage is about 5 feet 6 inches tall, and the second one is about 8 feet tall.
they would more or less be bulky sweepers in terms of mechanics.
More to come...
