I'm sure this has been done before, but I wanted to add my own twist on it.
I'm still learning to hack, but figured I'd do it with this since there is already a story and map in place and I could focus on making the map on a GBA game and transferring the scripts over.
What I'm thinking is using Emerald as a base and making a complete and then updated Colosseum port. By complete, I mean that every thing found in the original Gamecube game will be in it: Same people, locations, Pokémon, items, story, plot points, and features. I wouldn't take anything away from it.
For the updated part, all Pokémon will have their Gen VI (or Gen VII depending on the progress I make before Sun/Moon come out) stats, abilities and movesets; the locations will be slightly altered to be bigger and there will be routes between locations.
To keep the feel of the original game, all Trainer Battles will be Double Battles (except one that I have in mind) and wild Pokémon will not be that varied or commonly found (as opposed to the original game's not having any at all). I think the original game has roughly 58 different Pokemon (including specially-obtained ones); I'll update that to maybe 200 at the most (plus evolutionary relatives) from the entire National Dex.
Shadow Pokémon will function similar to their original portrayal and more Pokémon will be snaggable. I'm considering making a very small percentage of whatever wild Pokémon I include Shadow Pokémon but that hasn't been decided.
There are at least three side quests I have in mind: returning Snagged Pokémon to their original trainers, a mini-League, and an original story idea that would tie into an XD: Gale of Darkness hack if I continue with the series.
I haven't decided on whether or not to include Mega Evolution.
If possible, I want to use the Follow Me routine to have Rui constantly follow the player, but with the option to switch who's leading who (possibly with different effects depending who's in the lead?). The in-battle sprites will have both side by side before the release of the Pokémon.
Before I get started, I think I'll replay the original game as a refresher and then play it again as I map to get the locations as accurate as possible. I was considering trying to make an Orre rombase first (only with the maps and overworld sprites) to get started and sharing that in Tools and Resources for future use if that's something people might want?
