I don't know about anyone else but I've always thought that the 3 episodes Gotta Catch You Later, Hoenn Alone and Get The Show On The Road shows you how it can make people i'll after depression from loosing friends then a scary experience. In this case it was Pikachu. After saying farewell to Misty, Brock and all the other Pokemon Team Rocket takes Pikachu away from Ash and he has a scary experience with the electro magnet. After feeling a bit off it just before going to sleep the next day Pikachu is i'll.

I don't think Ash showed any real depression after Misty and Brock went their separate ways in those episodes. He was sad to see them go but he seemed to snap out of it pretty quickly and he liked the idea of traveling on his own with just Pikachu like it was when he first began.

Any episode where Ash releases or sends a Pokemon off somewhere else is symbolic of the real life situation of losing a friend or a pet.
