Hey, i just recently got back into the world of Pokemon with Emerald and am completely lost on this whole EV training idea. I've read everything I can find online and tried numerous times, but I can't seem to get it to work.

Currently, I have a Impish Phanpy and I want to EV training so it has a high defense.

If anyone could help me out this, maybe a simple guide as what I have to do and just how the EV training process works, I would be eterainialy greatful.

Don't worry, its pretty complicated. Try battling Geodude, Graveler, Onix, & especially Steelix. If you battle em', you get EV points in defence. For every four points, you get a stat increase on next level up. For example, Geodude has 1 EV point in defence. Your fight 8 of em'. When you level up, you will get 2 points in defence. Get it?

Does it matter what level the Phanpy is?

No, just as long as it's untouched.. Meaning, you've never battled with it before yet, and the person you got it in a trade from (IF it was traded) didn't battle with it.

No, well of course you have to be strong enough to beat the Geodudes. Yo can only have 255 EVs in each Stat and 510 EVs per Pokemon. Most people Put 252 in one Stat, 252in another and then they have enough left to give 6 EVs (1 Point) to the last stat.

No, but he has to level up in order to gain stats & EV's. So once he's at lvl 100, thats it.

    EDIT: Jimz explained it perfectly.

How can he gain EV's if he's leveling up. The EV's can't be built up if the pokemon is leveling up after every battle (due to its low level)

The stat increase from EV points is spread throughout the levels. You wont really notice much until your Pokemon is level 100. You arent going to see a particular jump in stats right away.

But occasionally if you see those +4 and +5 maybe those +3 you know an EV point was added to that stat.

So it isn't notice able, until the pokemon is level 100?

Well through EV training you can max out 63 stat points in one stat. So those 63 points are spread out over the 100 levels.

If you plan on training in HP, you can face the Bidoof's you find in the first route in the game, and the Macho Brace doubles the amount of EVs you gain per pokemon.

And when I did this, my Noctowls Hp had a +9 in it once. You sorta can notice it before level 100 just not that much cuz your stats are probably still sorta low.

Well you could get a +63 if you began EV training at level 99 on a level up. Though I would recommend that. Woopers and Quagsires also give a HP EVs. They can be found West of Pastoria City.

I devide the EV training between 3 stats correct?

You can do whatever, but most people do as I said, 252 in one Stat, 252 in another and then 6 in the last. The first two 252s are either the Most needed Stat or the stat that will be most benificial, and the last 6 is a bonus in another Stat. But you could split it any way really. Like 170EVs in 3 Stats (170 x 3=510)
