Since there is an increasing number of topics regarding the "Effort Value."(EV for short) I will make this topic.

    FAQ

    What are Effort Values?
Effort Values are the hidden values Pokemon will "drop" after you've defeated them, and any Pokemon that gets Experience Points in battle will receive these Points.

    What good are Effort Values?
Effort Values allow you to add points to your stats, there are 510 maximum that you can spread to every stat... 255 EV's are the maximum in one stat. Every 4 Ev's equals 1 stat point to your Pokemon. So you're probably thinking, if I get a bunch of Effort Values my Pokemon's stat will go up pretty high... Yes, but not all at once, all the EV's are distributed during level ups, your Pokemon will gain all the EV's once it reaches level 100. So the best maximum amount to put in is 252 since that's the highest number divisible by 4.

What are some good tips for EV's?
When you're looking at your Pokemon you will notice they have a Nature, Natures will usually increase a stat by 10% and lower another stat by 10%. I will show you which natures do what later in this guide.

Why should I care about Effort Values?
These will make or break your Pokemon, if you can give all your Pokemon the proper Effort Values, they will gain a maximum of 63 points in a stat over their level ups. that doesn't sound like a lot, but it really is.

Which Effort Values can be given to which stats?
Any stat besides Power Points, Evasiveness, and Accuracy can be EV trained (since those aren't stats on an actual Pokemon's stat list.)

    What are Individual Values?
An Individual Value is a value that is usually randomly generated when the Pokemon is "spawned." it is a value ranging from 0-31, that is a 0-31 stat increase on every stat. Obviously a good nature and a 31 IV will have the maximum stat value in that stat.

Should I really care about IV's?
Well... it all depends on what you want to do with your Pokemon, some Pokemon need a 31 IV in speed to make sure they can out speed the competition. I'd normally just say figure out your Pokemon's IV's and figure out where you should put more or less EV's in a stat.

Will I ever have a Pokemon with all 31's in IVs?
I could say... it's not likely unless you hacked the Pokemon. Getting a Pokemon with perfect IV's is next to impossible.

I keep noticing my Pokemon as some sort of description for how it acts... what does that mean?
Well, I just looked at this new document on Serebii and they have a lot of information on this, it will tell you your Pokemon's highest IV, https://serebii.net/games/characteristics.shtml but you'll still have to calculate them for better accuracy, but that will help you try and get the right IV for whatever IV you're trying to get in a stat.

I've heard Breeding can make my Pokemon that are born stronger... is this true?
Yes, it can be true... usually the parents will have an influence on the offspring's IV's. 3 of the parents IV's get passed down to the baby and the others are randomly generated. I think it's the Male that gives the IV's. (Can anyone help me confirm this? I can't remember off the top of my head...)

When/Where can I figure out my Pokemon's Effort Values?
Well, you can do it as soon as you have Wi-fi or a friend who has a copy of Diamond/Pearl. Do a level 100 Battle and make sure your Pokemon are untouched (meaning no EV's have been given to them, of course if you know what EV's have been given you can still calculate the IV's.)Then you can go to an IV calculator, which you must put in all of your Pokemon's stats when they were at level 100, then you can see what it's IV's are.
    Natures
I'd rather not type out every single solitary nature and what it does, but Serebii has a good list of them.
    https://serebii.net/games/natures.shtml
As mentioned earlier, a Nature will increase one stat by 10% and lower another by 10%. The best way to know which nature goes where depends on the Pokemon's stats... Check Serebii's Pokedex, I can't think of any better way to go about doing this...

Are there any easier ways to get a good natured Pokemon?
Breeding with everstone:A female Pokemon or Ditto can pass on their nature to the offspring 50% more likely with an everstone being held while at the Daycare, in order to do this with Ditto the other Pokemon must be a Male version of the Pokemon. Now all I can suggest is Hatch, check, and repeat when needed.

In the wild:Catch a bunch of Ralts with Synchronize as their ability(or another Pokemon with this ability... such as Abra.), this increases the chance of fighting a Pokemon with the same nature as your Ralts, I find Ralts the easiest to use since it will either have Trace or Synchronize and if it has Trace you'll know it before you catch it. Same method as Breeding, Catch, Check, Repeat.

How to go about "Effort Value Training."
for good places to EV train, check this topic out. https://www.pkmncommunity.com/showthread.php?t=88965

Now, you could go around battling Pokemon to get 1, 2, or 3 EV's after each battle, if you used EXP. Share your Pokemon could gain them and you could train more than 1 Pokemon at a time. This

This seems like it'd take forever... any short cuts to make the time go by faster? Dunno where that random question came from... but yes there are many shortcuts... You know those items? HP UP, Protein, Iron, Zinc, Calcium, and Carbos. These items will give 10 Effort Values each, now you're probably thinking "Sweet I can get up to 250 without even training." well, that'd be nice for some I'm sure, but no the maximum you can give of any vitamin is 10, which means 100 Effort Values can be given with these, that's only 152 till you've reached the maximum 252.

    Macho Brace
This hold item will double Effort Values obtained from Pokemon, so that makes the 1, 2, and 3 you originally gained to 2, 4, and 6.

    Pokérus
This really rare virus, rarer than a Shiny will also double your EV's gained in battle. It's REALLY hard to get this Virus, and it's not a bad thing despite what it sounds like being a Virus. So that will also make the Effort Values 2, 4, and 6. This virus can also be used if the holder of EXP. Share has Pokerus.

There are 2 ways that you will find out if your Pokemon has Pokerus, the most simple way is going up to the nurse when she will notify you "your Pokemon might be infected with Pokerus."

If your Pokemon is infected with Pokerus, it will have a PKRS as a "status condition" when it is in this form it is contagious and your entire party will catch it eventually, be sure to keep at least one Pokerus infected Pokemon with the PKRS condition in the PC so you will have it to transfer it to other Pokemon you'd like to use. When a Pokemon can no longer pass on pokerus it will have a :| face on the status screen. When you get the :| face on your Pokemons status it will still have Pokerus, but it is no longer able to pass it on, so it will get all the benefits from it still, it just can't pass it to other Pokemon anymore.
POKÉRUS DOES NOT, REPEAT, DOES NOT EFFECT HOLD ITEMS OF ANY KIND.

    Pokérus and Macho Brace
You can use these together, now 1 EV from a Pokemon is suddenly 4. 2 is suddenly 8, and 3 is suddenly 12. THESE ITEMS WILL ONLY DOUBLE EFFORT VALUES RECEIVED FROM WILD POKEMON, NO OTHER ITEMS WILL BE EFFECTED BY THESE.

    EXP. Share
When using this item both the Pokemon you sent out and the Pokemon holding the EXP. Share (can be more than one.) will gain the same EV points as the Pokemon you defeated gives out, now if your Pokemon that are holding the EXP. Share are getting experience while the Pokemon you're battling with has an item like Macho Brace, the Macho Brace will only effect the Pokemon that is holding it while battling, so you will not get any more bonus from the Pokemon battling besides the Experience being divided and the EV's being distributed as the same amount to each Pokemon.

Other Items that give Effort Values
These items are the "Power items." All cost 16 Battle Points in the battle area.
    • Power Anklet (+Speed EVs)
    • Power Band (+Special Defense)
    • Power Belt (+Defense)
    • Power Bracer (+Attack)
    • Power Lens (+Special Attack)
    • Power Weight (+HP)

These items Gives +4 Effort Values in a stat each battle, in exchange they will lower your Pokemon's speed in battle, not lower their Speed EV's. Incase you didn't read the above, Pokerus will not make this give you +8 in a stat, it will be whatever value from a wild Pokemon +4 which makes the maximum EV's you can get from this item and Pokerus +10 and that's only if you defeat a Pokemon that gives 3 EV's in the same stat your item increases.

What do I do if I give my Pokemon an EV it didn't need?
There are berries that lower your Pokemon's Effort Values.
Each Berry will reduce your EV's by 10. This is good if you caught a Pokemon with the nature you want and used it in the game.
This is a list of the berries:
    • Pomeg, Lowers HP
    • Kelpsy, Lowers Attack
    • Qualot, lowers Defense
    • Hondew Berry, lowers Special Attack
    • Grepa, Lowers Special Defense
    • Tamato, lowers speed.
    Pokéradar

Utilizing the Pokéradar to EV train
One of the things I'm sure many people love about this game is the Pokéradar
The Pokéradar helps you by making it so you can chain(battle many of the same Pokemon in a row)what you'd like to EV train off of. (As a note, The Pokérader can find shinies if you have chained enough or are just lucky, so I'd suggest you keep a few balls handy in your bag.) To chain you must have some type of Repel, I recommend Super Repel since it's less expensive than Max Repel and it offers a decent step coverage, why would you pay 200 more for a whopping 50 extra steps?

Anyways, to chain you probably want to set the Pokéradar to your Y button, now you go into a patch, I usually throw on a Super Repel then press Y and head for a patch, if you don't have the Pokemon come up that you desired, run and walk for 50 more steps (or run). Rinse, Lather, Repeat, until you find the Pokemon you desire to chain, now here is where the "hard" part comes, faint the Pokemon and watch for the grass to shake, go for a patch that shaked like the one you entered at the start, make sure another patch like that is atleast 3 bushes away from where your character is standing, 4321(you)123 you would walk over to the 4 in that small example, other than that as long as it's at least 3 bushes to the next bush which is shaking you should be fine in finding the next Pokemon, but a few Pokemon like to hide in those areas to break your chain. I hope that helps, if not look at some videos on Youtube, or check out this guide: https://www.pkmncommunity.com/showpost.php?p=2511302&postcount=31
(a better diagram, an in game picture coming soon.)

Good Note (incase you forgot.):Using the Counter Application is a good way to keep track of how many EV's your Pokemon has gained.

That's all I can think of to help out. If I missed anything I will add it later, and if anyone has anything they think I should add, post your response and I'll get to it... man this took a long time to type.

    Sort of a Bump update.
I added other information (Pokerus and EXP. Share.), I'll keep doing so if I think of anything.

This is a really good guide. PC really needed this; I'm tired off all those EV/IV questions. IMO, this should be a sticky.

Thanks for the support to my guide Stardust-Kumo. =D

Anyways I updated my guide and included some information on Individual Values, I didn't really give any links to IV calculators but many sites have them so any should really do. (if I made any errors could someone kindly tell me about them?)

Thanks for the guide. I'm just getting started in all of this and it's very informative.

thanks for making this guide. this cleared up alot for me.

I will PM an admin to make this a sticky. Thank you very much for making this. I will help out a lot of people.

EDIT: When you put Where/When can I Find Effort Value, I think you meant Indivisual Value.

That is the decision of the moderator of this forum. Like every other forum. Only the moderator can decide if it deserves a sticky or not.

    Grand guide by the way.

Oh. Well, too late. I wish you told me that earlier.

ya I've read most of that on serebii and I though I understood them, but I gave my newly caught level 18 Tyrogue two Irons(or whatever the defense rasing vitamin is) to make sure I got Hitmonchan. When I leveled it up, I was thinking 20 ev's that should mean +5 in the defense collum. it only went up +1. So whats up, is it extremely gradual or something?

I'm bumping this for aragon to view. Excuse the Spammish nature.

It's ok, I would've updated if I could remember what I was going to add XD...

Sorry for double posting, but I updated the guide.

I added information on Getting Pokemon with the right nature.

Wow this thread falls fast. Bringing it back up.

thank you it helped me understanding a few things i was wondering about good guide and you should add that chaining helps when you are ev training just chain the poke and you don't have to worry about geting another kind that gives you other ev's

This will probably just get added to the Compiled Guides Sticky Thread. This is a really great thread. i dont know how many times ive tried to help sombody and they didn't know what EV's were.

This was very helpful to me! Thank you for taking the time to write it! :D

I added something to help people with IV's, Serebii wrote up a page on it and I think it'll be helpful if you're trying to get a high IV in a stat. If you can't find the change in the guide then just go to this page: https://serebii.net/games/characteristics.shtml
