EV training help - what am I doing wrong?

I'm am currently having a bit of trouble EV training and understanding it. I am currently trying to EV train my charizard (that is already at level 52) and has a bashful nature. It has pokerus and the power lens for hold item and I have just been fighting hundreds of gastly to EV it's Special attack however I don't seem to get spectacular increase like some people do with EV training (For example I have seen youtube videos showing a guy EV training his zapdos against gastly and get a +14 increase in sp attk and another one showing a guy attack EVing his garchomp getting a +9 increase in attack).

I am begining to think that either a) The zard in question was EVed during it's time in fire red? b) it is gainng more stat increaes relevant to it's nature (bashful nature in this case). I am thinking now I should use the macho brace to double EV gain however I am trying to train it to be a special sweeper (for speed and spl attack). Is there something I am doing wrong here? I was also considering starting Fire red again just now to get a good natured charmander to train in diamond.

Also while I'm making this thread I masewell discuss the moveset of my Charizard. Currently it has Flamethrower, Sunny day, Aerial Ace and Overheat (before overheat it was brick break) and holding a charcol. This worked ok in the conenction tour 07 event for me as it managed to knock out a salemence (did a big amount of damage with flamethrower and then the for got burnt and then it fainted). Would you see anything wrong with this moveset in the long run other then overheat decreasing my special constantly when used? It's mainly there for stab against types I am weak against. If my calculations are correct I would get around about a 4.5-6x multi with all power ups considered and perhaps a small bonus for charizard's ability?.

It will only get 9+ one tiem when you level it up(or 2, depends on hw many EVs it had beforre leveling). You should be getting 10 Sp.Atk EVs per Ghastly if you're using both, however, the EVs won't go higer if it can't get any more EVs.
You can have a Max of 255 EVs in one stat and 510 in total, meaning that you can only have 2 stats with max EVs.
a)I bet that Charizard's ir alredy EV trained since it is from your FR, so you should either use some corrective berries(25 on each stat or 'til it says it won't go lower) or breeding a new one.
b)The nature doesn't affect the EV training, only the final stats(plus Bashful's a neutral nature).
c)You're not doing anything wrong but trying to EV train an alredy EV trained Charizard:knockedou.
D)As for the moveset, here are the standar Charizards:
    Physical
    Adamant/Jolly nature.
    252 Atk, 252 Spd, 4 Hp
    -Belly Drum/Sword Dance/Dragon Dance
    -Aerial Ace/Dragon Claw/Rock Slide
    -Flare Blitz
    -Fire Blast(for physycal walls)/Dragon Claw/Crunch

    Special
    Modest/Timid nature.
    252 Sp.Atk, 252 Spd, 4 Hp
    -Dragon Pulse
    -Flamethrower/Fire Blast/Heat wave
    -Fly/Roost/Sunny Day
    -Solarbeam/Heat Wave/Flare Blitz

Also, this should be on the strategy section...I think...

You would have Fly on a competition Charizard?

I don't think so. Altough Fly base power has increased in the 4th generation, you can get KO by Thunder since it won't miss.

    I think it's 255 per stat and 510 overall.

I think the main problem you're having is that it gained some EVs while on your other game. You can use the EV reducing berries and wipe it then start training it again. The counter application on the PokeTech is very helpful for counting EVs when battling.

255 on only two stats is wasting one good Effort Point though so it's 252 in two stats and 4 in one.
