EV Training Questions

Ok guys, before you ask I have read as many EV Training guides as my mind could take already, so no flaming me for asking noob questions please. I want to train my Pokemon using this EV training I've been reading about, but even after all the guides I have read I'm still struggling to grasp the concept of it (I have only played the early versions of Pokemon and only bought a DS with Diamond yesterday, I'm not stupid but it does take me a while to grasp the concept of things first time round).

Ok first question, do you need to start EV training on a pokemon as soon as you've caught/bred it? Or can you choose when to start EV training? Do you have to start EV training as soon as you've started the game?

2. Is EV training necessary to complete the game or is it primarily used just for wi-fi battles and tournaments + personal satisfaction?

3. Does EV training finish when you reach level 100 with a Pokemon? How do you know when a Pokemon is finished EV training?

If I think of other things to ask I will post them here. Help will be much appreciated. I am sorry guys I know most of you hate EV threads, but if I want to get the best out of my Pokemon I need to ask the experts here :).

No, you don't

Yes, you can choose

No, you don't need to. I prefer beating the game before getting to competitive stuff.

No, and it's mainly used for competitive battling. It's a very good tactic.

Yes, it does.

How do you know when a Pokemon is finished EV training?

Err, your supposed to keep track of your pokemon's EV's.
