I was wondering if you could get EVs from wild pokemon in Crystal? because I'm training my butterfree and I want max stats.

In a way yes. You get stats EXP. However, there is no cap on stat EXP in Crystal, and every Pokemon gives the exact same amount of stat EXP. So the only thing hindering you from max stats is personal IVs.

But Crystal has no way to tell you that you got all the stat EXP in the world while RS has the Effort Ribbon, so that can be quite annoying.

Are you certain? I recall Nintendo saying something about that in an earlier issue of Nintendo Power. The way they worded it, it seemed similar to RSE/FL EVs: different Pok?mon improve different stats. They gave Chansey as an example of a monster that would increase HP points when you defeated it.

I'm not entirely sure about which Pok?mon give how much stat points in GSC, but you definitely can max out those points (as frostweaver said).

I will quote what I posted in the EV guide for Pe2k instead of typing something up...

    GSC/RBY

    Differences
GSC and RBY operated differently from RS and beyond. In GSC (and RBY, I'll just call it GSC for simplicity), your pokemon's final stats is ONLY determined by its IVs/DVs/Pokegenes. You may train as much as you want to obtain maximum EVs/Stat EXP (the name used in GSC) to max out EACH of the stats.

    Note:
    - GSCRBY had DVs ranging from 0-15, not 0-31. Each gene therefore controls 2 stat points, thus making a 0 DV mon be 30 points lower than a 15 DV mon in the end.
    - Max Stat EXP was out of 65536 (ish), instead of the 510 EVs. Roughly 1040 stat EX is required to increase stats by 1 point.
    - When battling a pokemon, the stat EXP received is EQUAL to that pokemon's Base stats in each category. Yes, battling a pokemon will get you stat EXP in EVERY category. Eg: Defeating a Mew will give you 100 stat EXP in each stat.

    wait...i'm confused...what are ev's and iv's and all that?

IV's are what are known as Individual Values. They basically determine how good a particular pok?mons stats will be. For instance, if you catch two pidgey, same level, and one has two points higher in all stats you would say it has higher IV's.

EV's are Effort Values, and they are gained every time you defeat another pok?mon, much like experience points. For every four EV's you get in a particular stat the stat is raised one point the next time you level up. In R/S this was given a limit and when you reached that limit a woman gave your pok?mon an effort ribbon, but in G/S/C there was nothing stopping you maxing out your stats, even after Lv100 had been reached.

    Hope that helped!
