I was wondering about the potential legal issues of using fakemon found online through social media search like Google. I have fangames I would love to make share ready.
Of course artists and web pages would be cited in credits. what other steps could/should be taken?

Ask the artist directly, through whatever method you can. Artists might not want the sprites to be used in a fangame or are already creating a fangame with the sprites.
If they give you permission, then go wild, but only for the sprites they gave permission for.
