Wait, this is Japan. Why would they use $? Wouldn't it make more sense to use ¥?

I learned about the Clefairy thing last summer. :x
 
I highly doubt it's meant to represent an actual dollar sign, just a happy coincidence. It's probably not even meant to be an 'S', just a simple 'puzzle' to get you started with gyms. Like the poster above said, it's Japan, they don't use dollars there. To be honest though, I never actually made the connection until I saw this thread.

As for the clefairy: *mind is blown* That is freakin' awesome! XD
 
Yeah, I don't think it was intentional either, just a funny coincidence. You can't really deny the resemblance though. :p

I find this to be a more interesting observation.

Though I suppose it's still less dangerous than freaking lava or falling through ice into some dungeon below the gym.

Well, maybe not that second one.
