What is your opinion on video games based on universes that are known in TV, Web, Pop Culture, etc etc? Do you think this is just a quick buck for developers to create since they already have a fanbase to work around? What do you think of the success rate of these types of games? What are your favorite games that fall under this category? If you want to see a non-video game fandom that doesn't have a video game come to life, what fandom is it, and why?

Um... what actually belongs to this category?
Do you mean games like Tellate's Walking Dead or The Game of Thrones?

Because... how do we define a series that has nothing to do with video games?
In its true meaning, e.g. every anime -> game game would fall into this category.

Not sure how to think of this since it never really interested me, I heard a lot of the games based on movies were awful and that the Telltale games were quite good, but I never really liked the concept that Telltale has with them. The success... well I only saw Telltale succeed.

    As I don't play/like those type of games I don't have a favorite :x

I know of a Doctor Who adventure(?) game - Sgt.Dustmop was trying to give it away and it featured awful models of Matt Smith's Doctor or something, I don't know. I don't watch Doctor Who. :P

I played Telltale's The Walking Dead, though I can't compare it to the show because I've never actually seen AMC's TWD. I watched two episodes and gave up because it was moving too slowly for me (I know it's not the fault of the show, I just have a very short attention span). The game's story moves at a pace that's right for me though, and I really liked the story.

And don't forget South Park: The Stick of Truth! This game was awesome, arguably the best TV-show-to-game adaptation I've played. It's just as offensive and funny as the show, and it's an RPG, which I love.

Sometimes they can be really good, othertimes not so much. It really depends. Sometime devs are just trying to make a quick buck, but sometimes the games can actually be very impressive. The Telltale TWD game, for example, was actually excellent.

But I feel that too often Developers are just trying to make money. (Though that's my opinion.)

what are you doing, name-dropping me. I'm still trying to get rid of that. I don't watch Dr. Who so I don't know much about it, either, but the reviews are actually surprisingly positive.

I see everyone else here thought of Telltale immediately as well. The Walking Dead was my first thought. I still prefer the show's universe and characters to the game's, but I've enjoyed both.
The Lego games convey popular movies quite well, too. I love Lego games. The Hobbit and LOTR are so much cuter and sillier as Legos. :3
Though I think those are the only two game series based on TV/movie/book series where I have both played and watched/read the original. And even if they were just quick cash-grabs to someone else, I enjoyed them.

But they aren't always such great hits.. and they don't always make a 'quick buck', even on an established fanbase. ET, anyone? :pink_tongue:

Don't you dare mention that game in this forum again.

It's so horrible that after you've played it you have nightmares for the rest of your life... Every day... Just never ever make the same mistake I did by playing it.

Okay joking aside the ET game honestly isn't as bad as the internet makes it out to be.
