  • Luigi Galvani

An Italian physician, physicist, biologist & philosopher, who discovered animal electricity (also know as Galvanism). In 1780, he discovered that the muscles of dead frogs' legs twitched when struck by an electrical spark, one of the first forays into the study of bioelectricity.

  • William Hopkins

An English mathematician & geologist. He made important contributions in asserting a solid, rather than fluid, interior for the Earth & explaining many geological phenomena in terms of his model. However, though his conclusions proved to be correct, his mathematical & physical reasoning were subsequently seen as unsound.

  • Heinrich Hertz

A German physicist who first conclusively proved the existence of electromagnetic waves theorized by James Clerk Maxwell's electromagnetic theory of light. He proved the theory by engineering instruments to transmit & receive radio pulses using experimental procedures that ruled out all other known wireless phenomena. The unit of frequency (cycle per second) was named the "hertz" in his honor.
