Well, first off, he ran away from parents who most likely didn't care about him beyond the fact that they wanted to mold him into being a perfect gentleman (i.e. he was their doll), and second, his current life is a form of escapism, really. He had such a terrible past that doing something like working for Team Rocket might be, on a level, fun. After all, it would explain why he decided to stick with Jessie and Meowth at the end of "Holy Matrimony." And, well, why his parents didn't bother going after him.

I dont understand why he didnt keep Growlie in that episode.it might have made things easiar for team rocket.

Probably, but he also wanted Growlie to watch over his parents like a guard dog. (I'll have to agree and say I thought it was odd too because Growlie and James were so close.)

I always looked forward to episodes with Gary, but I think he's become too soft now, so I think Paul has sorta taken his place. I love the deservingly arrogant jerks. They strut their stuff, and kick butt while doing it. Then they laugh at Ash's antics.

Every hero needs a good antihero, and Gary/Paul got the job DONE.

But he's a character too, he has a personality and everything. You don't have to be a human to be a character...one of my favourite character's is Meowth

Well, no matter how nice he is, he's still a criminal because he wants to steal stuff. And he only really developed his friendly personality in Johto, I think. I was watching Indigo League and James was yelling at his Koffing for being too weak and pathetic (I know he does this to Magikarp too, but who can blame him?) and I was thinking about how weird it was for James to be mean to his Pokemon.
 
I wonder if theyl ever make an episode wher team rocket finally gets pikachu to the boss and he doesnt want it,bcuz its only a puny pikachu.imagine how sad that would be.

May and Ash hands down...may because the two of sus love beautifly and ash because the two of us share the same personality...
 
Harley. He used a lot of fabulous Pokemon like Ariados, Bannete, and Cacturne and was a Coordinator. Jesse would be my second fave for her use of Poison types. I just wish she could have Seviper and Arbok at the same time. They were like an episode apart.
 
My favorites Definately have to be Brock (Funny) Richie/Gary (Awesome!) and Tracey (Awesome?)

I mean, he's pretty pathetic and ridiculous bt a nice guy and has as already mentioned a bad past (which makes his person more serious).
Well, he was meaner during the first seasons...
The only bad thing is: Why did the American publisher give him such weird and stupid voices? Miki Shinichro in japanese is one of my favourite voice actors and makes Kojirou even greater.
Everything was already mentioned I guess...
I like Butcher/Kosanji (Mwahaha)too. The names Butch/Kosaburo not Butcher/Kosanji, dodn't your mother teach you to remember peoples names XD.
I don't know why but I like Deliah/Hanako too.

He's so cool! Just... Arrghh! Everything about him is so awesome! Love him love him LOVE HIM!
He's got a great knack for influencing people, and he put that annoying May girl in her place! (prepares for flames)
He's also gorgeous, IMO. ^_^
After that it's Brock. He's so kind, and so intent on seeing justice done. He always cares for others, he can cook, he's done so much... And, IMO, he's great looking. ^_^

MAY! MAY MAY MAY MAY MAY! She's my favorite character hands down. And I forgot why. Drew, too. Why? Because...1) He's awesome...and 2) It's the name of one of my friends. I guess...I just like coordinators. Just not harley. I don't like him.

Well, I have a liking to Solana and Kellyn cuz they're Pokemon Rangers, and now I'm trying to buy Pokemon Ranger in my local store. >< POKEMON RANGER FTW~!!!
And... May and Dawn, I think. Well, they give me inspiration for my OWN appeals, so... yeah. I don't like their character though...
 
Hmm...

I'd have to say that my overall favorite character is a tie between May/Haruka and Jun/Pearl (I refuse to call him Barry, so I'm going by the name given to him in PokeSpecial, even though this is a topic on the anime).

May because she has an awesome personality in the Sinnoh saga (plus she has good taste in Eeveelutions), and she's great at contests (just like Ruby <3).

Jun because I just like Pearl from PokeSpecial XD And he has a pwnsome team too. And although I don't like how he looks up to Paul/Shinji, but at least he isn't as annoying as Ash/Satoshi.

Other minor faves include James (I keep forgetting his original name ><') and Harley. And Morty.
 
I've always liked Brock, he's my favourite twerp. xP
James is someone who I never really liked, but lately he's been on my good side and I can't imagine the Anime without him.
Dawn has got to be my favourite female companion, Misty and May never really sat well with me.
Strangely enough, Pikachu. Not sure about Hoenn/Sinnoh, but back in Kanto he was actually quite funny when he wanted to be.
I also like Paul a little, he's the greatest rival the Anime has ever had. As long as they don't end up turning him into a goody-two-shoes, like Gary, he'll remain one of my favourite characters.
 
Brock is my favorite "main character." He's so funny, but also so smart. XD I love how he has to flirt with every girl he sees, and how he can go from normal to flirt-mode and back in less than ten seconds.

James would be my second fav. He's also very funny and is a good guy even though he's a member of Team Rocket. I can't imagine anyone not liking James.

My favorite "minor character" is Bill. He's just so funny. He spends his time dressing up as Pokémon and making storage systems. Plus he is supposedly super-smart, but doesn't know what a Dragonite is. That just makes me laugh. And green hair ftw!

Lance and Steven tie for second favorite minor character. Both of their Pokémon teams are awesome, and I love League Champions. ^^
