Here are a few of my ideas for original starter Pokemon. Yeah, I know they look like they were made in MS Paint and yes they were.

It's not bad really, considering you made it in paint. I think your creations might need a little more detail.

The murkrow and it's evolution look they are are rip offs from Natu and Xatu. But o well i doubt i could do any better. Good job

I would recommend using The GIMP to process graphics in future.
Namely, the feature of the gimp which allows you to set a brush's transparency and put it in "soft light" mode - perfect for shine and shadows.

Yeah i agree with score_under. Use Gimp or at Least Paint.NET. Its free and it is really good. Just google it.
