I dont think you will get much advice on PC. If you are serious about this you have to realize the time this will take! But go to google(or search engine of choice) and search for software dev. sites or forums and ask there, it will be alot more helpful.

https://www.devshed.com/ has a lot of things about script coding. It also has a forum. I would like to help, but I don't have the knowledge of PHP or MySQL plus I don't have nough time on my hands now. That's all I can give you.

The best bet is to take a look at various forum softwares out there, and work off those. Taking looks at various types of coding will defiantly help you out.

(And I doubt that you'll get much $$ for it)

well... im asking $40 for a full lifetime license and 10 for a one year license. I have lots of features planned that i know to work. Plus with a lifetime license will give a lifetime worth of updates and free addons.

    There are a quite a few free ones out there, so you defiantly will have some trouble getting popular. >>;;

well... im buying a domain and stuff. i am trying to make a vB rival. my friend had his license expire and he gave me the files. im not using them but im studying the code so i know where to start.

Hmm... if vB sees any of their code in there, then you will have some problems.

And most forums are developed by a team, it's a HUGE project for just one person.

I don't reccommend that you make people to pay for it at first. You'll get a lot more people if you have it open-sourced because everything open-sourced is better. :classic: This way you can have many developers working on making the forum better than VBulletin. Then after the forum software gets popular, you can start to have a paid version along with a open-sourced one. Of course, having a paid version replacing an open-sourced one will make you lose a lot, and I mean a lot, of users which is bad.

im not making it pay AT FIRST. and im not copying vB. Im only looking at it for inspiration.
a free license for my forums wont have as many features as the payed version. such as vbulletin and vblite but the free one wont be as bad as vb lite

You are aware that people will just go and pirate the software?

i dont care. beccause i'm setting up a call home feature like vB. and if they mess with that or the footer (copyright) they'll get the following message
It seems you have removed the callhome/copyright info. As stated in the license modifying this makes your license void. An email has disbatched to the staff of COMPANY.
    Have a nice day,

You're going to have trouble getting it all done, it's going to take you months if not years you know. Good luck, but somehow I don't think it'll get off the ground very well...

well can you help? ill add you to the credits page if you want.

There's better (and easier) ways to make money off the internet than making your own forum software.

I'd be willing to help for some stuff, but meh... *shrugs*

What's your database structure gonna be?

the structure will be mySQL if i know what ur saying

Well, there's one problem. Are you gonna make it compatible with other databases? Or provide hosting? Because not everyone has mySQL, and things like phpBB support lots of databases.

And by structure, I meant tables that you'll use.

its gonna have an optional flat_file backend

I dunno what that is. o.O

    Care to explain?
