I found it interesting that they announced each island has a guardian and there are four islands meaning there would be four guardians. Coincidentally there are four tiki gods in Hawaiian mythology. I believe each guardian is going to be something resembling a tiki statue or something revolving with a tiki. What do you guys think of this theory please discuss because I am convinced this will happen.

That is actually a very accurate theory. I didn't know that there were Tiki Gods for Hawaii and I think you are right.

Ku – Ancient Tiki God of War
Lono – Ancient Tiki God of Fertility and Peace
Kane– Ancient Tiki God of Light and Life
Kanaloa – Ancient Tiki God the Sea

These would also match Masuda's reasoning for making one pokemon Sun and one Moon. It is because he wanted to make the theme as close to life as possible. And all of these are parts of life. War, Sea, Fertility, Light and Life.

The themes of each God also can fit into a Pokemon type. From top to bottom: fighting, fairy, grass, water.

Edit: looking into the strange souvenir from X & Y it looks like a tiki statue

This is interesting. I wonder if they'll be the gym leader or the elite four? Or just something else?

I want to bump this a bit for all to see. It is almost certain that this theory is correct.

We do not know if these are legends yet, but the idea seems to be almost confirmed.

I would say this Topu is based on Kane, who is Light and Life. Which matches the typing.

The other might be Water, Fighting, and Grass or Ground. They might all have a secondary typing of Fairy.

You beat me to it. I made this on my Poké amino page and wanted to post it here about my theory on this. Id like to believe there is going to be 4 mythica or guardianl Pokémon, one for each island.

I had posted this in another thread, but I'll post it here too. Tapu Koko is the guardian of MeleMele Island, which is your starting island. "MeleMele" is the Hawaiian word for "yellow", and Tapu Koko is both the color yellow and an Electric type. There's a theory out there that the 4 main islands of Alola will be named after the original 4 versions of the Pokemon games to coincide with the 20th Anniversary: Red, Blue, Green, and Yellow. If that turns out to be true, I'm thinking that this is what we'll get for the other island guardians: Fire/Fairy, Water/Fairy, and Grass/Fairy.

I pointed that out in another thread myself. I think Tapu Koko is the War tiki god. It gives off the aura of a warrior.

I don't know. If it was based off the war one, I think it would have fighting to be honest. Electric = Light and Fairy = Life.

Also the masks of the tiki might take shape on the pokemon, like the one Topu has, which looked like a beak somewhat. These are what all the masks look like,

    Lono of Fertility and Peace.

There is also a 5th called Pele, daughter of Kane. She is goddess of Lighting, Lava, Fire and Power of the earth. She could be a mythical pokemon.

The Fire/Fairy could be the Life one. Electric could be referencing how lightning was the weapon of choice by wrathful gods like Zeus.
Though I guess a Fire/Fairy could also be the war one. I think that the war one might belong the big island, as there are some monuments in the big island made by the order of Kamehameha.

I was thinking that too, since the Big Island in real life is the one that has all the volcanic activity on it. But it's the island north of it that looks to have the active volcano on it, so it's hard to say where the hypothetical Fire/Fairy one will come from.

I'm also starting to wonder if these 4 guardians will serve as the Mesprit, Uxie, and Azelf of Alola and have a close connection to Solgaleo and Lunala. You might need all 4 guardians to activate them.

Perhaps we do, well story wise. Solgaleo and Lunala could take Pele's place.

You know this scene from the trailer: https://www.reddit.com/r/pokemon/comments/4qmu1u/tapukoko_doesnt_give_a_****_about_the_birds_in/

I was just thinking maybe this is the moment you meet Tapu Koko? Maybe you get attacked by a flock of Spearow and Tapu Koko comes to rescue you. I think Hala (or somebody) mentioned that the player character had already met Tapu Koko.

It would make sense for it to rescue you since it's the guardian of the starting island.

I pointed out in another thread how it could be a homage to the beginning of the anime. I do think that it's prior to us getting our starter, unlike in the anime where Ash already has Pikachu.

I feel like people try too hard to tie pokemon to their mythological origins. People try and predict types and which animals they'll be based on but then pokemon do something unexpected. For example, Solgaleo is based on the sun, however it's a steel type. Rayquaza is based on the creature "ziz" which is usually depicted as a giant bird but it's a dragon. The musketeers are four legged beasts with horns for swords.
In the end pokemon create their own legends and lore so they only really uses the real world legends as a foundation and then put their own twist on it.

This isn't trying too hard at all. It has basically been proven with Topu matching exactly what a Tiki God is supposed to do and the fact that it is a Tiki when flying.

Rayquaza was based on more than just Ziz. And also, We have been right on almost everything since BW came out based on wise. The Musketeersd still use swords and have Sacred Sword, which was there signature move when it first came out. Solgaleo is not based on the sun, it is an emissary of the sun. But not based on it.

And all legends are inspired by something in mythology. And this is what the four guardians are inspired by. I just don't think it is possible to prove that theory wrong. Even if they don't look like Topu, they may still have similarities of the 4 Tiki Gods.

Maybe the evil team will be collecting the deities of each island and we have to rescue them or fight them if they are turned dark..

    This theory has blown my mind away and it makes me more excited and I'm really looking forward to more news regarding S&M. November, please come soon. ;-;

I can already see people calling the plot a ripoff of DPP if they go that route. In DPP Galactic was collecting the lake trio to make the Red Chain and we had to free them (but it was too late, Cyrus had his chain).
