Pokémon Black and White FAQ

Following the release of Pokémon Black and White, we have begun to uncover a vast amount of information. With so many new features and aspects introduced in this generation, there are questions that are bound to be asked. This FAQ aims to address the simple questions as well as list the very common questions people have about the game. It will also seek to cover the many details within the games themselves.

What is Pokémon Black and White?
Pokémon Black and White are revamps to the Pokémon franchise. They are set in the Unova (or in Japanese, "Isshu") region, which is also introduced in these games. With the Unova region, 156 new Pokémon were released rising the total number of known Pokémon to 649 different Pocket Monsters.

When were the games released?
Black and White were released in Japan on September 18th, 2010. They were released in European countries on March 4th, 2011 followed by the North American release on March 6th. The Australian Release Date came in afterward on March 10th.

What are the three starting Pokémon?
Like every new region, you start off with the choice of either a Fire-type, Water-type, or Grass-type Pokémon. You will have the choice of choosing between Snivy, Tepig, and Oshawott.

Who are my rivals?
You'll have two "childhood friends", known as Cheren and Bianca, who you'll meet at the start of your journey in Nuvema Town. When Professor Juniper gives you all a choice of the starters, Cheren will pick the starter that is strongest against you and will immediately battle you. At the start of the games, Bianca will select the Pokemon weaker than yours in type and battle you as well.​

What platform are these games made for?
Black and White are for the Nintendo DS and Nintendo DS lite. They also have exclusive features for the Nintendo DSi and DSi XL, utilising the DSi's camera and presumably, its 802.11g chip (meaning WPA and WPA2 support!). There will also be an optional game mode where you can upload your Pokémon onto the internet and interact with them through a web browser.

Will the games connect to my router?
Yes. If you own a Nintendo DS lite, you will be able to use WEP to connect to the Wi-Fi Connection. If you own a Nintendo DSi or DSi XL, you will be able to connect if your router uses WEP, WPA or WPA2 (PSK and TKIP supported).

Will these games work on my DS if I import them?
Yes, provided that you have a DS or a DS lite. If you have a DSi, keep in mind that the DSi has region locking built in. Black and White will be "DSi-compatible" games, meaning they will work with the DSi's enhanced features. However, games with any DSi features are region-locked, so they will not work in a DSi whose region does not match, hence if you wish to play a Japanese copy of Black and White, you will need a Japanese DSi.

How will I transfer Pokémon between Diamond/Pearl/Platinum/HeartGold/SoulSilver?
You will need two Nintendo DS consoles, one with Black/White, and one with a 4th generation Pokémon game. Pokémon will be transferred from that game into Black and White via the PokéShifter, which is a mini-game where you toss Poké Balls around to capture the transferred Pokémon. This process is one-way. (Of course, it's also impossible to migrate 5th generation Pokémon into a 4th generation game.) The language between these games must be congruent - you cannot transfer Pokémon from an English copy of Diamond to a Japanese copy of Black. Take note, you can only receive Pokémon from the PokéShifter after you obtain the National Pokédex.

Why aren't my Pokémon earning experience after the "tutorial"?

You will be unable to play your imported game if…

I have a Nintendo DSi / 3DS! Will I be able to play my imported game?
The first thing to note is that the Nintendo DSi, Nintendo DSi XL and Nintendo 3DS are region-locked. Any DS games with DSi-only features, such as Black and White, will have a region code on them which will prevent them from working on your console.

If you import a Japanese copy of Pokémon Black, but your DSi is from America, the games will not work. The region in the game must match the region of the firmware on the console. However, the English versions of Pokémon Black and White do not have a region code set - hence, they will work in any DSi regardless of region.

What are these regions?
The regions are separated into five - Japan, North America, Europe (this includes South Africa), Oceania (Australia and New Zealand), South Korea and China. There are also DSi titles without any region encoding whatsoever. Any DSi-enhanced title will only work with a DSi or 3DS purchased in the same region, or if the title does not have a region.

Wait! I have a Nintendo DS lite!
No region code hassle applies to you whatsoever, as the Nintendo DS and Nintendo DS lite were created without regions in mind.

But wait, there's more…

I can't transfer Pokémon from my English copy of Diamond to my copy of Black.
This makes things even more convoluted, huh? Basically, the languages between games must match. A UK or US English copy of Black will only communicate with English copies of Diamond, for example.

Will I be able to connect an English copy of Black to a Japanese copy of [Wii game here]?
The language lock applies here too, sadly. The game simply will not recognize the DS game.

Can Japanese and English copies of Black and White play together?
Possibly. There has traditionally never been a language lock between the Pokémon games in the same series (or generation). So, you probably won't have any trouble battling someone with an English version of White.

Victini is available in America! Why can't I download it with my Japanese copy of Black? (I remind you that this is an example.)
See above - there's a language lock associated with Mystery Gift.

The Battle System

Like every new generation, Black and White has taken the opportunity to upgrade the previous battling system with a few changes. While the basics are still the same, there are some details worth acknowledging.

What has changed about battle animation?
Unlike previous generations, during battle you will find your Pokémon's sprite and battle grounds are no longer in a static position. Instead, everything is in motion. The front and back sprite of your Pokémon continuously move, and depending on the battle scenario, the movement of your Pokémon may alter. Other than sprite animations, the camera is always alternating its movement to fit each attack.

What are triple battles?
Continuing from the Double Battle system that was first introduced in Ruby and Sapphire, Black and White has brought to you, Triple Battles! This requires you to use half of your team (3 on 3 matches) against your opponent. With triple battles, new battling mechanics have been implemented to enhance your battling experience.

It should be noted that triple battles are primarily found in Pokémon White.

How does one target another Pokémon in triple battles?
Targeting another Pokémon in triple battles depend solely on your position on the field. The Pokémon in the middle has the ability to attack all Pokémon. Those located on the sides can only attack the Pokémon directly on their opposite or the foe's centered Pokémon.

Can I rotate my Pokémon during a triple battle? How can I use this as an advantage?
This is where things get spiced up! You have the option to rotate your sideline Pokémon with the Pokémon positioned in the middle. However, this will take up one of your turns and leave you vulnerable to attacks. You can however use your rotation to an advantage. If the Pokémon in the center were to inflict damage to all three Pokémon on your opponent's side, it will cause more damage compared to a Pokémon attacking from the side.

What are Rotation Battles?
Next to triple battles are Rotation Battles. These battles are set out just like triple battles, but the stage itself rotates. While three Pokémon are still sent out on the field, unlike a triple battle, only one Pokémon is up front to attack while the others are pushed back. However, you are enabled to turn your stage clockwise and counterclockwise to swap your frontal Pokémon.

Does swapping my Pokémon in a rotation battle affect a turn?
No, rotating your Pokémon does not use up a turn of yours compared to a triple battle. In addition, you have the ability to attack immediately after you rotate to your new main Pokémon. It appears the rotation is the first action that takes place in battle, so speed is calculated after the rotation.

What is the Wonder Launcher?
Remember during multiplayer battles, the option to use items was disabled? With the Wonder Launcher enabled, you and your opponent have the opportunity to use items during battle. There is a slight catch though. For a fair match, items must be earned throughout battle. During your own turn, you will receive a single that earns you points. You can use these points to to purchase the use of an item - this will take up one of your turns. These items range from those such as Revive, Ether, X Attack as well as other items that can activate items and abilities before their time.

New attacks, updated attacks, and combination attacks

How many new moves have been introduced?
Black and White has introduced 92 new moves in total. For more detail on each new move from their Type, Category, Power Points, Base Power, description and more, you can check this site location here.

What do you mean, "Updated Attacks?"
Updated attacks are moves that were first brought in from previous generations and have been slightly improved or changed. Whether it be their Base Power or Accuracy, you may find a complete list of updated attacks here.

I heard Black and White have Combination Attacks. What are those?
Combination attacks are performed by using two individual moves with two of your Pokémon during double battles and triple battles. In addition to the combined moves, they also have an added effect. These effects may vary from status afflictions to doing damage to the Pokémon.

What are the most current known combination attacks?

Grass Oath + Fire Oath
Effect: During a Double or Triple battle, this move combines and surrounds your foe with a field of fire that causes damage to your opponents each round.

Fire Oath + Water Oath
Effect: These moves combine and creates a rainbow across the field. The combination increases the chance of a secondary effect to occur when your Pokémon uses an attack.

Water Oath + Grass Oath
Effect:These two moves combine to create a swampy/misty shroud in the field that reduces the speed of your opponent's Pokémon.

TMs and HMs

We suggest you use Control+Find (Ctrl + F for Windows) to search for the TM you are looking for. Simply press Control + Find, type in the either "TM(number here)" or the name of the TM and it will bring you to what you are looking for with its respective location. You may also do this for HMs and items if need be.

I heard TMs are now reusable. Is that true?
Yes, TMs are no longer discarded once used. With the pro of having Reusable TMs, there is a slight catch. You can obtain TMs and use them repeatedly with no extra cost; however that being said, there are only one of each TMs throughout the whole game, which makes your search for all of them within the region more difficult and the price of purchasing TMs even higher.

Has anything changed with HMs this generation?
There is a minor change in HMs. One being there are no longer eight HMs like previous games; there is only a total of six. Secondly, there are a few older HMs from past generations that are now TMs.

New Evolution Methods

What is the new style of trading for evolutions?
There are a couple of different methods to follow in order to evolve your Pokémon for those that evolve through an item or trade. There are also specific Pokémon that you must trade with in order for your Pokémon to evolve through trade.

Which Pokémon evolve through trades with other specific Pokémon?
★ Karrablast → Escavalier (Trade With Shelmet)
★ Shelmet → Accelgor (Trade with Karrablast)

How is it possible to evolve Feebas without a way to max out its beauty?
Without there being a way to max out the beauty stat of a Feebas, a new item has been introduced called the Prism Scale as an alternative. This item must be attached to Feebas during a trade, and it shall evolve afterward.

What are the specific locations for Pokémon that need a certain area to evolve?
For Pokémon who evolve with items that are no longer available in this generation, there are now alternative ways to do so.

★ Eevee → Leafeon [Level Up with Moss Rock in Pinwheel Forest]
★ Eevee → Glaceon [Level Up with Icy Rock in the basement of Twist Mountain]
★ Magneton → Magnezone [Level Up in Chargestone Cave]
★ Nosepass → Probopass [Level Up in Chargestone Cave]

[a id]Breeding Mechanics[/a id]

New Breeding Mechanics

With just a few enhancements, the method for breeding has remained the same from previous generations to now. Breeding for natures and perfect IVs remain unchanged.

Where is the Daycare Center?
The Daycare Center is found right after Striaton City on Route 3. Being found that early in the game, you will only be able to put one Pokémon in the Daycare at a time. When you get a little further in the game and reach Nimbasa City, you will be able to place the normal amount of two. The usual old man will tell you how your Pokémon are interacting and when there may be an egg.

How do Dream World Abilities help me breed for the right natures and egg moves?
There is a certain way to get Dream World abilities to begin with. This works by getting the ability through chances by gender, and it will not work through the usual breeding. If the female Pokémon has a Dream World ability, the offspring has a high chance of gaining an ability it is able to obtain. However if you are breeding a female Pokémon with a Ditto, the ability will not pass on. A male Pokémon may have a Dream World Ability but if the female does not, it shall not work that way either. When the offspring gets a Dream World ability, you will be able to continue breeding to receive the correct nature you need, as well as egg moves for your team.

[a id]Capturing Mechanics[/a id]

New Capturing Mechanics

The method used for catching Pokémon is still being used for this generation, and there are no new Pokéballs available with a different effect for the capturing method. However, two new features (the Critical Capture and Double Battle method) have been introduced and has made affects on the capturing mechanics.

How does the Critical Capture method work?
The Critical Capture feature has a very slight chance of occurring during a battle, but when it does, there is a rare case of the method failing. The feature works when you throw a Pokéball and it pauses midair, making a metal-like sound. The Pokéball will shake only once and the Pokémon will be caught. The chances of having a Critical Capture during a battle has yet to be calculated.

How do Wild Double Battles affect the capturing method?
There are certain places to engage in wild double battles for this generation. Like in Gen IV, Black and White has brought several areas for you to encounter them in the wild. You can find the wild double battles in darker grass areas with levels a tad higher than the usual. To capture Pokémon in a double battle, you must defeat one of the two first. Once one of them is down, you can then throw a Pokéball at the remaining one, which would most likely be the one you want to capture.

What are the differences between Black City and White Forest?
Black City, found only in Black after you've completed the main storyline contains many tall buildings, as well as rare items and trainers that can only be battled exclusively to Black. Whereas White Forest is found only in White after you've completed the main storyline and contains large trees as well as rare Pokemon and rare items that cannot be found in Black.

Which Pokémon are exclusive to White Forest?
There are 32 Pokémon that can only be found in the White Forest. They are:

Are there other differences between cities and towns in these two games?
There are other area differences between the two games. In Black, Opelucid City looks technologically advanced and contains the Gym Leader Drayden, an older man, compared to Iris, the gym leader in White, who is a younger girl and lives in the same city except it looks more natural in White. Another city that changes is Mistralton City - where there are greenhouses in Black, while in White there is just ground which shows that plants have been growing there.[FONT=&quot]

[/FONT]I heard there were certain battles that are exclusive to Black and White. What are they?
In terms of battles, one game has more rotational battles and the other game has triple battles. In White, there are more triple battles than rotational battles, whereas in Black, there are more rotational battles. Each game only has 4 of a certain battle and 1 of the other.

What are all the Gift Pokémon I can receive?
As done in previous gens, throughout your journey you can receive gift Pokémon from various characters. There are 12 Pokémon you can receive as gifts in total.

Location: Dreamyard
Method: When you first enter the Dreamyard, there will be a lady who offers you one of the three monkeys. Unfortunately you are not able to choose the one for yourself, and it all depends on the starter you've chosen in the beginning. The monkey that is weaker than your starter's type will be the one you receive, so if you choose Oshawott as your starter, Pansear would be the monkey she will give to you. The monkey you receive will be at LV 10 and can be a big help for the first Gym Leader.

Location: Castelia City
Method: The next gift you can receive is Zorua. In order to obtain Zorua, you must have the Celebi event transferred over to your B/W copy. You can do so by using the Transfer Machine. After the transferring process, go to one of the buildings in Castelia City where a girl is standing by a girl whom seems lost. The Celebi (that should be placed in your team party) will then come out with the result of having the little girl's illusion form back to a Zorua. Before it joins your team, you must have an empty slot available in your party and a Pokéball to catch it with. There is not a specific Pokéball it must have in order to be caught in.

Location: Relic Castle - Nacrene City
Method: Tirtouga (Ancient Turtle) and Archen (Oldest Bird Pokémon) are the two new fossil Pokémon introduced in Black and White. You will receive one of the two fossils in Relic Castle of your choice. There is the Lid Fossil containing Tirtouga, and the Plume Fossil which contains Archen. Like in all other previous gens, you must take the fossil to the museum in Nacrene City and one of the clerks shall bring the fossil to life. The one you have chosen will be revived at LV 25.

Location: Route 18
Method: Located on Route 18, there will be a small house where your next gift Pokémon can be obtained at. When you enter the house, there will be a man in a red suit offering you a Pokémon Egg. If you choose to take the egg, it will hatch into a LV 1 Larvesta.

Location: Marvelous Bridge
Method: The gift for Magikarp is similar in style of purchasing a Magikarp on Route 3 in the Kanto region. On Marvelous Bridge, a guy will offer to sell you his Magikarp for

500 at LV 5. Nothing is special about this Magikarp however, but it's the only one that is obtainable in the Unova region.

Location: Twist Mountain
Method: All fossils (Old Amber, Helix, Dome, Root, Claw, Skull and Armor Fossil) of the Sinnoh, Hoenn and Kanto region can be obtained for this generation. In the Twist Mountain cave, a man will give you one of the fossils each day after you have received the National Pokédex. You will receive any fossil at random, so you might end up getting the same one multiple times, and the supply is unlimited. You can revive the fossils at the museum in Nacrene City.

Seasonal Changes

How does the seasonal cycle work?
Unlike the Day and Night system, the seasons are not based upon or dependent on the real world cycle for seasons. Instead, the seasons will last one month each. Therefore making the entire cycle last for four months. Giving you the chance to experience each season three times in a year.

Which seasons occur in which month?
Spring occurs during the months of January, May, and September. Summer takes place within the months of February, June, and October. During the duration of March, July, and November you will play through the season of Autumn. Lastly, Winter occurs during April, August, and December.

What are the effects of seasonal changes in the game?
An obvious aesthetic change is the slight differences the seasons will have on certain areas in the Unova region. For instance, it may rain in one area, but during Winter it will snow instead.

The seasons also play a part on the rarity of Pokémon that appear in the wild. Where some Pokémon might appear to be quite common during the Summer, they may be found rare during the Winter. This will only be found apparent in Route 6, Route 7, Route 8, Twist Mountain, Icirrus City, Moor of Icirrus, Dragonspiral Tower, and Undella Bay. The change in season will also have an effect on new accessible areas is some of the aforementioned areas.

Other noticeable changes, depending on the season, will be certain background music. Depending on where you are, the music may alter from what it might be during Winter compared to Summer.

Do the seasons affect the time of day?
Before the time of day would change at a specific time and remain constant. However, like in real life, the time of day now varies depending on the season you are in.

Does the change in season play a part on certain Pokémon?
Yes, and more specifically, Deerling and Sawsbuck. The changes are more aesthetic and nothing status-wise alters in any way. You will learn more of the alternate forms in our "Alternate Forms" piece of the FAQ below.

What is the Seasonal Institute?
Located on Route 6, the Season Institute is a research lab following the seasonal patterns in the Unova region. One researcher will ask you to show them all forms of Deerling. If shown, he will give you a Leaf Stone as a reward.

What are some seasonal events that occur during specific seasons?

Spring:
★ Cynthia may be found ready to battle in Undella Town.
★ Caitlin and Shauntal visit Cynthia in Undella Town.

Summer:
★ Cynthia may be found ready to battle in Undella Town.
★ Skyla, Elesa and Lenora all visit Cynthia in Undella Town.
★ A trainer will trade her Munchlax in return for a Cinccino in Undella Town.

Autumn:
There are no events that take place during Autumn.

Winter:
★ The Ice Cream shop in Castelia City will no longer sell Castelia Ices on Tuesdays.
★ In Icirrus City, a snowfall shall occur giving you access to certain areas and items such as Max Potions and TinyMushrooms.
★ The snowfall will hit Twist Mountain giving you the chance to obtain TM90 during then.

Alternate Forms

Basculin

How to obtain:
Basculin has two forms: the Red Stripe Form and the Blue Stripe Form. These two forms are not interchangeable, and are dependent on its appearance at capture. The Red Stripe form will appear in Black while its alternate form will be found in White. However, due to the new Wild Pokémon Encounter Method, players will have a shot at finding the other forms in the other games.

Darmanitan

How to obtain:
To get the Zen Mode requires a Darmanitan from the Dream World or one of the forms in the Desert Resort, which is just outside of the Relic Castle. There will be six of the forms and you may get one from there.

Deerling and Sawsbuck

How to obtain:
Depending on the season, Deerling's and Sawsbuck's form will change to an adaptation of the current season for the month. There is no change but its appearance, and you can find Deerling on Route 6, Route 7, and in the Dragonspiral Tower. Sawsbuck is only found in the Dragonspiral Tower. Meloetta

How to obtain:
To change the form of Meloetta, you must take it to one of the characters in the café of Castelia City. The person you meet in there will teach it a move known as "Ancient Voice" which allows Meloetta to change form during battle. However keep in mind, this only works during a battle and not outside of one.

Deoxys

How to obtain:
To change the form of Deoxys, you must first transfer it over with the PokéTransfer on Route 15. After the process, take it to Nacrene City's museum where a meteorite is displayed inside. By clicking the meteorite, your Deoxys will change forms in any given order starting from its Normal to Speed form, and back again.

Rotom

How to obtain:
After the process of transferring your Rotom throught the PokéTransfer on Route 15, head over to the Department Store located on Route 9. In the store there are several boxes that you can interact with allowing your Rotom to change forms. Instead of Rotom being half ghost, Black and White now has all of the forms as part Electric in typing.

Giratina

How to obtain:
When you have defeated the Elite Four, head onto Cycling Road where you will bump into Dark Trinity (members of N's squad). With an apology, they give you three orbs; the Lustrous, Adamant and Griseous Orb. Attack the Griseous Orb to Giratina and it shall change form.

Shaymin

How to obtain:
After defeating the Elite Four, go to the Pokémon Center in Lacunosa Town and talk to a lady there. She will then give you the Gracidea Key item that will allow your Shaymin to change forms between 5am and 8pm each day.

Legendary Pokémon

Victini

How to obtain:
Victini is the first legendary you will encounter. It can only be obtained through the Liberty Pass which is given over Wi-Fi. The Liberty Pass allows you to enter one of the boats in Castelia City where you will face several Team Plasma members until you reach Victini. After defeating the numerous amount of members in Team Plasma, Victini shall be awaiting at the end for your battle.

Zekrom & Reshiram

How to obtain:
The main mascot legendaries will be another encounter you shall face. After you have defeated the Elite Four, Zekrom or Reshiram (depending on the game you chose) will come in with N's plan at Dragonspiral Tower. When you face either one of the two, they will be set at LV 50. Keep in mind, soft resetting does not work and they cannot be obtained as shinies. If you have a full party and don't have any room to catch Reshiram or Zekrom at the time, your save progress shall go on. However, you are able to go back to the same place when you have an available slot open for it.

Cobalion

How to obtain:
After receiving HM Surf, new accessible areas will be open for you. One of these areas would be the Mistralton Cave on Route 6. If you enter the cave, a man will inform you of the three Fighting type legendaries, with Cobalion being the first and at the end of this cave. When you reach the end, you shall face Cobalion at LV 42 (as all three of them will be).

Terrakion

How to obtain:
The second of the three Fighting type legendaries is Terrakion. Near the top of Victory Road, a cave has opened up containing this legendary. In order to reach Terrakion, you must have a Pokémon that knows the HM Strength.

Virizion

How to obtain:
Right after you obtain Cobalion, an eastern area in Pinwheel Forest will now be accessible. Within the area, Virizion shall be obtainable, and the last of the three Fighting type legendaries.

Landorus

How to obtain:
After you have captured and traded for Tornadus and Thundurus, you must take the two to the Abundant Shrine which can be found in Route 14. If you interact with the shrine, Landorus shall appear and battle you at LV 70.

Kyurem

How to obtain:
A new area called the Giant Chasm will appear north of Route 13 open for you to catch the legendary, Kyurem. The area is filled with forestry until you get closer to where the legendary lies, and as the area freezes with a lake and an earthy ground, you will encounter Kyurem.

Tornadus & Thundurus

How to obtain:
When you have finally obtained all 8 badges, head to Route 10 to hear the notice on the strange weather pattern going on in Route 7. When you reach that route you shall be invited into a house. When you leave, Tornadus or Thundurus (depending on the game you chose) will confront you and roam off. These are the roaming Pokémon in Black and White and appear in the Southern routes during the morning and in the Northern routes around the evening, both at LV 40. Tornadus is exclusive to Pokémon Black while Thundurus is exclusive to Pokémon White.

[a id]Features[/a id]The Dream World and C-Gear are just two of the many new features implemented into Black and White. This section of the FAQ will cover those many new features that Black and White has introduced to us.

Pokémon Global Link

A new feature introduced in Black and White, the Pokémon Global Link allows you to upload your save onto the internet leading you to a specific website that allows you to get access to features and Pokémon in your games.

How do I connect to the Global Link site?
To gain access to the Global Link site, you need to sync up over the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. You can do this one of two ways: Use the Dream Smoke feature given off from the Pokémon Munna and Musharna or connect through the C-Gear. When connected, you can then send across one Pokémon from your PC Box to the Dream World. This site here provides a detailed tutorial on how to set up your Game Sync ID. Also, note that you won't be able to access it until March 30th.

Do battles occur through the Pokémon Global Link site?
Once signed up on the Pokémon Global Link, you will have the chance to participate in random matches within the Pokémon Centers. You will also be ranked based on your performances which will appear on the Global Link site.

Things you can download...
Through the Pokémon Global Link site, there will be times when you can download a variety of contents. This spans from backgrounds for your PC Box in Black and White to your Pokédex and C-Gear. You'll also be able to download new songs for Pokémon Musicals. For more information on downloadable contents, click here.

Dream World

The Dream World allows trainers to play mini-games on the site with your Pokémon and even interact with other Pokémon.

Is there a time limit for being connected to the Dream World?
You are only permitted one hour in the Dream World per day. This starts from your first day connected. Afterward, you will not be able to get into the Dream World for another 24 hours.

Please note that if you adjust the DS clock in any way, game sync will take up to another 24 hours to recharge - so be careful.

I have a house?
The first thing you may notice when in the Dream World is your house situated on your own island. You may find this acting similar to a secret base like in past games. Using berries, you may purchase various furniture pieces to decorate your house here.

Can I purchase furniture for my house in the Dream World while playing Black and White?
Yes, you can. After you have first accessed the Dream World, a new shop will open up in Nacrene City. Here, a girl will offer to make and sell you new pieces of your furniture for the price of berries. Check back daily for new items she may have up.

What is my Treasure Chest?
The treasure chest in your house holds items that you can take and later transfer to your game through the Entralink when you sync up again through the Pokémon Global Link.

Is it possible to grow berries in the Dream World?
In the Unova region, you cannot grow berries. The only way you may grow berries and send them back to your games is through the Dream World. It should be noted that berries are grown in a similar manner to past generations.

What can I do with the Item Area?
The Item Area allows you to place up to nine items you own on a rack. These items can then be traded by your friends who come to visit your island. For you to do this with their items, you simple select an item from your rack that you wish to replace with theirs.

What is the Dream Isle?
Located on the other side of the island, the Dream Isle is where you can sift through various items and Pokémon through different areas. At the end, you will reach the Dream Tree. Here, for the price of a berry you can send a Pokémon to your Entralink. You can skip this function at first to go back and find more Pokémon and items, but keep in mind, once you offer a berry and select a Pokémon you may not return to the Dream Isle until the next day.

How do I play mini-games in the Dream Isle?
Upon encountering Pokémon that may be hiding in certain areas such as within lakes, trees, bushes or sometimes not even hiding at all, they will offer to play a game with you. Through these games you will befriend the Pokémon. Completion of the mini-games will earn you up to 30 Dream Points, and depending on your score, it will determine whether or not your Pokémon comes with a special move.

Can I see my friend's houses?
Based upon the friends on your Pal Pad and after at least one encounter with your friends over Wi-Fi, you will have the option which allows you to check out the other islands in the main area. You and your Pokémon can then interact with your friends' area, allowing you to trade items and water their own berries.

Collecting Dream Points
While taking on various tasks throughout the Dream World, you will find yourself building up Dream Points. These points work as a leveling system - not for your Pokémon - so you gain access to newer location in the Dream Isle as well as other perks. By taking a look at your Global Link profile, you can see how many points you've earned.

Can I capture Pokémon in the Dream World?
Yes, while befriending Pokémon you will come appoint a time when you are given the opportunity to capture them. Once captured, you may then transfer it to your Black and White games the next time you sync up. The Pokémon found here tend to not be apart of the Unova Pokédex and may also have a different ability that may not normally be found with in the third and fourth generation games.

With new abilities available, are there also new moves learned by Pokémon in the Dream World?
In addition to new abilities, there are certain Pokémon that will be found knowing a move they may not normally know. For instance, what one Pokémon can only learn through breeding, they may automatically know it here. The attacks known are dependent upon your achieved scores in the mini-games of the Dream World.

What other special exclusives do Dream World Pokémon carry?
Along with alternate moves and abilities, some Pokémon may be found with exclusive hold items.

What is the Dream Ball?
Upon arrival of the Dream Isle's Entralink Forest, you will occasionally encounter various types of Pokémon. You will find the Dream Ball automatically placed in your pack. This ball will ensure a 100% capture of the Pokémon in the Dream World, but you may try your hand at using other Pokéballs if desired.

I keep getting errors when I complete a mini-game. What's the issue?
There's a chance that it could be browser-dependant. Firefox 3.6 and below doesn't work well with the Dream World and errors occur often. To fix this, switch to another browser. We haven't yet tested every browser - but the Dream World works perfectly on Chrome and Safari without any errors, so if Firefox fails, try either of those.

The C-Gear

Like the Pokétch in Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum, the C-Gear is a feat that sits on the bottom of your display screen and provides a variety of options.

Is it always searching for local Wireless, Infrared, and Wi-Fi connections?
Yes, when on, the C-Gear will constantly search for these access points to help find you friends. You do have the option to turn this feature off. However, you will need to turn the system on to access certain parts of the C-Gear and to upload your save file.

What are the infrared options?
The infrared selection has the most available options to use. These options require you to be face to face with another friend in order to work efficiently. The four given options are Battle, Trade, Friend Code Exchange, and Feeling Check.

The Feeling Check is a new option that allows both you and your nearby friend to interact through each others touch screens. It will set a score of your compatibility. Earning a score of 0 to 60 will earn you one Heart Sweet item, but if you earn a score of 60 to 80, then you will receive two.

Please note, you can only do this once a day with a person.

What are the wireless options?
A feature you may find yourself using the most, the wireless option of the C-Gear not only gives you access to multiplayer mode, but it acts as a conduit to receiving your Pokémon from the Dream World. You have two options: Entralink and Xtransceiver.

What does the Entralink and Xtransceiver do?
First off, the Entralink takes you out of your current location of the game and places you in the Entralink center of the Unova region. Through this you can begin your own Entralink adventure or join in on an adventure of another player. You may also head north to the Dream Forest to capture any Pokémon you acquired in the Dream World.

Exclusive to the DSi and DSi XL, the Xtransceiver option allows you to have a four-way video chat with friends that are located in the range of the local wireless signal.

How about the Wi-Fi options? What are those?
Working with the Pokémon Global Link, this allows you to connect to the Global Link site. It syncs up with the servers of the Global Link and uploads all your achievements, winning records and more onto your Pokémon Global Link profile.

What is the Pass By Mode?
Allowing you to keep wireless options on as you live through your daily life, your game will detect any notice of another player who passes you by. Upon registering the player, it will log certain statuses of the other player and fill you in with details such as their chosen starter, their progress through their game, and so on.

If detected while the other player is in a battle, the Pass By Mode will update you with how they are doing within the battle.

How does the Passing Survey work?
In Castelia City, within the C-Gear building, a researcher will set you up with a various amount of questions for you to answer along with many excuses for why you were given the questions. Through the C-Gear's Pass By Mode, questions will build up as you pass by other players. Successfully completing all the survey questions each time will earn you prize items.

Keep in mind, you are not given a time limit for how long you can run the surveys, but there is a limit before you can produce your results.

Can I customize my C-Gear?
From the background to the buttons and placement, you can customize your C-Gear to where it's truly your own. As mentioned before, you can also download backgrounds for your C-Gear through the Pokémon Global Link website.

The PokéTransfer

Similar to the Pal Park, the PokéTransfer is a building located on Route 15 that allows you to transfer your Pokémon from DPPt and HG/SS after you've obtained the National Pokédex.

How do I connect my DPPt or HGSS games to Black and White?
You will need two DS' - one with Black or White in its slot and the other with your Fourth Generation game. When you go to connect, a DS Download play application will appear. This will then link in with your fourth generation game allowing you access to transfer your Pokémon over to Black and White.

Are there any restrictions when transfering my Pokémon?
Like the Pal Park, you can only transfer six Pokémon at a time (there is no day time limit like in Diamond and Pearl). In addition to the Pokémon limit, there are now other restrictions you must follow.

★ No Hold Items
★ Pokémon that know HM moves that are exclusive to their respective versions cannot be transferred.
★ Eggs cannot be sent over
★ The Spiky-Eared Pichu cannot be transferred.

Can I transfer my event Shiny Raikou, Entei, Suicune, or Celebi through the PokéTransfer and still obtain Zorua and Zoroark?
NO! If you transfer any of the above mentioned Pokémon through the PokéTransfer, you will not be able to obtain Zorua or Zoroark. Instead, you will need to use the Relocator.

Do I still have to capture my transferred Pokémon like in the Pal Park?
No, unlike the Pal Park, you will obtain your transferred Pokémon through a mini-game. Requiring good aim, you task is to use a bow that shoots out Pokéballs to capture your Pokémon. You control the bow through the touch screen and the Pokémon will be shifting between bushes through the top screen.

The Relocator

How do I activate the Relocator?
In the left building at the north of Castelia is a man asking for a set of secret phrases. These phrases are used to enable the Relocator. The set of phrases are:

How do I use the Relocator?
Like with the PokéTransfer, you will need two DS' systems. The DS holding Black or White will send out a a DS Download play application on the main menu of the DS holding either Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, HeartGold, or SoulSilver.

The Relocator can then be accessed from the main menu.

What can I transfer over with this machine?
The Relocator is very limited unlike the PokéTransfer. The Pokémon you transfer over aren't just any kind of Pokémon, but specific event Pokémon, as well as one event item. These are:

What is so special about these Pokémon and item?
The shiny Johto Legendary Trio unlocks the Lostlorn Forest. Here you will meet a character speaking of a Pokémon of illusions. You will notice that this Pokémon is in the form of one of the shiny beasts depending on which of the trio Pokémon you sent over. After your first attack, you will notice the Pokémon to be a Zoroark. This is the only way you can capture a Zoroark in-game.

Transferring over Celebi will allow you to unlock a Zorua as a gift from a character located within one of the Castelia City gates.

Currently, the Lock Capsule is unavailable. It is an item available for HeartGold and SoulSilver. When transferred to Black and White, you will have the opportunity to take it to Mr. Lock who is located in the Northern Road of Castelia City. He explains how the Lock Capsule has sealed a TM within to protect it from the hands of Team Rocket. After unlocking it, he awards you TM95 Bark Out.

Pokémon Musicals

Are Pokémon Musicals a new name for Pokémon Contests?
Unfortunately, Pokémon Contests are not the same thing as Pokémon Musicals. Black and White has replaced Contests with their new side feature, Musicals.

So, what are Pokémon Musicals?
Minus the battle-like aspect of contests where you use your Pokémon's moves as appeals, Musicals are an enhancement of the dress-up and dance appeal rounds of Super Contests.

Getting dressed up
The first round of Pokémon Musicals includes dressing up your Pokémon. Like before, you obtain accessory items such as costumes and props that are placed in your "Goods Case." You will use these accessories to match your Pokémon to the premise and feel of the song.

What are the different categories of Pokémon Musicals?
There are a total of four categories, each with a different style for you to dress your Pokémon up in. The list below will show the four categories and styles.

★ Stardom → Cool
★ Forest Stroll → Cute
★ A Sweet Soirée → Elegant
★ Exciting Nimbasa → Unique
★ Attract Munna → Cool

The Performance Round
Once your Pokémon is all decked out with their costume and props, it's time to hit the stage and let the music play. By pleasing the audience, they will throw items for you to keep. The performance round comes with its own set of music, but you can also download more music for Musicals through the Global Link site.

How do I use items to my advantage during performance?
If your Pokémon is holding an item in its hands, then during performance you can use these items to attract the audience's attention. Just remember that you may only do this once per item, so save your moments for when it best benefits you.

Is there anything more I can do?
Other than choosing the right types of items to use and costume, you have little control otherwise.

Battle Subway

Similar to the Battle Tower of Johto, Hoenn, and Sinnoh, Black and White comes with its own battle tower facility called the Battle Subway. Here you will enter a large station and battle various trainers through different trains.

How do I gain access to the Battle Subway?
Going through the Gear Station in Nambasa City will give you access to the Subway. Once there, you will notice numerous trains leading to various parts of the Unova region. Battling all the trainers on the train will lead you to another station elsewhere within the region.

Which types of battles are available?
There are many methods of battle within the Battle Subway. You will find them listed below.

★ Green Line: Single Battles
★ Dark Green Line: Super Single Battles
★ Red Line: Double Battles
★ Pink Line: Super Double Battles
★ Brown Line: Train going to Anville Town
★ Orange Line: Multi Battles
★ Yellow Line: Super Multi Battes
★ Light Blue Line: Wi-Fi Battles

What are the "Super" type battles?
As you noticed, Super Single Battles, Super Double Battles, and Super Multi Battles are just more difficult types of battles compared to their standard mode.

What can I do in Multi and Super Multi Battles?
The Multi Battles offer you the chance to compete in double battles with a friend or NPC.

What are the Wi-Fi Battles?
Through Wi-Fi Battles, you can challenge the Battle Subway with another friend over Wi-Fi.

Is there a specific number of consecutive wins I must complete before reaching the Subway Masters?
Like the Battle Tower, you must complete a series of seven consecutive battles. After completing each streak, you will earn Battle Points to purchase items at the Battle Shop. A total of 21 wins you earn you a spot against the Subway Master for the first time. A total of 48 consecutive wins will lead you to another battle against the Subway Master, but this time with more of a challenge.

Who are the Subway Masters and through which battle system can I go up against them?

Emmet Emmet can be found through Super Double Battles.

When and how can I get Victini?
Unfortunately, you can no longer recieve Victini on your game.

This event has now passed, but during March 2011, every trainer could obtain Victini via Wi-Fi on both Black and White. To catch Victini, you'll need to have reached Castelia City. A boat heading to its location, Liberty Gardens, can be found at the leftmost dock. You can download it via the mystery gift function in the main menu as soon as you obtain the PokeDex on your new games.

There was a second Victini Wi-Fi giveaway during December 2011, with it having the special Fusion Bolt and Fusion Flare attacks, previously exclusive to Zekrom and Reshiram.

What other Pokemon have been released as WiFi and Dream World events?

Yes. The 2012 International Challenge was announced recently, with sign-ups starting from the 15th of March, extending through to the 21st of March 2012. The event will run from March 22nd to March 26th. The Pokemon that are banned in Random Match-up are banned in this event, otherwise every other Pokemon is free to use.

EV Training Guide

Welcome to Unova. Here you will learn some stuff about EV Training in Unova and how to go about it, my strategies and the quickest way to go about doing it. This will also tell you everything you will need and where to get those things, how to get them etc etc.

What are EV's?

EV (Effort Value) Training is a form of training where you battle specific Pokemon to get more points into those stats you want. Training on the same stat will prove to be beneficial, as you will get a lot of points in your stats when done properly. For example, let's say you battle a Lillipup, which harvests 1 Attack EV. Battling a lot of Lillipup will give you a lot of attack points, thus having a much larger attack stat than if you didn't spend a lot of time.

Also, there is some maths with EV Training. Every single pokemon can only have 510 EV Points at once, so once you reach that limit, you're not getting anymore points in your stats. Along with that, each stat may have up to 255 EV points, which means you can max out up to 2 stats for each Pokemon. To make it more confusing, for every 4 EV points in a stat, means one extra point in that stat for when it reaches level 100.

I'll make it easy for you. 252 EV points is the most amount of points one Pokemon can have in a stat without any wasted. Having 252 in two stats means you get 504 EV points all up, which leaves 6 leftover points, which can be put into another stat for that extra point. It doesn't really matter or anything, but that one point could mean the difference between getting that kill on another Pokemon or not.

All the Important Stuff

So now you understand what it is, let's get to the important stuff which is necessary to getting the best results.

*bulbagarden.net image removed* Pokérus: It's a strange virus which seems to increase the rate of training through this method. Pokérus is simple to deal with, and goes away after a while. Nurse Joy in the Pokemon Center will tell you when you get it the first time. Pokérus doubles the amount of EVs you get after a battle. To spread Pokérus, simply battle with the infected Pokemon in the first slot, and the Pokemon you want to infect in the second slot of your party.

You should probably note that Pokérus is the last thing that comes into effect. So after calculating everything from the Power Items, including the Pokemon's EV yield, then you work in the Pokérus, which is simply doubling the amount you get for that battle.

This is completely random to encounter, and you have a better chance of finding a shiny Pokemon than finding a Pokemon with this. Best bet is to ask someone to trade over a Pokemon with it for you.

Macho Brace: It's pretty much the held equavelent of the Pokérus virus, and can be used in conjuction with it. It has the same effect as the virus as well, except you don't get to use any Power Items (explained below) with it.

It can be found by talking to a man in the Eastern Gate (near Route 16) in Nimbasa City.

Power Items: These are special items which increase the amount of EVs you get from a battle by 4. There are 6 different Power Items, which all work for different stats. Please note your speed is cut in half while you hold these items. They are:

Power Weight: For every battle while holding this item, the Pokemon will receive 4 HP EVs.

Power Bracer: For every battle while holding this item, the Pokemon will receive 4 Attack EVs.

Power Belt: For every battle while holding this item, the Pokemon will receive 4 Defense EVs.

Power Lens: For every battle while holding this item, the Pokemon will receive 4 Special Attack EVs.

Power Band: For every battle while holding this item, the Pokemon will receive 4 Special Defense EVs.

Power Anklet: For every battle while holding this item, the Pokemon will receive 4 Speed EVs.

Power Items can be bought from the Battle Subway in Nimbasa City for 16 Battle Points (BP) each.


Vitamins: These are essentially, the best starting point of EV Training in general for the games. These little babies will increase the EVs of the selected stat by 10 points, but you can only use them until you have gained 100 EVs from them, so essentially, you can only use ten of them. They are:

HP Up: This vitamin will increase the select Pokemon's HP EVs by 10 points, until it has 100 EVs from them.

Protein: This vitamin will increase the select Pokemon's Attack EVs by 10 points , until it has 100 EVs from them .

Iron: This vitamin will increase the select Pokemon's Defense EVs by 10 points , until it has 100 EVs from them .

Calcium: This vitamin will increase the select Pokemon's Special Attack EVs by 10 points , until it has 100 EVs from them .

Zinc: This vitamin will increase the select Pokemon's Special Defense EVs by 10 points , until it has 100 EVs from them .

Carbos: This vitamin will increase the select Pokemon's Speed EVs by 10 points , until it has 100 EVs from them .

Vitamins can be bought from the Route 9 Department Store for $9800 Poké dollars each. It's recommended you have a lot of money for these.


Wings: These are essentially the same as vitamins, except they do not provide as many EVs, but can be used until the max amount of EVs for that stat are filled up. They are:

Health Wing: A wing that gives the select Pokemon 1 HP EV point, and can be used until the Pokemon reaches the max amount of EVs in that stat.

Muscle Wing: A wing that gives the select Pokemon 1 Attack EV point, and can be used until the Pokemon reaches the max amount of EVs in that stat.

Resist Wing: A wing that gives the select Pokemon 1 Defence EV point, and can be used until the Pokemon reaches the max amount of EVs in that stat.

Genius Wing: A wing that gives the select Pokemon 1 Special Attack EV point, and can be used until the Pokemon reaches the max amount of EVs in that stat.

Clever Wing: A wing that gives the select Pokemon 1 Special Defense EV point, and can be used until the Pokemon reaches the max amount of EVs in that stat.

Swift Wing: A wing that gives the select Pokemon 1 HP EV point, and can be used until the Pokemon reaches the max amount of EVs in that stat.

These can be found on the Driftveil Drawbridge and the Marvelous Bridge, under the many shadows that appear there.


Berries: These are for if you go over the top with your EV Training, and can be used for reducing the amount of EVs you have. These are pretty much reverse vitamins, and decrease the amount of EVs in a stat by 10 points Note that these can be used as much as you want.. These berries are:

Pomeg Berry: Decreases the amount of HP EVs you have by 10 points.

Kelpsy Berry: Decreases the amount of Attack EVs you have by 10 points.

Qualot Berry: Decreases the amount of Defense EVs you have by 10 points.

Hondew Berry: Decreases the amount of Special Attack EVs you have by 10 points.

Grepa Berry: Decreases the amount of Special Defense EVs you have by 10 points.

Tamato Berry: Decreases the amount of Speed EVs you have by 10 points.

There is an unknown location for these berries so far.

Now for the fun part...

Okay, so now that we've covered all the items and whatnot, it's time to cover the Pokemon and where to get these EVs!

HP EVs:

Pokemon: Stunfisk, Palpitoad, Audino
EV Yield: 2 Points each
Level: 30-33
Where: Icirrus City
Encounter rate (together): 60%
Notes: Stunfisk and Palpitoad are not available in the Winter.

Okay, so our HP Pokemon are Stunfisk, Palpitoad and Audino. These give 2 HP EVs each, so you're not going to battle as much as you would the others. Make sure your Pokemon is holding the Power Weight and has Pokérus on it and you can start. Stunfisk and Palpitoad are quite common in the water puddles around Icirrus City, whereas Audino can be found in multiple routes.

The maths is that you should have your 100 EVs from HP Ups already, which is easy. Then you should battle 12 Stunfisk/Palpitoad or Audino with the item and Pokérus, then two more battles without your Pokemon holding the Power Weight, which should give you the full 252 HP EVs for your Pokemon.

100 EVs + (12 EVs x 12 Battles) + (2 Battles x 4 EVs) = 252 EVs.


Attack EVs:

Pokemon: Patrat, Lillipup
EV Yield: 1 point each
Level: 2-4
Where: Route 1
Encounter Rate: 100%
Notes: Only direct grass from Nuvema to Accumula. Avoid Shaking Spots.

Attack is by far, the easiest stat to EV train in this game, as you can only really find these two Pokemon in the grass. These both give 1 EV point for each win, so it's a few more battles than HP. Again, you'll need Pokérus and the Power Bracer for training here.

If you've used your Proteins already, then this will be a cake walk. Simply equip the Power Bracer, along with Pokérus, and battle 15 of these things until you have 250 Attack EVs. Then you can simply take the item off and battle 1 more for the full 252 EVs in Attack.

100 EVs + (15 Battles x 10 EVs) + (1 Battle x 2 EVs) = 252 EVs.


Defense:

Pokemon: Sewaddle, Venipede
EV Yield: 1 point each
Level: 14-17
Where: Pinwheel Forest (Inside)
Encounter rate (together): 60%
Notes: Avoid dark/shaking patches.

Defense is pretty much the same thing as attack, but there's a little less luck in what you'll find, as you will encounter more Pokemon, like Cottonee/Petilil/Pidove, which you'll want to avoid. Good thing is that they don't appear as much as these. As always you'll need the Power Belt as well as the virus to start.

Exactly the same as attack. You'll want to battle 15 of these guys, and then take the item off and battle one more for the final two points of defense, so then you'll have your max amount of EV points in defense.

100 EVs + (15 Battles x 10 EVs) + (1 Battle x 2 EVs) = 252 EVs.


Special Attack:

Pokemon: Litwick, Elgyem
EV Yield: 1 point each.
Level: 26-29
Where: Celestial Tower
Encounter Rate: 100%
Notes: None

Probably the second easiest stat to EV train, since all you can find in the Celestial Tower are Litwick and Elgyem, and they both give the Special Attack Boost! The Power Lens is needed for this, as well as Pokérus, which is the same for everything.

This is pretty much attack all over again, except some stronger Pokemon. Pretty much battle 15 of these, take the item off, and battle one more, and you're done with special attack. Easy!

100 EVs + (15 Battles x 10 EVs) + (1 Battle x 2 EVs) = 252 EVs.


Special Defense:

Pokemon: Frillish
EV Yield: 1 point each.
Level: 5-15
Where: Route 17
Encounter Rate: 100%
Notes: Requires Surf.

EV training for Special Defense is a cinch in these games, and it's all because of the new Tentacool rip-off, which makes it just so much easier to train in this area. Make sure you have the Power Band with you for this, and stock up on Potions, since it's quite the distance away from the Pokemon Center.

Same as always. 15 battles with the Power Band on, and then one battle without it on for the last two EV points for the max amount that you'll need for Special Defense.

100 EVs + (15 Battles x 10 EVs) + (1 Battle x 2 EVs) = 252 EVs.


Speed:

Pokemon: Woobat, Blitzle, Basculin
EV Yield: 1 point each; (Basculin gives 2)
Level: 8+
Where: Wellspring Cave (Woobat), Route 3 (Blitzle), Basculin (water/sea routes)
Encounter Rate: 50% (Woobat), 20% (Blitzle)
Notes: Purrloin can also be used, along with Zebstrika. The other form of Basculin may be used as well.

In my opinion, probably the hardest stat to train in the game, due to the lack of Pokemon which give the Speed EVs given. Make sure you have everything you need, including the Power Anklet before heading out to Route 3 for training.

Same as pretty much everything else. Complete the 15 battles with the item on, then go for one more with the item off for the full 252 Speed EVs.

100 EVs + (15 Battles x 10 EVs) + (1 Battle x 2 EVs) = 252 EVs.

Other things to Remember

- If you're ever looking for good EV spreads and movesets to use for your Pokemon, then Smogon is your best bet. Otherwise, you'll probably want to take a visit to the Competitive Battle Corner section.

- You'll most likely want a way to record this. If you have some sort of EV checker from an Action Replay, then that's the easiest way. Other than that, just go with the old-fashioned pen and paper to record any EVs you train in.

- If you're struggling to get any of the required tools, such as the Power Items or Pokérus, then the Trade Corners' Quick Trade Thread is going to be your best friend. Just ask there, and you might find someone who'd be nice enough to give them to you.

- If you're struggling at all with anything, don't be afraid to ask Alternative for any help you may need. I will be willing to help out anyone who wants to learn EV training, and is stuck somewhere along this guide.

- If you're making your own EV spreads, then it's a good idea to follow a general rule of thumb for EV training some Pokemon.

- - - Fast sweepers will want 252 (Special) Attack, 252 Speed and 4 HP most of the time. These sorts of Pokemon are Darmanitan, Sandile and Emolga.

- - - Slow sweepers will generally want 252 (Special) Attack, 252 HP and 4 (Special) Defense most of the time. These Pokemon are somewhat like Emboar, Reuniclus and Beartic.

- - - Walls with roughly equal/lower HP than (Special) Defense will want 252 HP, 252 (Special) Defense, and 4 (Special) Defense. These Pokemon are like Serperior, Gigalith and Cofagrigus.

- - - Walls with higher HP than (Special) Defense will generally need 252 in both defenses and 4 in HP. These are Pokemon like Alomomola and Audino.

What you will need:

What you are encouraged to have but do not need:

- Additional Chatots with custom Chatters
- A Pokemon with Flame Body
- An Action Replay

Encouraged Team for RNG Abuse of Eggs:

1 Pokemon with Flame Body, 1 Pokemon that knows Sweet Scent, and 2 Chatots with custom Chatters.
This allows room to leave a Ditto in the Daycare and to be able to carry the parent and the hatched baby when you are done so you don't have to constantly visit the PC.

Downloading the RNG Reporter

Before you can begin your quest for breeding perfect, shiny, or perfect shiny Pokémon, you need to download the most recent version of the RNG Reporter. The RNG Reporter is a program that will search for shiny eggs, find Pokemon with 31's for every IV and will find shiny eggs with good IV spreads. You need to go here and scroll down to prerequisites. If you have a Mac, download the PPRNG, but if you have anything else download the RNG Reporter. Note: At the time of writing, the current version of the RNG Reporter is 9.81, and this guide is written for use with the RNG Reporter. I am not familiar with PPRNG, but I assume it is similar to the RNG Reporter.

Finding your Parameters

Before you can use the RNG Reporter to abuse the pseudo-random number generator in the 5th generation games, you have to find your parameters. These are unique to each DS and are needed before the RNG Reporter will let you use any of the 5th generation features. On the main area of the RNG Reporter, click on 'DS Parameters Search'. There are three areas of the box that comes up: the box on the top left, the box titled 'Seed Encryption Variables', and the results. Let's start with the Seed Encryption Variables.

On the Version drop down box click on whatever version you are using. For DS Type, click on the only working option which is DS Original/Lite, which is the type of DS you should be using. For all of the Help Button drop down lists, mark none. The information on the left side of the Seed Encryption Variables area will fill itself in. The only thing left is to fill in your DS MAC Address. To find it, turn on your game and on the continue screen scroll down to Nintendo WFC Settings and click. On the screen that appears, click on Option then System Information, where your DS MAC Address will be listed. Write it down and fill in the appropriate box.

Now let's fill in the box on the left. In your game, get your Sweet Scentor and go to the last cave of Victory Road (the one before the cave that Cheren is in). Save and turn off your DS. Turn your DS back on and go to the settings. In the RNG Reporter, put in the date that is on your DS along with the current hour and minute. Then go to the setting that changes the hour and minute and click A (this will start the minute over). Turn the DS off again and take note of the second that you press A to start the game. Fill the seconds space in the RNG Reporter with this second. When you start the game, be sure not to press or hold any buttons during the blank white screen, the white screen that says Nintendo or during the black screen that states the copyright info. You can start pressing A after that to get to the continue screen. Start the game and don't turn the C-Gear on. Use Sweet Scent and capture the first Pokemon that appears. You will have to determine the IV's of this Pokemon. If you have an AR save and use the AR to find out what its IV's are. If you don't have an AR you will have to level it up and use an IV calculator. Either way, once you determine its IV's input them into the IV section in the Reporter. If you had to use an IV calculator and couldn't determine an exact IV just use the Min/Max feature. That is everything that you have to fill in to find your parameters, so click search. Write down all of the information that comes up (Actual Seconds, VCount, Timer0, GxStat, and VFrame; you don't have to write down the seed). Take a look at actual seconds. It is probably going to be off. For example, if you hit A at 30 seconds it will probably ready 31 under actual seconds. So there is a one second delay from when you press A to when the game actually starts. Keep the difference in seconds (in the example used, one) on your mind or write it down. The other major thing of this set of information is the Timer0. For DS's the Timer0 usually fluctuates between two different numbers, one usually more common than the other. This is important because sometimes something may be not as predicted and Timer0 will be the cause if the less common one happened when abusing the RNG. For this reason you need to do the whole parameters process up to three times to find what your most common Timer0 number is. So, repeat the process and figure out which Timer0 is the most common for your DS, and when it comes up in the results after finding your parameters a couple of times click 'Use Results in Time Finder'.

Finding Your Secret ID (SID)

Your SID is the only thing left that you need to find that is required to abuse the RNG to breed shiny Pokemon. If you have an AR, simply use the reveal SID code to find what your SID is and write it down. If you don't have an AR the process is easy as well. Go here and create an account. Follow the instruction on the page to change your DNS setting, then enter your game and try to send a Pokemon that you caught to the GTS (you will get an error message). Click on 'See unclaimed Pokemon from my IP', and associate the Pokemon that you tried to send to the GTS with your account. Click on 'Manage my Pokemon', and under the box that says Original Trainer, you will find your SID. Write this down.

Breeding Shiny Pokemon

Now that you have found your parameters and you SID, you can finally start breeding shiny Pokemon. Click on the Time Finder in the main area of the RNG Reporter, and then click on the tab that says 4th\5th Gen Shiny Egg. For the Breeding Type drop down list, select BW (or BW (International) if you are using parents of different languages). Put in the current year and month that your DS is set to, and for the Min/Max Frame set the minimum to 70 and the maximum to 200. Now put the nature that you want the baby to have and the ability number for the baby (to find which ability is which number go to the main are of the RNG Reporter and click Pokedex-IV Checker in the top left. Select the Pokemon that you are breeding and it will display which ability is Ability 0 and which is Ability 1). Now put the gender ratio of the baby that you are breeding and select 'Dream World Ability Only' if you want the egg to have their dream world ability (the parent must have the ability just like normal), and select 'Ditto Parent' if one of the parents is a Ditto. If you are using an Everstone to pass down the nature select the nature of the parent holding the Everstone. Now you have everything filled in except for the ID and SID. Fill in both then click generate. The RNG Reporter will start generating seeds that are shiny and meet all of the conditions that you have set. You can wait for it to finish or you can cancel it early if you don't want to sort through a bunch of different sets. Sort through the sets looking at any IV's that you may like for the Pokemon to have and looking at the gender of the Pokemon until you find one that you want to breed. Write down the frame that it states, the nature, ability, IV's, gender, and date/time for that seed. Also write down anything under the keypress column if anything other than none is there.

Hitting Your Seed and Getting to the Shiny Egg Frame

Now that you have found a shiny egg that you want to breed, right click on the seed in the Shiny Egg finder and click Copy Seed to Clipboard. Go to the main area of the RNG Reporter. In the method drop down list select Breeding (BW) or Breeding (BW, International), depending on if the parents are of the same or different language. Fill in the Everstone nature if there is one, and where is says 'Seed (Hex)' right click and click paste to paste the seed that you found and copied in the Shiny Egg finder. Put in your ID and SID, and select Ditto Parent if one of the parents is a Ditto. Leave everything else as it is and click 'Calculate Initial PIDRNG Frame'. Now hit Generate. This will list all of the different Pokemon that you can find on the seed that you found the shiny egg on and on what frame you will find it. You need to know this so that you can figure out your starting frame, which varies because of all of the NPC's on Route 3 where the Daycare is located.

Now you can put the parents in the Daycare and run/bicycle around until the Old Man tells you that they found an egg. Don't collect the egg, but walk up and stand right in front of him so that when you press A you will talk to him. Save here without collecting the egg and turn off your DS. Now you have to hit the correct seed. Remember when you found your parameters and the Actual Seconds was different than the time that you pressed A to load the game? This is where that comes in handy. In the example I used earlier, you hit A at 30 seconds but the actual seconds was 31. So to hit the seed you have to press A one second before the time that you wrote down that you found for your shiny egg in the shiny egg finder. So if the time to hit the seed that your shiny egg is on is 6/27/11 at 20:34:50 you have to press A to load the game at 20:34:49. Remember that if your actual seconds was the same you will load the game at the seconds listed (for the example: 20:34:50), and that if the actual seconds is two seconds off you will have to hit A two seconds before (20:34:48). Now that you understand that you should be able to hit the seed correctly. Go into the DS's setting and change the DS's date to the date of the seed. Then change the time to the hour and minute of the seed. Turn off the DS and turn it back on and wait to load the game until one second before the seconds for the seed (or whatever the difference was when finding the parameters). Be sure not to press any buttons on the white screens or the first black screen unless there was something other than none for your shiny egg. If it says Y under keypress for the egg that you found, press and hold Y during the white screen and the first black screen. Once you get to the continue screen press continue and don't turn on the C-Gear. When the season comes up, spam the X button quickly so that the Menu will open up as soon as possible. Now take a breath then press B and spam A so that you can collect the egg as quickly as possible. Once you get the egg, bicycle around until it hatches and take a look at its gender, nature, and ability. If you hit your seed you should see a spread that matches the Pokemon you hatched around the first six or so results in the main area of the RNG Reporter. Take note of the frame that the matching spread is on. This is called the starting frame. Now you have to take the frame that you found in the shiny egg finder and subtract the starting frame. This will give you the number of frame advancements needed to land on the correct frame to obtain the shiny egg.

So how do you advance the frame? That is where your Chatot with the custom chatter comes in. Every time you hear Chatot's custom cry that can be heard when you view its status screen the frame is advanced by one. So if you have to advance the frame 50 times, you have to view Chatot's status screen 50 times. Turn off your DS and follow the steps to hit your seed again. Press continue on the continue screen, don't turn the C-Gear on, then spam X again to open up the menu as soon as possible. This time, however, you click on Pokemon then click on Chatot. Go up and down and listen to Chatot's cry the number of times you need to advance the frame. For this reason, I use two Chatots so that I can quickly advance the frame so it doesn't take as long. I suggest keeping a tally of how many times you view Chatot's summary screen so that you don't lose count. Once you hit the required amount of times of hear Chatot's cry to advance the frame click B twice and take a little break. Now hit B one more time and spam A to pick up the shiny egg. Bicycle around to hatch it and it should be shiny! If it isn't, find your starting frame again and this time when you hit your seed the second time chatter once and pick up the egg to find a pattern to make sure that you are hitting the right seed.

Breeding Shiny Pokemon with Desirable IV's

So now that you have figured out how to use the shiny egg finder to hatch shiny Pokemon, why not take it up a step to breed shiny Pokemon with good IV's that will be competitively useful? Fill in everything in the shiny egg finder like you did before, but this time figure out the IV's of the parents and fill those in as well. If you are using a Ditto, it will be considered the opposite gender of the other parent. To get shiny Pokemon with good IV's, you should find a Ditto that has good IV's, because the egg will inherit up to three IV's from the parent. Now on the far right, select the IV's that you want to be maxed out. Select up to three for the best results and there may be other flawless IV's on some of the seeds that you find. If you don't find any spreads that you like you can either change the month on the DS and in the reporter to see if there is anything better or change the maximum frame to a higher number. Once you find a suitable spread do the same thing you did previously to hatch shiny Pokemon to hatch your shiny, IV bred Pokemon!

Black and White vs Black 2 and White 2

Should I skip B/W and just get B2/W2?

It's up to you! However, Black 2 and White 2's story is based upon the extension of Black and White's story. Ghetsis, N, Bianca and Cheren's storylines also reference back to their Black and White storylines, too - and you will appreciate them more as characters. As well as this, the Unova Link will be able to be used between the two games, allowing you to see a little more into Unova's history. Finally, Team Plasma's storyline also makes more sense as you see Team Plasma's original roots, and why the two sides of Team Plasma oppose each other.

So really, it depends on if you want to see the first storyline, Route 10 (!), whether you want Black 2 and White 2's storyline make a little more sense, a Unova with only Unova Pokemon up until post-game and playing the two games that were rated 40/40 by Famitsu, or if you'd rather save money.

A lot of people here would recommend getting the games, but B2/W2 can still make sense without B/W. If you do choose to get the games though, your experience with Unova will definitely be enhanced and you will likely appreciate B2/W2 more than if you didn't get B/W.
