Strange things can happen in any game, but the retro Pokémon titles lend themselves to strange and/or amusing occurances. Share your bizarre stories from your adventures, Trainers!

I'll start! While it's not a glitch or anything like that, I thought this was funny: During a playthrough of Red I did a while back, the Lapras you receive as a gift from that dude in the Silph Co. building was my last team member. Level 15? For that point in the game?! Geez, Game Freak... So, I went to grind... Since Trainers can't be fought again in RBY, I opted to use wild Pokémon. I lost my patience at level 17 and went to Victory Road.

First encounter, a level 42 Onix.

"Ah, what the hell... Surf, Lapras."

    One hit KO.

My level 17 Lapras took out a level 42 Onix in one hit! I know, quadruple weakness, bad on the Special side, but are you serious?!

Interesting. I managed to do some calculations and found this: (I have too much time to spare)

This for a matchup between full DV Lapras against a full DV Onix. I have considered 0 Stat Exp. for Lapras (whereas your Lapras would have had some Stat Exp.)

A level 17 Lapras with max DVs in Special will always OHKO a level 42 wild Onix. And for a Lapras with the worst possible DVs (ie 0)? It still has a decent chance to get an OHKO.

This makes me wonder which matchup will have the lowest level Pokemon OHKOing a highest level Pokemon.

I once landed in Pokémon's version of purgatory.

I believe it was a playthrough of Gold and I had reached Morty's Gym in Ecruteak City. The battle was not going well (seeing as I was probably around age 9 and didn't prepare properly).

Towards the end of it, all I had left was an under-leveled Togepi up against Morty's Gengar. The horror of losing a Gym challenge was soon replaced by something worse - given our limited moves, neither of our Pokémon could touch the other. My Togepi's PP eventually ran out and so did Gengar's. The failsafe of Struggle applied, only it was no use either. I suppose Struggle counted as a Normal move or a physical one, because it didn't leave a scratch on either side.

It became a futile loop dance of Struggle and I was forced to reset my saved game.
Never leave the house without preparing for battle properly, kids.
