Yeah, although when I did it to my Totodile (I think) I did it at the beginning of the game. So I guess it wasn't a total loss.

One other thing that I just remembered was: Back when I first got Gold, after I went to talk to that professer (The 2nd one you meet in the game by the Cut Tree) I didn't know what to do after that so I thought my pokemon would eventually learn the move to take down the tree. It never happened, haha.
