[Graphics] Gen II overworld sprite editing

Hi all! I am new to this section and I have basically 0 experience. I wanted to change the main character overworld sprite of Pokémon Crystal. I downloaded pokecrystal and I kinda got into it. I am not an expert but I kinda manage to understand and follow directions. So, I mainly followed this tutorial here.
The point is that I managed to get the sprite I wanted in the game (well, i gotta work on the drawing part, but it works), but there is something I can't really understand: the main character doesn't get the colors I want! I can't really understand how to change the palette. According to the tutorial, I should go to data/sprites/sprites.asm and change the palette but it doesn't work. I kinda explored the various folders but I didn't manage to find a place to change the palettes for my sprite.
Other than that, it would be even better if there was a way to create a new palette and assign it to my character. That would be really helpful!
