Gen III Skin/Gender Selection || Rom Hacking

I'm making a Hack Rom which would have various different overworld sprites for the playable character, depending on the map. Kind of like a "Skin selector" if you will.

My first idea on how to do this would be to assign a different gender to each sprite the player can use. Problem is, I don't know if it is possible to assign a new gender on the fly or if it is even possible to put in a new gender.

There are barely going to be any other trainers so space is not a problem, if you're wondering.

Am I overcomplicating this? Is there another simpler way of doing it? Is it impossible to change a player's sprite on the fly? Would you need to reload the game for it to take effect? Would you need to enter another room for it to take effect? (I actually don't mind having it work like that, it's actually how I originally intended it to work).

I don't mind only having 6 backsprites (in fact, I don't need any backsprites; I'm only really using Pokemon Fire Red as the game engine) but is it possible to swap the overworld sprite to more than 6 variable sprites?

Not in the method I mentioned, it's six 'genders' so that's six overworlds (and backsprites). Pretty sure the gender methodology itself limits this, as that's what FR has internally, and adding more is not something I've seen done yet.
Also by backsprites, I mean the sprite of the trainer throwing out a pokemon during a battle, which you should need since you're planning to do at least some trainer battles.

If you're okay with using a large base, then I believe JPAN's Hacked engine lets you dynamically change the player sprite to any overworld sprite in the game, which would work for you. CFRU might also have this, but I'm not sure
