I'm new to competitive battling to start off. So there are movesets out there for every pokemon for different strategies and such but most of them aren't learned naturally, are TM's, and egg moves and things like that. My question is how do people get all the moves that they want on a pokemon? Earthquake is a fairly popular move yet (at least in HGSS) you can only find one, you can't buy it or anything, so where do all these moves come from? There is also move tutors I guess but I don't know a whole lot about them as I never used them. So could someone please explain the basics of how people teach their pokemon all these moves and get all the TM's that you just can't buy?

    Breeding.
Male Pokemon pass on TMs and Egg Moves to their children.

I believe you can "buy" the Earthquake TM from the Battle Frontier, but it costs quite a lot of BP...

Otherwise, what ^ said is more or less right. Breeding is a huge part of making a competitively built team. Put a compatible male and female pokemon in the daycare together. The baby will be the same species as its mother, and if the father knows any compatible TMs moves or any egg moves, the baby will be born knowing it. Also, if both parents are carrying a move the baby will learn while levelling up, it will be born knowing that attack as well.

Moving to...S&M? :| It's more in the competitive genre, so I guess.

Breeding for egg moves, move tutor and TMs pretty much. You can always use an AR or trade for TMs if you don't have enough of them. Egg moves and move tutor guides can be googled.

Anyway, use the Simple Q&A sticky for this stuff in the future.
