    What are some patterns that every gen shares? For example, every gen has...

    * A Pikachu counterpart. Johto has Pichu, Hoenn Plusle & Minum, Sinnoh Pachirusu, and Unova has Emolga.

    * At least once 'cute' legendary. Kanto has Mew, Johto Celebi, Hoenn Jirachi, Sinnoh has Shaymin and Manaphy (I guess some people argue that Manaphy's not a legend, I'm not even sure) and Unova has Victini.

    * A legendary trio.

    *Two bug Pokemon that are counterparts (or psuedo-counterparts) of each other, like Butterfree and Beedrill, Beautifly and Dustox, Pincer and Heracross, etc.

    What other patterns have you noticed?

    Every gen also has at least one line of super-high-level-evolving dragon types, don't forget that. And a line of ghosts, iirc.

    Not exactly, IMO. In Gen II, Misderavus was the only Ghost Pokemon who was introduced (in G/S/C); it didn't have an evolved form back then.
