Hey everyone! When I was young I use to collect pokemon cards just for the hell of it, and I wouldn't be able to battle anyone but only my twin brother since no one really battled at that time. I have like 3 boxes of Pokemon cards, and I have some really great rare ones too.

I started playing Pokemon TCG Online and I'm getting sucked into it and I'm finding it so much fun looking and seeing all the new cards in the online game! But 90% of the people I play against have really good cards, since they buy the booster packs and use the code to activate them. This makes me want to play Pokemon TCG in person too!

I was just wondering where should I start? Where should I buy my cards? and what kind of packs should I get?

I recently bought this on ebay for 26 bucks sealed and it's coming in the mail and I can't wait!

Go get as deck and some boosters, it will be good to start. You could use the cards, from the packs. To your deck better make sense?

    tins dont come with decks.

I didn't ask if they did XD I was wondering if I should get one or the other.

Also I haven't checked current pokemon Rules but are people allowed to use cards from the first sets with sets that recently came out?

Well, the tins come with a code for the card viewable in the window of the tin for the TCGO, while the decks come with codes for the TCGO. Depends on if you want ready made decks to play with or if you want to build your own decks. That Elite Trainer Box you bought should come with between 5 and 7 copies of each type of Basic Energy that existed at the time of its release.

Tins and decks are primarily for those looking to play, with the cards in the window of the tins geared toward getting players to play competitively by making some of the best cards at the time of the tins' releases readily accessible for relatively cheap compared to what the cards' prices were before they got a promo print in a tin.

For casual play, you can use any cards you want as long as both players agree to their use. For play at an official league, it depends on the league, but most will require you to adhere to the Modified format, which can be found here: https://www.pokecommunity.com/threads/309435 (well the stuff currently legal for the 2013-14 season). Official tournaments also require you to adhere to the Modified format.

Thanks you two! Yeah I plan to play competitively and thanks for that link it helps a lot :) Which means it sucks since I can't use my old pokemon cards back in the day.

I was planning to buy a Meganium HGSS theme deck but that's out of the question!

Even though the cards referenced are out of date, this is a wonderful post by Rocket_Executive about the basics of deckbuilding and should give you an idea of what's changed since the early days of playing.

Also, research the metagame, if you know what that term means.

    Thank you!

    Also I was wondering:

"Also, anything reprinted in these sets from an older set is play-legal. That means the following:
For Pokemon, it means it has to be the exact HP, Weakness, Resistance, Retreat Cost, Type, and have the same attacks (the attack text could be altered some by TPCi on a reprint to make it fit better with the way the rules on wordings work in the meta game) as a card in a currently legal set

Is there a website somewhere that can show me which old pokemon cards are still similar to the newer pokemon cards' of the current sets they have?

EDIT: Found it. Pretty much just trainers and items only xD

And note that some Trainer cards have it so their old versions are not allowed! Like Computer Search, for instance! Ultra Ball is another. And there are others, but they escape me at the moment.

Yup yup! I've been looking at the current booster packs / decks and so far I really like the cards in Legendary Treasures and also the cards in Dragon Vault so I might buy a few packs of those or get a theme deck of something else
