Gifts, Giveaways, Trades, and the names that came with them!

Sorry if the title confused you.

Anyway...

So there's a question that suddenly popped in my head, and I couldn't really understand how it worked. Basically, what I'm wondering about are the the Pokémon you receive in the games, and nicknaming.

You cannot give a nickname to a Pokémon you received via trade. I can understand the reasoning that the nickname of the 'mon you received via trade shows the love of their original trainer (yeah, right...). But why can't we give it a nickname if it doesn't have one yet?

And then there's the Pokémon we receive for free from NPCs in the game. We can nickname them! But why? They're the original trainers, so we shouldn't be able to nickname the 'mon they give us, right? Or is there some sort of trading rule that if two trainers specifically give each other one of their 'mons (an exchange, or trade), then by magic, we can't nickname the 'mons we received. But if only one trainer performs the exchange (a gift or a giveaway), it's not considered a trade because they gave up the ownership of that PKMN?

Isn't trading the same thing? We're giving up the ownership of that 'mon we trade to other trainers?

And then there's the mystery gift 'mons we receive on events. We don't trade, but we receive, so it's a gift, but why can't we nickname them?

So uh yeah... I'm confused. ~_~
