Well, we get some Paul character "development" to start...I guess. I'm not sure if I would call it that, though, since it's just making him look like a jerk again...
They actually step in to help Chimchar, finally. Honestly, it should have been rescued a while before that (I remember something back in original Kanto about how a trainer could be stripped of their liscense or whatever if they were found to be mistreating their Pokemon. Chalk another one up to failed continuity...). At least we get Chimchar's backstory. Foreshadowing, anyone?
Of course, they speed right through Brock's & Dawn's battles...but Ash & Paul's...oh boy.

The battle itself was pretty good. It's becoming more and more obvious that the other trainers have better battling skills now. On top of all that, Chimchar's finally switched sides. YAY.
They actually step in to help Chimchar, finally. Right now, I'm just amazed with the fourth movie's score in the flashback scene, I think.
If nothing else, gives a good look on Paul's "techniques."

I'm wondering why Turtig couldn't heal, can't it learn leech seed or synthesis? Not to be to analytical especially since I don't let it learn those moves but it could have healed during the battle with mategross and zangoose

That, too (yes, it does have Synthesis). I guess Ash didn't want to risk it.

Ash is usually reckless in the battles but not usually by that much when his pokemon is collapsing without another hit

Indeed, while they alluded to Chimchar's personality before, it wasn't so overt as opposed to here. Compare its disposition to Ash in the training scene to normally -- big difference.
Yeah, the pacing got a tad funky, there. One could argue about if the episode had more time, then we'd be fun. Honestly, I think the flashback scene dragged on slightly, thus robbing Brock and Dawn of their tour time.

Very awesome episode! That Training session Paul put Chimchar through was WAY beyond harsh, thank goodness Pikachu stepped in to defeclt those attacks to save Chimchar, did Volt Tackle act as a shield? Wow I've seen it all. The writers know how to please us my having the oppenent in the last round a Zangoose lol, poor Chimchar. Chimchar finally gets an edge from its ability "Blaze" but paul...looks away?! Then Ash commanded Chimchar!! Woo, my eyes were peered to the tv, that Flamethrower rocked. Paul just dumps Chimchar like that, jerk, but I'm glad Ash got chimchar, now he finally has his Fire type ^^. lol @ Pauls's face when Ash asked Chimchar to join his team.

Paul is way to strict on Chimchar,though he said Chimchar wanted it to gain more strength,chimchar even agreed.
First was hyperbeam,then focus blast,skyattack,thunder,how could he expect Chimchar to deflect all those attacks with only flamewheel?!
Ash is the rightful owner,but no offense to everybody,but it doesn't feel right to me,Chimchar really liked Paul and in the flashback he wasn't harsh on it.Anyway Ash commanded Chimchar,how could Paul just look away as poor Chimchar would be destroyed.(good timing for Ash!)

What is Shinji's deal anyway!? Doesn't he know how powerful moves like Hammer Arm, Leaf Storm, Sky Attack, and Thunder are to a simple move like Chimchar's Flamethrower.
And I still don't understand why Pikachu Thundershock didn't work against Rhydon's horn, while it worked well back in the Cinnibar Gym Battle.
BTW, Conway looks a bit like Max. But what is he hiding?

Pikachu's Thunderbolt did'nt work on Rhydon because its ability: "Lightning Rod". The reason it worked on Blaine's Rhydon is because back in Season 1 there was probarly no abilities like those, which is why it was never introduced til the Hoenn Saga. Or this Rhydon was just Sinnoh trained lol.

Back in Season 1, things like Pikachu's Thunderbolt hitting anything was used more loosely. I think the reason why Pikachu's Thunderbolt hurted Rhydon in Cinnabar Island because he was able to shot the attack into Rhydon's month and it hurted there.
Well now we see more into the history of Paul and Chimchar. It has to be really scary to be gang up on all of Paul's pokemon with Paul just standing there. I have to feel really sad for Chimchar.
Kinda not coolies how we didn't see Dawn's and Brock's battle. It was coolies to see Brock heal Chimchar and tell Paul that he didn't have to be told to know what happen to Chimchar.

I don't know, Reyna, I think it's refreshing to have a jerk, dig through all that, and find that... he's still a jerk. Heh. Also, it's nice to know that if your Pokemon is in Paul's way, he mow you down without a second thought. I hope Ash will recall this apparent lack of mercy if he ever battles with Paul again. We can hope, anyway.
Again, all refreshing, but really hard to empathize, yep. Heh. Oh, if only Gary could have been like this.

Teeheehee Well then they did a good job in protraying Paul as a jerk. Teeheehee Still it is nice to see a different character.
Also I am certain we see them battle sooner or later again.
Well Gray had his own spices as Ash's rival since he was the better of the two in skill and he knew it too. Teeheehee He just loved to rub it in. Also Gary is cuter. Teeheehee

Well, Gary was arrogant, but he had a cute sense of arrogance. He rubbed you the wrong way, but not enough to, say, wanting to punch him for it. As a counter, Paul has the edge, or maybe, too much of it. One could argue he's Gary in the worst form, but, at least, they're not neglecting Paul like they did with Gary.
Again, I really hope he stays a jerk. No Vegeta-like reform, please.
OMG...I actually had tears in my eyes. I didn't cry, I'm not *that* emotional, but tears were *starting* to come up in my eyes. When Ash commanded Chimchar I felt really sad and sorry for Chimchar because Paul just completly ignored him, but Ash cared!...and then noticed how close my face was to the screen o.O Cool, cool, coool, cool episode!
- I like how even Team Rocket think Paul's mean :( As they have shown many times before, they're not bad, really
- I like it when Pikachu defended Chimchar with Volt Tackle
- Not much to say, BGM wise. PUSA's is less annoying than 4Kids

I used to completly hate Gary...but only because I really liked Ash. It was the same reason why I hated Misty because she used to be mean to him XD But looking back, Gary was hilarious. I want him to get his cheerleaders back. It would've been hilarious in that DP episode if he had them. He and the twerps would all be hiding away behind the bush and then Gary's cheerleaders run over, jumping, yelling "Gary, Gary, he's our man!" XD Dawn's reaction to the cheerleaders would be hilarious XD And so would J's XD It sounds better in my head...
Hmmm I didn't really feel hate towards Paul. It would've been better if they didn't say Chimchar wanted to train that way. I'm confused at to why they said he wanted to. And why Chimchar wanted to...
