4th Gen HeartGold and SoulSilver "Generation" Labeling

Browsing around over a massive (overexaggerated) span of time, including just a few moments ago, I came across an issue. Whether it could be just a problem to me because I'm human and I have trouble categorizing something, or many other people as well, I'm not sure; that's a part of this thread's purpose, as well as to get some opinions. Hopefully not some hasty and rash (same meaning... for emphasis!) words thrown in by someone with a view formed early on for how they view it (whether they know it or not. It happens...).

So, to the juice of the fruit (some fruit actually tastes good, people!), what exactly should we view as the "generation" of the new HeartGold and SoulSilver games?! Unlike FireRed and LeafGreen where the plotline could easily be tied to Generation I (with some added content and whatnot), the HG/SS contains not only the remake elements of Generation II (Johto), but even materials and events pertaining to the latest Generation IV (Sinnoh). With the more in depth combination than ever before in the Pokemon games, this becomes more than just your average Generation "X". Really, it could be time for a new "Generation" label altogether. Not that everything is or will be set in stone; there are people with preferences. In fact... that's where you come in.

I want to see you contribute your opinions and views to this [possibly overdramatic] matter [that happens to bug the crap out of me. Dang human elements of mine]. If possible, try to keep with some more meaningful posts (i.e. not just posting something super short with a simple comment attached). You don't come across people who like to view an opinion that doesn't pertain to them all the time you know; sorry if it sounds harsh or even over exaggerated (at least I mention the possibility). Also, if you just heard about HeartGold or SoulSilver and don't know much about it, read up on your facts at least a little first (assuming you JUST heard about it).

So, short and simple (didn't I just say something against that?): what generation label would you give to the HG/SS games and (without a lone/simple comment) why?
(If you find there is another way other than labeling "Generation 'X'", try sharing, but avoid shortness. An idea with inadequate thought put into it doesn't hold positive views unless others share those views. (Look at me sounding all controlling... I need some sleep.)
    )

Because all that mumbo jumbo up there shared my views in some strange semi-rant, I won't really give much reason (though there is reasoning).
I wouldn't call it just Generation II or Generation V; I would try to combine the two in someway. Maybe like that "Version" thing people use (i.e. Generation 2.1 (it starts as 2.0)), or something like that. Maybe even adding a prefix to Generation?

Yeah, seems like a lot of fuss over something so simple. It just bothers me, and ties in a bit with other conversations (depending). Chances are it bothers more than me, thus, this thread was spawned. I took it a bit huge, but better more than the norm than less than you can work with.

Sinnoh takes place at the same time as Johto.
Hoenn takes place at the same time as Kanto.

    Just call it generation 2.

Generations II and IV take place three years after Generation I, and no one's too sure where Generation III comes in, but I'll always regard HeartGold and SoulSilver as second generation games because that's what Gold and Silver were.

After all, you had Generation I Pokémon in Generation II, but that didn't mean it was called Generation I.

Sinnoh takes place at the same time as Johto.
Hoenn takes place at the same time as Kanto.

    Just call it generation 2.

Or we can read this post and realise how much more simple I could have made mine.

If you really want to call it a new 'generation' you could try gen. 4.5 or something like that. A remake isn't really deserving of a new generation title.

In my opinion, HGSS will be a part of generation 4 as FR/LG were part of generation 3(Even though they had gen I's pokemon and were Red, Green's remakes). As HGSS are being made in the current gen IV(D/P/Pt) they should definitely be in gen IV.

    Simple Explanation:
FR/LG--> remakes of gen I games----->Included in Gen III
    Therefore:
HG/SS-->remakes of gen II games------>Included in Gen IV

Not anything difficult to understand actually, is it?

    Uhm wat?

Generation 4 since it's made in the same generation as dppt
GS is gen 2 and rgby is gen1 to me the remakes are the generation they are made in
    Frlg = gen 3 ouo

It belongs in four because it has all the Pokemon up to this generation. It's not a second generation game if it has third and fourth generation Pokemon, hurr.

    Oh, uh...
I never really thought of it, it's always been generation two. I think it'll still be considederd generation two.

Its a generation 4 generation 2 remake. So hard to understand?

FireRed and LeafGreen are considered to be Generation III games, so HeartGold and SoulSilver will be Generation IV games.

I think the Generations are more to do with which device they're released for, and which game engine they're running.

    Game Boy: Generation I
    Game Boy Color: Generation II
    Game Boy Advance: Generation III
    Nintendo DS: Generation IV

    Generation goes by graphics...

Red, Blue and Yellow - Generation 1
Gold, Silver and Crystal - Generation 2
Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, Fire Red and Leaf Green - Generation 3
Pearl, Diamond, Platinum, Heart Gold and Soul Silver - Generation 4

No need to shove it so sharply. Looks more like this is an opinion gathering. :\

To be honest I'd just group it by the Pokémon and the console generation. FireRed and LeafGreen by this logic could be considered to be 3rd generation games since they can connect with Ruby/Sapphire (Advance Generation games). You can get a Wynaut in the game and trade other 3rd generation Pokémon as well. This logic can be reapplied with HeartGold and SoulSilver, I'd say.

Also to the one who said "Hoenn takes place at the same time as Kanto." needs to get some proof. The story in Diamond, Pearl and Platinum clearly reference the events occurring in Johto, but there's nothing concrete about Hoenn and Kanto.

I am perfectly agree with your point of view, even if according to me Pokémon Heart Gold and Soul Silver will be never to the level of the original ones.

If you really want to call it a new 'generation' you could try gen. 4.5 or something like that. A remake isn't really deserving of a new generation title.

    i completely agree
i see FR/LG as gen 3 because they didnt introduce anything new at all (or barely anything ;))
whereas HG/SS are introducing loads of new things, like the pokemon following you, so i personally feel its a generation 4.5
either that or generation 4 if you dont like the .5 ;)

As others have said, I also see HGSS as generation 4 games. Same as FRLG were generation 3 games because they were released on the same console as RSE.

I guess I also see it as a console thing.

I'd say Gen IV because in my eyes a new console is new generation, for instance:
    Game Boy - RBY - Gen I
Game Boy Colour - GSC - Gen II
Game Boy Advance - RSE & FRLG - Gen III
Nintendo DS - DPPt & HGS - Gen IV
Next Handheld - Next Set Of Games - Gen V
