4th Gen HeartGold and SoulSilver "Generation" Labeling

For me I say this is Generation 4-Why? because HGSS are remakes but there are new things to explore, the sinnoh pokemon are updated for it,notched ear pichu or Arceus were in the original plot, so I say Heart Gold and Soul Silver are the same games, just with some plot twists = Gen. 4 Remake of 2
This is just my opinion though...

Pokemon Generations are defined by large releases of new species and new systems, yes? That's how it's worked so far. Quick Recap:
GB- Red, Blue, (Green,) Yellow- 151 Pokemon: Gen1
GBC-Gold, Silver, Crystal- 251 Pokemon: Gen2
GBA- Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed, LeafGreen- 386 Pokemon: Gen3
NDS- Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, HeartGold, SoulSilver- 493 Pokemon: Gen4

In short: Gen4, kthx. ;)

I agree with everyone who answered along the lines of: the generation number is the console generation.
Basically:
Handheld Generations
Generation I - Red, Blue, Green (JP), Yellow
Generation II - Gold, Silver, Crystal
Generation III - Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed, LeafGreen
Generation IV - Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, HeartGold, SoulSilver

I suppose, a new generation only comes along when a new engine and graphics are made for the game which usually also involves movement to another console. (Though, Pokémon Yellow was a Game Boy Color game, but still fits in the first generation.)

Yellow wasn't a GBC game. It was still a GB game, only Crystal was a proper GBC game.

I'd still say Gen 4. Depends on the Amount of Pokemon in the National Dex to me.

Gen 1 = 151
Gen 2 = 251
Gen 3 = 386
Gen 4 = 493

Hmm, I understand your POV, its the Generation 2 storyline but using Generation 4 mechanics. I quite like the idea of it being Gen 2.1 XD.

Sinnoh takes place at the same time as Johto.
Hoenn takes place at the same time as Kanto.

Just call it generation 2.

Using the above theory then Sinnoh is Generation 2 as well :P

Generation is used to describe when the game is released and the features it displays (and - so far - which platform), no when they take place, that's irrelevant.

GENERATION (pokemon) :A new era or phase that brings a revolutional change to previous pokemon installments and features a new set of pokemon of its own that are added to the national dex. It often starts off the next set of pokemon games on a new console.

therefore, by my thesis (which happens to be popular thought), HGSS are GenIV.

2 + 4 = 6? :D

Seriously, though, I'd consider them 4. I do like the sound of 2.1, though.

The more I am thinking about it the more this seems 4.5. I mean the pokethlon the new menu interface and the fact that notchie is an hgss exclusive not even tradable makes me think so.
