Help me build a team around Cyndaquil-Typhlosion, or should I ditch Cyndaquil for a different fire pokemon?

I would prefer a lot of types in my team!

Typhlosion's actually not too bad. It's movepool is a bit small, but it can work.

    Try this:
    -Flamethrower
    -Sunny Day
    -Solarbeam
    -Focus Blast

Flamethrower is your STAB fire attack, Sunny Day boosts its power. Solarbeam hits water/ground/rock types and with Sunny Day, you don't need to wait a turn to charge it. Focus Blast is another decent attack that can hit other types and provide type coverage.

As far as recommended types/pokemon, I recommend an electric type and Lapras with Ice Beam or a Gyarados with Ice Fang. You need an Ice move for the final Gym and the Champion. For electric type, you have either Ampharos or Raikou as the best in the game. If you don't want to waste your time catching Raikou, then Ampharos is your best bet.

I also recommend a Dragonite with the following moves: Dragon Dance, Earthquake, Dragon Claw, Roost. I set up with a Dragon Dance or three, heal any damage taken while setting up with Roost, then proceed to sweep with DClaw or EQ. This set has never failed me yet. I've swept the entire E4 save Lance with this one set alone.

Just keep in mind type coverage. You don't want to have 3-4 moves of the same type on one pokemon. For example, 4 fire moves on Typhlosion. You'll be stuck if you run into a type that resists Fire.

Honestly, though, your team is really up to you. Any team can make it through the main game as long as its level is high enough. I recommend having your levels around 45-50 before you face the E4.

Dewgong is another good option for a water type if you want to go with it.
It learns both Aurora Beam and Ice Beam that will deal big damage to dragon types.
Its a bit lesser used than the likes of Gyarados or Lapras, but it is a good pokemon.
You want Hydration as an ability. It adds a little special something to Dewgong.
Plus it has pretty good sp atk. as well. :)

don't ditch typhlosion! It's so cool and has an awesome fire type move (eruption) that doesn't need recharging. here's an idea for a team

    typhlosion
    moves:
    eruption
    flamethrower
    shadow claw
    brick break

    gyrados
    moves:
    surf
    waterfall
    ice fang
    dragon pulse (or dragon breath)

    gloom
    moves:
    giga drain
    petal dance
    sleep powder
(any other move evolve at level 53 after learning petal dance)

    pidgeot
    moves:
    fly
    wing attack
return (it may be a TM)
    quick attack

    growlithe
    moves:
    flamethrower
    heat wavecrunch
    agility
(evolve with fire stone at level 46)

    dugtrio
    moves:
    earthquake
    slash
    mud bomb
    (any other move)

typhlosion is the bestest fire type for me since it can learn eruption which hits two opponents and not your teamate! plus no recharging. it learns the move at level 57. this team will be a nice, balanced, team with great moves.

I wouldnt recommend having 2 fire types on your team. You barely need 1 to play the main game in hg/ss.
Pidgeot im against, there are better pokemon that can learn fly if thats all you need pidgeot for. Dragonite i believe can learn fly. Way better stats and movepool.
As for gyarados, waterfall suits its stats better than surf, although to be honest i prefer surf ;-). You dont need both. Keep dragon dance to up your attack. Then add in earthquake/rock slide/stone edge in over drgon pulse and you have a winner.
