Beat the first gym and travelled down to some cave near a Pokemon Centre, explored it but... now where do I go?

well, exit south of violet city and you'll continue on your journey to bugsy :)

Check the map on your Pokegear (or onlin ones =P) - you'd want to head to Azelea Town next, which involves going through Union Cave.
